VCU School of Dentistry offers six masters and certificate advanced dental education programs, including General Dentistry, Endodontics (M.S.), Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (M.D. optional), Orthodontics (M.S.), Pediatric Dentistry (M.S.), and Periodontics (M.S.). All programs are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

Those enrolled in the advanced education programs are full-time resident trainees, considered to be the equivalent of full-time students. Under special circumstances, trainees may be accepted into some programs on a part-time basis.

Students enrolling in endodontics, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry and periodontics also are awarded a Master of Science in Dentistry upon completion of the requirements for the certificate and successful defense of a thesis. The certificate program and Master of Science in Dentistry must be completed concurrently.

Satisfactory completion of the program leads to the award of a certificate of training and certifies eligibility for examination by the appropriate specialty board.

The 12 or 24-month Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency program provides advanced education and clinical experience to prepare dental school graduates for a career in the practice of comprehensive general dentistry.

This 24-month program educates individuals to pursue careers as teachers, researchers and practicing clinical specialists of endodontics. Students completing the program earn a Specialty Certificate in Endodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

This four-year program at VCU Medical Center is designed to train superior oral and maxillofacial surgeons who are capable of practicing the wide scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery in a comprehensive, ethical, compassionate and knowledgeable manner. The program also offers an M.D. degree option.

The 24-month orthodontic postgraduate program teaches the latest in clinical care in an environment modeled after private orthodontic practice. Students completing the program earn a Specialty Certificate in Orthodontics and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

This 24-month program places emphasis on all phases of pediatric dentistry including trauma, preventive dentistry, restorative, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics and hospital dentistry. Students completing the program earn a Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

The 36-month periodontics graduate program consists of didactic and clinical study with a specific research component. Students completing the program receive a Specialty Certificate in Periodontology and a Master of Science in Dentistry degree.

Advanced Education in Esthetics and Operative (AEEOD) Dentistry.

The Advanced Education in Esthetics and Operative Dentistry (AEEOD) Certificate Program allows students to have direct interaction with most dental specialties, including Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics and Orthodontics. esthetics, restorative and functional needs.

The program exposes students to all specialty phases of dentistry and medicine as they apply to esthetics.

During their didactic curriculum, students attend prosthodontics-oriented classes such as Digital Dentistry, Biomaterials, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ), and Implantology. Students also attend Esthetics-oriented classes such as Advanced Operative and Esthetic Dentistry Treatment Planning Course, Comprehensive Evidence-Based Esthetic Dentistry Literature Review, and multi-disciplinary oriented lectures.

The two-year AEEOD Certificate Program starts on July 1 and ends June 30 of the second year of the program. The first three months of the program are dedicated to pre-clinical training so that students understand the techniques and treatment procedures during their clinical curriculum.

Successful completion of a combined Advanced Education-Master of Science program is expected to require a minimum of 36 months (specific conditions apply).
