This is a research-oriented Master of Science in Molecular Biology. It is open for new students with a Bachelor degree to apply (both those from University of Wyoming and those from other institutions). Funding in this program is not guaranteed and is to be negotiated with the PI whose lab you will join.

30 hours of research and course credits are required. Absolute requirements include 6 credits of graduate Biochemistry and 2 credits of research seminar.

M.S. Biological Sciences Ph.D. in Neuroscience or Biological Sciences.

The program offers graduate study and research leading to a Master of Biological Science (M.S.) degree or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in either Neuroscience or Biological Sciences. Applicants applying through the Molecular Biosciences Program do not need to secure a mentor prior to application.

Ph.D. and M.S. Degree Programs A Bachelor degree in an area of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Math or Psychology is recommended. Factors that the program uses in its admissions process may include TOEFL scores (for non-native English speakers), reference letters, GPA and previous coursework and research experience.

All Master candidates must take an oral comprehensive exam near the completion of their graduate program.

Ph.D. Degree A Ph.D. student must complete 60 credits. This will include a mix of dissertation credits and graduate-level coursework credits.

Research Experience Plan A (thesis option) Master degree students gain research experience through their thesis and are expected to submit the results of their thesis work to at least one journal or conference. Plan B (project option) Master degree students gain some research experience in the context of their project. Ph.D. students will gain research experience through their doctoral work, journal or conference submissions, and attending conferences.

Financial Assistance A number of research and teaching assistantships are available for qualified graduate students. These appointments are normally for half-time assignments (19 hours per week) during the academic year. Some appointments may also be available during the summer. Assistantships will only be offered to formally admitted graduate students.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Biochemistry Molecular Biology.

The Biochemistry Molecular Biology offers programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These are research-based programs that provide interdisciplinary education and research opportunities studying the molecular basis of disease. Research projects include control of gene expression, DNA replication and rearrangement, cell migration, signaling mechanisms, membrane biology and membrane trafficking pathways, structural biology and assembly of macromolecular complexes, and glycobiology. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology PhD program is part of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) umbrella program.

An applicant must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and the equivalent major coursework for the program area to which they apply. To evaluate an applicant, the biology department requires the following:.

Develop skills to orally present scientific material to a broad range of audiences, including in courses and an oral thesis defense.

The student must pass a proctored essay test administered by the department at the beginning of the first semester.

All courses taken to satisfy conditional requirements or listed on the Advancement to Candidacy (ATC) must be completed with a letter grade. The culminating experience courses, BIOL 895 and BIOL 898, are the exception and will be graded on a CR NC basis.

A minimum of 30 units of upper-division and or graduate credit. May include up to 6 units of experimental courses in Biology.

A minimum of 21 units of the 30 total must be from graduate-level or paired courses. Six units may be from paired courses.

Students accepted into our research MS and PhD graduate program are financially supported by either a graduate research assistantship or a teaching assistantship. The Cell and Molecular Biology program is a dynamic interdisciplinary program spanning 4 colleges and 17 departments. The program offers diverse research opportunities in agriculture, engineering, nanotechnology, biochemistry, and basic biology. Our goal is to train students from around the world to work with the fundamental building blocks of life itself, to understand life processes, and to solve fundamental biological questions. We seek to improve human existence and living standards for the world through biotechnology. Students in the Cell and Molecular Biology program have many options for training in bacterial, plant, or animal systems. As the University of Arkansas is a Land Grant University, many of our research opportunities have an agricultural or engineering aspect. There are also many opportunities in basic science, health-related research, and entrepreneurial endeavors. We are also the most diverse graduate program at the U of A, with approximately two thirds of our students being international students. Although the program is primarily a Ph.D. program, we do offer a limited number of Master of Science opportunities.

The Cell and Molecular Biology program is an interdisciplinary graduate program that examines various aspects of cell function, structure, metabolism and chemical functions on, within and between cells. Students examine biomolecular interactions, relationships between biomolecular reactions and observed cellular properties, molecular genetics, protein chemistry and biological structures. Students also study the use of molecular detection methods in the detection or characterization of biological states in animal and plant sciences, systematics, forensics and health care.

Students may choose from biomedical research areas such as cell regulatory systems, protein biochemistry, molecular immunology, cellular and molecular toxicology, microbiology, and genomics.

From the beginning of their academic experience, biology majors are encouraged to get involved with research, and our department even offers a unique opportunity for community college students to spend two summers researching with us.

Two focused areas of research for our department are:.

Research interests in molecular, cellular and developmental biology include craniofacial and neurodevelopment, membrane biology, molecular immunology, microbiome studies, plant development and cancer biology.

Research activities involve national and international efforts addressing climate change and north temperate forests, long-term studies of neotropical migratory birds and investigations of harmful algal blooms in the Baltic Sea. Research efforts in evolutionary biology and systematics include co-evolution, plant-animal interactions, comparative morphology and anatomy, speciation, phylogenetics and biogeography.
