The Creative Writing program in the English Language and Literature offers an M.F.A. degree only, with concentrations in either poetry or fiction. Each year the department enrolls only eight students, four in each concentration.

Students participate in a graduate writing workshop each semester and take 6 additional one-semester courses for credit, at least four of them in English or American literature, Comparative Literature, literature in the modern or classical languages, or cultural studies (typically two per semester during the first year and one per semester during the second year). First year students receive practical training by working as Editorial Assistants for Epoch, a periodical of prose and poetry published by the Creative Writing staff of the department. The most significant requirement of the M.F.A. degree is the completion of a book-length manuscript: a collection of poems, short stories, or a novel.

Teaching is considered an integral part of training for the profession. The Field requires a carefully supervised teaching experience as part of the training for the degree. The English, in conjunction with the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines, offers excellent training for beginning teachers and varied and interesting teaching within the university-wide First-Year Writing Program. Graduate students are assigned to writing courses under such general rubrics as Portraits of the Self, American Literature and Culture, The Mystery in the Story, Shakespeare, and Cultural Studies, among others.

The application must be submitted online.

A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing should be than just a writing workshop. It should prepare you for your post-degree career while giving you the space to grow and develop your own unique writing voice. Online workshops, reading tutorials, and one-on-one packet exchanges with notable published writers will help you deepen your understanding of your craft, while residencies and professional development will prepare you with the skills and connections you need to succeed after completing your creative writing degree.

The Drexel MFA course of study is fully adaptable to remote-learning.

Designed for aspiring writers, an MFA in Creative Writing empowers you to enhance your creativity, while sharing and developing your work within a supportive academic community.

There are three different types of MFA in Creative Writing programs: a traditional MFA, a low-residency MFA, and an online MFA. A traditional MFA takes two to three years and is completed entirely in person. Because of the rigorous schedule and, in some cases, teaching obligations, it can be extremely difficult to complete a traditional MFA and continue to work full-time.

A low-residency MFA lets students complete much of their coursework online, allowing them to attend the program remotely. Unlike an online MFA, which is completed entirely online, a low-residency MFA requires students to attend a few in-person residencies throughout the program. This gives you flexibility in completing your coursework while still benefiting from the workshop and networking experiences of a traditional MFA.

You'll take a concentration in fiction writing as well as electives in areas such as Novel Writing Intensive, Query Writing, or Revision Strategies.

The majority of your creative writing coursework can be completed online to accommodate your busy schedule and distance learning needs.

Become part of the editorial leadership team of Drexel Paper Dragon, the MFA literary magazine.

Optional in-person teaching assistantships let you gain experience and a salary that can be put toward your creative writing degree.

Drexel aims to offer the most civically engaged MFA in the country, using storytelling to effect change, build community, bring joy, and widen opportunities for expression in marginalized populations. Creative writing opportunities are available with incarcerated men and women, hospice patients, and children living with illness or disability.

Travel with your Drexel MFA community on optional creative writing retreats in the spring to the Veneto region of north east Italy or the summer to Collioure, France.

Join your fellow students and MFA alumni at optional creative writing retreats in the Highlights Retreat Center in the Pocono Mountains.

The Inaugural ResidencyStudents convene in early October for a five-day orientation and intensive craft residency.

The Professional ResidencyA distinctive factor of the Drexel MFA is the designated professional residency. This 3-day residency is designed to forge professional ties and gain real-world perspective on the publishing industry.

This education includes active discussions on the current publishing landscape, instruction on pitching, synopsis, and query writing, and creating a plan for making your publishing dreams come true. Ann and Brenda will also provide intimate access to agents and editors in a low-pressure environment.

Residency fees, lodging, and transportation are not included in the price of tuition. All prices are subject to change.

Whether your dream is to share your personal story as a memoir, to write a fantasy novel, or to create a lyrical collection of poetry, our low-residency Master of Arts in Creative Writing program can take your creativity and professionalism to the next level within a supportive community of peers and mentors.

Our low-residency format provides extreme flexibility for working adults, active-duty military members, veterans, and parents, meaning that you can pursue your writing goals online without interrupting your existing commitments to career, community, and family.

The 2023 summer residency will be held from Saturday, July 8th to Saturday, July 15th on University Campus.

The Saint Leo MA offers an affordable way for apprentice writers to explore and enhance their creative lives and to become part of a vibrant literary community.

The Master of Arts in Creative Writing is an advanced program that offers genre specializations in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. We especially acknowledge the needs of active-duty military members and veterans.

Online students can count on receiving excellent academics as well as opportunities for hands-on learning.

The program begins with a one-week annual summer residency, held on the beautiful Saint Leo University Campus, located north of Tampa. The residency is designed as an immersive and contemplative retreat. Students also get the chance to share and celebrate their own writing-in-progress with each other during informal open mics.

In a writing workshop course, each student creates and refines original work in fiction, poetry, or nonfiction. Each workshop is paired with a foundations course, where students read both contemporary and classic examples of writing in their chosen genre of study.

Produce a substantial, revised body of original creative work.

Demonstrate an understanding of various forms and structures of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry.

Generate original scholarship on the literary texts explored in this program.

Some of our MA students enter the program with no expectation of pursuing further advanced degrees or traditional academic careers. Some will already be immersed in careers that may or may not be linked to the creative arts. Some will wish to wholeheartedly pursue the writing life. All this together means that you will be ready for a successful writing career or continued studies upon graduation. Plus, our Career Services center on campus is always available to help connect you with a variety of experiential learning opportunities to fit your individual career goals.

Several of our MA students have pursued further graduate coursework in MFA programs in Creative Writing or MA programs in Literature.

This page covers everything you need to know in order to put together your best possible application to our program.

For most graduate programs in creative writing, including ours, the most important part of your application is a sample of your creative work. If you want to study fiction, you should send us a short story or a section of a novel. Poets should send poems nonfiction writers should send their best narrative nonfiction.

We read applications on a rolling basis until June 30th every year. Once your file is complete, we try to make a decision on your application within one week. Our upcoming academic year begins on July 3rd, 2023.

Advice on applying to the Saint Leo M.A. in Creative Writing.

All writing samples should be a minimum of 10 pages, and a maximum of 25.

Try to be as specific as possible, and tell us which genre you wish to pursue. Basically, we want to know who you are and what you might contribute to our literary community.

the MA in Creative Writing Program.

All admitted students begin our program by attending the one-week July residency. We accept applications on a rolling basis through June 30th each year.

Instead of relocating to attend a full-time graduate program, you attend classes on campus for just one week annually in July.

Low-residency degrees are particularly attractive to students who have career, community, or family commitments that make quitting a job and relocating across the country impractical or even impossible. Many low-residency programs require two residencies per year the Saint Leo MA requires just one, making it that much accessible.

Students who choose a low-residency program for graduate study do not come from any specific demographic. They range from recent college graduates who wish to continue their academic studies, to working professionals seeking to explore new career options, and to retirees pursuing the long-deferred dream of creative writing.

Our program is designed to be completed in just two calendar years. It requires 36 graduate credit hours of study. Students attend four semesters of study, plus three summer residencies.

We offer tracks of study in fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Within each of those genres, the possibilities are endless. We do not favor any particular school of writing we are excited by both literary and genre-specific styles (fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, YA, etc).

The ability to produce concise and thoughtful written work is a fundamental skill not just for fiction writers, essayists, and poets, but also for successful professionals in almost any field. This is in keeping with the mission of Saint Leo University, which fosters a student-centered environment in which the love of learning is of prime importance.

The reasons someone pursues a graduate degree in the arts are as varied as the students who seek those degrees. Our degree is aimed primarily at students who are approaching writing as a type of personal development, or those who are just beginning their exploration of the writing life. That means our community is one that offers mentorship and supportive critique, and provides models of the professional writing life in all its various forms, helping students build a base of skills in the study of both writing and literature.

The MA program at Saint Leo offers a broad approach to preparation for a possible writing career, requiring not only creative work but also the study of literature. These literature courses, called foundations courses, give an MA student a sense of both the historical and contemporary trends in their chosen genre of study.

As you explore your continuing education, costs need not be an obstacle. The Saint Leo MA is an affordable advanced degree, costing as much as fifty percent less than degrees at other institutions.

Financial aid programs are available and there are ways to help you finance your educational investments. It may be helpful to know that there are federal student loan programs for graduate and professional students. Graduate students may be eligible for up to $20,500 in Unsubsidized Direct Loans.

Saint Leo Creative Writing MA program helped me immensely as a reader and a writer.

Writing allows growth as a writer and as a person. The experience was absurdly personal. St. Leo is invested in its students. You get than you bargained for.

It can be intimidating to go back to school after decades of being in the workforce. I started my first semester at another university and wasn't happy. Best decision I ever made. Thanks to my studies there, I'm getting ready to release my first book at the end of this year!

Being a part of the Creative Writing program at Saint Leo was the right choice for me, as it allowed me to pursue my degree from another state while also working a full-time job.

I enjoyed the close-knit literary community that Saint Leo University provided in the Creative Writing Nonfiction program.

Participating in this program absolutely changed the trajectory of my life as both a student and educator.

While the curriculum allowed me to select a unique genre of creative writing to develop my nonfiction thesis, he said, it also allowed me to explore traditional forms of literature that I love, such as medieval British and feminist genres.

Nonfiction is the art of telling real stories ones that people can learn from, relate to and understand. It covers a wide range of styles and subjects, encompassing everything from personal essays, autobiographical writing and memoirs, to marketing, travel writing and magazine features.

Given the many career paths you could take by adding a concentration in nonfiction writing to your degree, it worth noting some potential career paths you could explore. One of the best things online education is the flexibility to learn something that has always interested you at your own pace. All you need to become a writer is a little imagination, a lot of hard work and the commitment to get started.

One of the biggest requirements to becoming a writer is the ability to accept and apply critical feedback, no matter your age. Each of these elements can help create the foundation from which you can develop your own writing style.

A career in writing can lead you to become a marketing copywriter, a screenwriter or a technical writer. You may become a development writer and use your writing skills to raise money for nonprofit causes. Perhaps you'll teach the craft of writing to others.

Because strong writing skills are necessary for most professions, an advanced writing degree can help you succeed in just any career field you choose. And an online advanced writing degree like SNHU master in creative writing can help provide the flexibility to make it possible.

Writing just may be one of the most versatile career fields around.

Content writing: Content writers create long and short-form articles for a variety of print and digital media. They often work as freelancers or as part of a marketing team.

Copywriting: Similar to content writing, copywriting is geared toward advertising and marketing. Copywriters use words to help sell products or ideas for brands and advertising agencies.

Technical writing: As the name implies, this style of writing focuses on technical materials, such as white papers, manuals and supporting documents. Technical writers share complex ideas in an accessible way.

This includes helping others strengthen and revise their writing while checking for grammatical and spelling errors.

Like with any degree, only you can decide the right path for you. Having strong writing skills can set you apart in just any career field you can name. There are endless opportunities to work professionally as a writer in business, government or in creative fields. Marketing and advertising, for example, are fields where strong writing skills and a creative mind are highly valued.

Jobs for writers and authors are expected to hold steady between 2021 and 2031, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Writers in the media and communication fields are predicted to enjoy an 6% increase in job growth in that same time period. Writing as a career field is both diverse and competitive.
