Students may pursue a Combined PhD in WGSS with one of our five partnering departments: African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, English or Sociology.

FGSS Course Flyer featuring art by Cairo Mo '20.
We live in a moment when issues of identity, difference, and power continue to be highly, often violently, contested in the public sphere. FGSS helps students analyze how gender roles, relations, and identities intersect with hierarchies of power such as race, class, nationality, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, and age. Through personalized, interdisciplinary curricula and practical experience, our students learn critical gender and sexuality studies methodologies so that they can bring intersectional, social justice frames to their work in the world.
Additionally, the program offers a PhD minor that is open to all students currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Stanford.
Casey Patterson (English PhD Candidate, Clayman Fellow) will teach a new FGSS course Winter 2023 on Black Feminism and the SciFi of Octavia Butler.

PhD students at UC Berkeley may add a Designated Emphasis (DE) in Women, Gender, and Sexuality (DEWGS) to their major fields. Designed to enhance interdisciplinary graduate studies at Berkeley, the DEWGS provides curricular and research resources and opportunities to students who are already admitted to graduate degree programs on campus.
The designated emphasis program was developed to accommodate some of the many students who conduct graduate-level research in gender and/or sexuality related topics across numerous fields. Administered by the Department of Gender and Women's Studies, the designated emphasis program provides its students with certification as well as with a context for the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and development of research.

It may be taken at any time after successful completion of the first yearvb exam and the minimum course requirements. The completed exam must be judged satisfactory by the depth exam committee. Students may retake this exam only by petition. All students must pass this exam before being allowed to advance in the Ph.D.
The doctoral committee administers the exam, which takes on average approximately two hours. Please note the following:.
After successful completion of the oral defense, all four members of the committee certify the final dissertation when complete. Students may retake the oral qualifying examination once without petition. Advancement to candidacy is dependent on successful completion of the oral qualifying exam. All students must pass this exam in order to advance to candidacy.

PhD in English and Women and Gender Studies.
In 1994, the English Department and the Program in Women and Gender Studies created a new joint PhD designed to serve the needs of students whose interests combine both disciplines. Building on the strengths and resources of the English Department and Women and Gender Studies, students have the opportunity to work out an interdisciplinary approach to a research problem from an early point in their training, and benefit from the kind of interdisciplinary mentorship that is necessary to develop and complete an interdisciplinary dissertation.
The curriculum is structured similarly to the English Language and Literature PhD, but with the substitution of several core and other Women and Gender Studies courses for English requirements. These include a course on Theories of Feminism and one on Approaches to Feminist Scholarship, plus at least three additional Women and Gender Studies courses. In the first term of the second year, the student career will be reviewed to provide direction, counseling, and an early professional orientation. During the third year, students complete their preliminary examination, an oral exam based on two reading lists which define the student fields of professional expertise. The fourth through sixth years of the program are spent writing the dissertation.
All applications to the joint program are reviewed by both the English Department and Women and Gender Studies. Application materials should be sent to the Program in Women and Gender Studies. The GRE English subject test is not required for joint applicants. A sixth year of funding is provided through a range of competitive dissertation fellowships or a GSI appointment.

Entering the program as an international student with English as a second language.
Typically, students may transfer a block of 30 credit hours towards the PhD.
Only in exceptional circumstances will individual courses be evaluated for transfer to waive WGSS PhD coursework requirements.
This translates to earning no less than a B for a course to be counted toward the 30 credits required to complete the PhD. Students who fail to earn a B or better in a class and therefore cannot earn credit hours for the course may fall behind in the program. Insufficient progress on the dissertation may also cause students to fall behind. Failure to maintain reasonable progress through the program may result in suspension.
Students who fail to do so may be suspended from the program.
The candidacy exam marks the transition from PhD student to PhD Candidate. After successful completion of the candidacy exam, students will shift focus from studying coursework to pursuing independent research and writing a dissertation. The candidacy exam is therefore designed to show that students are intellectually prepared to pursue independent research by demonstrating mastery in a broad range of theories and concepts covered in coursework.
Regular PhD students should plan on taking the candidacy exam during Autumn semester of the third year. Direct-to-PhD students should plan on taking the candidacy exam during Autumn semester of the fourth year.
According to Graduate School rules, the oral defense must take place within one month of completion of the written portion. The date of the oral defense must be filed with the Graduate School at least two weeks prior to the exam date.
If the recommended timelines for program milestones are followed, candidates should have three years of funding to complete the dissertation. If a candidate fails to complete the dissertation during funded years, they may continue to pursue the dissertation at their own expense. Regular PhD candidates should plan on defending their dissertation by the Spring semester of the fifth year. Direct-to-PhD candidates should plan on defending their dissertation by the Spring semester of the sixth year.
PhD candidates are encouraged to seek funding for their dissertation research from all available sources, including those outside the university.
