Ivy League Certificate Programs

The graduate certificate in computational science and engineering is only open to Princeton University graduate students who are currently enrolled. It is designed to recognize the achievements of students who have undertaken comprehensive training in these topics, both through formal course work and through research in their subject area.

The certificate program was originally proposed and designed to be part of the Program in Integrative Information, Computer and Application Sciences (PICASso) by Professor J.P. Singh, with the resources required to administer the program now provided by the Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (PICSciE).

Computation is now a crucial tool for discovery in the sciences, engineering, and increasingly so in the humanities. Scientific computation is also a diverse field. It requires a working knowledge of numerical analysis (to develop new and more accurate algorithms), best practices/learn/cse-graduate-certificate/colloquium in software engineering (to implement and maintain ever-growing scientific software systems), computer science (to exploit emerging trends in hardware and programming practices), and domain-specific expertise.

With the certificate now officially credentialed, the only significant change to the existing certificate program requirements will be a more formal colloquium each spring at which the program participants will present their research. Each certificate student will be required to present one 20-minute presentation during their program, ostensibly during their final non-DCE year.

To earn the certificate, students must complete four requirements: (1) take for credit and earn a grade of B or better in two core courses; (2) take for credit and earn a grade of B or better in one approved elective course, usually specific to the student’s research area; (3) give a research seminar as part of a colloquium with other program participants at the conclusion of the program; and (4) write a dissertation with a significant computational component, as judged by the dissertation advisor who must write a short letter to certify this requirement.

The Certificate in Programming prepares students to program computers in support of work in any area of study. While the certificate does not provide the grounding in theory and systems that the computer science majors do, it does provide a short path to programming literacy that can be completed in a span of four terms. Majors in Computer Science, and in the joint programs with Economics, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Psychology, or in Computing and the Arts may not pursue the Certificate.

The prerequisite for the Certificate is an introductory programming course, CPSC 100, 112, S115 or successful completion of an AP Computer Science course.

Students may not use any of the five required courses, indicated below, to satisfy the requirements of any major, multidisciplinary academic program (MAP), or other certificate. If such a course is required for another program, the student must substitute another course from the same category or a more advanced one for the Programming Certificate. No course taken Credit/D/Fail may be used to satisfy any of the requirements; no course may be used to satisfy more than one of them.

The Graduate Certificate in Africana Studies provides students with an interdisciplinary, comparative, cross-national approach to the social sciences and humanities. This approach enables participants to address their research interests from a wide variety of perspectives than is typically allowed in traditional academic disciplines. The Certificate Program expands the professional options of its graduates by providing interdisciplinary training and exposure to the totality of the African Diasporic experience.

The Medical Physics Education Program is available to enrolled Dartmouth PhD students in engineering and the physical sciences, and have an undergraduate preparation in physics. This program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP), and provides the curricular training required for successful completion of accredited Medical Physics Graduate Program. This pathway is required for a career in clinical medical physics and enables graduates to successfully sit for the ABR board exam and apply for CAMPEP accredited residency programs. Interested students must apply for admission to the accredited program after at the time of application to their PhD Program at Dartmouth or shortly afterwards. All students should discuss this option with their faculty advisor and one of the Program Directors. This program is also available to post doctoral fellows who may enroll in the CAMPEP accredited certificate program at Dartmouth allowing pursuit of a career in clinical medical physics.

The graduate certificate program enables graduate students already enrolled in PhD programs at Brown to develop methodological and theoretical expertise in the interdisciplinary field of gender and sexuality studies. Students earn the credential while fulfilling the graduate requirements of their degree-granting department.

The graduate certificate program in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GNSS) provides specialized professional training in critical methods informed by feminist, queer, trans, and intersectional approaches to difference. The program fosters a community of scholars dedicated to advancing current conversations in GNSS and developing theoretical frameworks drawing from traditional disciplines as well as from such interdisciplinary fields such as critical legal studies, critical race theory, digital humanities, disability studies, ethnic studies, media theory, new materialisms, performance studies, poetics, poststructuralism, psychoanalytic theory, public health, religious studies, science and technology studies, theories of embodiment, and transnational and postcolonial studies. In monthly meetings, students gather to share readings, discuss research and pedagogy, and workshop manuscripts.

In recent years, the GNSS graduate certificate cohort has ranged from 12 to 18 doctoral candidates working in more than a dozen disciplines, including American studies, anthropology, comparative literature, English, French studies, German studies, history, Italian studies, modern culture and media, music, philosophy, public health, religious studies, and sociology.

Admission to the graduate certificate program is rolling and primarily requires that students articulate a clear research agenda related to the study of gender and sexuality and a course plan.

The requirements for the Certificate Program include coursework, teaching or TAing a course relevant to gender and sexuality studies, regular participation in a reading and research group, and the presentation of a substantial piece of research.

The Certificate in Health Analytics is a 10-credit program designed to prepare students for careers in the state-of-the-art analysis of health data. Health analytics is an interdisciplinary research field focused on identifying and improving analysis techniques used on data collected from various areas of healthcare delivery, operations, and research. Examples include data from electronic health records, administrative claims from public and private insurers, vital records, surveys and data from wearable health technologies. Students learn to use rigorous statistical methods and computation tools, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of data sources, and gain hands-on experience in data analytics.

Human Resources Certificate programs provide significant personal and organizational development resources, as well as interdepartmental networking experiences. The multi-week, interactive format introduces practical tools and enables immediate application to real workplace challenges and opportunities.
