The online MAT program is a three semester long cohort program, with off-site placement of its graduate interns at partner school districts in the Middle Georgia area, and across the state of Georgia.

This pedagogy-focused MAT degree program is designed to address a critical need for highly qualified and effective school teachers in the Middle Georgia area, and across the state of Georgia.

The MAT will provide a pathway to initial teacher certification and foster applied research in the areas of teacher practice, student achievement, professional development, assessment, and innovation for graduates who already have earned a Bachelor from a GaPSC accredited approved institution.

      MAE521: Content Area Instruction for Students with Mild Disabilities.

      This course focuses on expanding the understanding of development and cognition in and academic and functional performance of students with disabilities, how these are similar to and different from all developing students, and how this understanding informs the teaching of students with disabilities in the primary and middle school environments. Another area of exploration is the ways in which these differences need to be addressed within a standard aligned system that demands high expectations of students with disabilities so that they have true access to the general education curriculum.

      This course examines strategies to develop language, literacy, and communication in young children with varying abilities. It explores the importance of adult-child interaction and the effect of bilingualism, cultural diversity, cognitive ability, and language disorders.

      This course provides a foundation in program content and methodology for the teaching of language and literacy, the arts, and physical activity and physical education to young children, including children with special needs. Curricular content, modifications, integration of content area standards, the impact of new technology, and cultural and sociopolitical contexts are explored.

      The course focuses on strategic leadership and decision making, specifically in the context of the higher educational setting. The course examines contemporary leadership theories, with emphasis on transformational and transactional leadership styles.                     The College of Education offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program created especially for individuals without teaching credentials who have earned baccalaureate degrees in specific content areas and want to become teachers in an expeditious fashion. The MAT is a 36-hour graduate degree program with three tracks: Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education. Graduate School policy requires that students complete their program of study within six years.

                    The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program evaluates candidates in the MAT program at the following points in their programs of study:.

                    Candidates must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Candidates are reviewed for their academic and dispositional performance throughout the program.

                    Decisions regarding professional and ethical conduct will be guided by the professional and ethical conduct policy adopted by the professional education unit licensure programs and College of Education degree and licensure programs. These candidates may be required to complete professional growth plans.
