The graduate certificate program in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GNSS) provides specialized professional training in critical methods informed by feminist, queer, trans, and intersectional approaches to difference. The program fosters a community of scholars dedicated to advancing current conversations in GNSS and developing theoretical frameworks drawing from traditional disciplines as well as from such interdisciplinary fields such as critical legal studies, critical race theory, digital humanities, disability studies, ethnic studies, media theory, new materialisms, performance studies, poetics, poststructuralism, psychoanalytic theory, public health, religious studies, science and technology studies, theories of embodiment, and transnational and postcolonial studies. In monthly meetings, students gather to share readings, discuss research and pedagogy, and workshop manuscripts.

In recent years, the GNSS graduate certificate cohort has ranged from 12 to 18 doctoral candidates working in more than a dozen disciplines, including American studies, anthropology, comparative literature, English, French studies, German studies, history, Italian studies, modern culture and media, music, philosophy, public health, religious studies, and sociology.

Admission to the graduate certificate program is rolling and primarily requires that students articulate a clear research agenda related to the study of gender and sexuality and a course plan.

The requirements for the Certificate Program include coursework, teaching or TAing a course relevant to gender and sexuality studies, regular participation in a reading and research group, and the presentation of a substantial piece of research.

What Can You Do With a Women Studies Degree?

Established in 1982, the graduate certificate in Women Studies is designed for students already enrolled in a terminal degree program at the University of Michigan. The Certificate, which can be combined with either a masters or a doctoral degree, aims to provide:.

An inclusive approach that examines the intersection of gender and other social identities and categories of analysis.

An opportunity to broaden and enrich analytical skills in one or disciplines while drawing on the interdisciplinary perspectives of Women’s Studies.

The graduate certificate in Women Studies consists of coursework totalling 15 credits. Core courses provide students with an understanding of feminist theory and methodology, while electives provide advanced coursework on women and gender in a student discipline. The certificate culminates in an advanced research project designed to incorporate a feminist perspective.

All certificate students are required to take Women Studies 530: Theories of Feminism. This course explores various schools of feminist thought over the last thirty years and examines how knowledge is produced in gendered ways from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Women Studies 601: Approaches to Feminist Scholarship in the Humanities.

Women Studies 602: Approaches to Feminist Scholarship in the Social Sciences.

Women Studies 603: Feminist Scholarship on Women of Color.

Certificate students are required to take two additional electives (3 credits each). One elective should fall outside of students primary discipline.

All certificate students will enroll in Women Studies 890: Advanced Research, and carry out a culminating scholarly project that demonstrates how they have integrated feminist perspectives with their discipline(s). The final project can be one of the following (or another format to be approved by the Certificate Advisory Committee in the Women’s Studies Department):.

Portfolio that integrates work in Women’s Studies with professional work.

In addition to submitting the final project, the student should submit an abstract and framing statement. These will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary committee, so the student should elaborate on any disciplinary conventions, terminologies, or practices that may not be readily accessible to an audience outside of the student’s specific area or discipline. The deadline for these materials is November 1 for Fall term graduates and March 1 for Winter term graduates. All components of the WS 890 should be submitted to the Women’s Studies Graduate Office.

The scholarly project should fall into one of the following categories (formats not falling into any of these categories require approval from the WS Certificate Advisory Committee):.

What is this project, how is it significant, and how does it fit into your work in graduate school?

How has this project been informed by coursework completed for the Women’s Studies Certificate?

How does this project contribute to the larger field of feminist studies?

Explain the impact of the Women’s Studies certificate program on the student as a scholar.

Approve this final project as the culmination of the Women’s Studies Certificate.
