DENT 5596 Graduate Seminar I: 1 semester hour.

This seminar uses web-based activities and on-site campus activities to assist students in developing skills and abilities essential for successful participation in the MSDH program.

A course for practicing professionals aimed at the development and improvement of skills. May be applied to graduate degrees under special circumstances. May be repeated.

Title and number of credits are announced in the Class Schedule. Experimental courses may be offered no than three times with the same title and content. May be repeated.

DENT 6605 Program Development and Evaluation: 3 semester hours.

An of general principles of teaching, learning and evaluation in academic and community oral health programs. Emphasis on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs.

This course combines theoretical knowledge with practical application of principles and techniques for managing a health care environment and employees associated with providing care. Emphasis on organizational structure, human resource management, financial management, quality assurance, policy development, information management, grant writing and business planning.

DENT 6615 Progressive Dental Hygiene Theory: 3 semester hours.

Critical analysis of the dental hygiene process of care related to advanced preventive and therapeutic interventions to various population groups, technology and outcomes.

DENT 6619 Graduate Seminar II: 1 semester hour.

This course provides students with experiential learning in dental hygiene practice, research, education, and innovations in technology. The course will culminate in an updated portfolio that addresses career goals within and beyond graduate education.

DENT 6621 Dental Hygiene Clinical Instruction and Administration: 3 semester hours.

DENT 6626 Dental Hygiene Practicum: 2-4 semester hours.

Individualized experience designed to apply principles and theories in dental hygiene education or service-learning experience applying theories in rural and community health to improve access to care. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits. PRERE DENT 6620, or DENT 6610 and DENT 6632, or departmental approval.

A study of population groups that are at increased risk of poor health and a familiarity with policies and programs designed to reduce health inequalities. Emphasis on the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate an oral health program to increase access to care in an underserved target population.

DENT 6640 Independent Study in Dental Hygiene: 2-3 semester hours.

Specific problems selected on the basis of interest and preparation. May be repeated up to 6 credits.

Dental Hygienists work in dental offices, school system, health-related or governmental agencies, or teach in schools of dental hygiene. Hygienists examine patients’ teeth and gums, recording the presence of disease and or abnormalities. They remove stains and plaque from teeth take and develop dental x-rays place temporary fillings and periodontal dressings and smooth and polish metal restorations.

To be licensed, students must graduate from an accredited dental hygiene program and pass both a written and clinical exam. A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree is usually required to do research, teach, or work in public or school health programs.

Employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014, ranking among the fastest growing occupations, in response to increasing demand for dental care and the greater utilization of hygienists to perform services previously performed by dentists. Job prospects are expected to remain excellent.

The national average income for a dental hygienist is $60,000 and the average income for California is $80,000.

Hold a bachelor degree from a US accredited college university or international equivalent.

The University sets tuition rates in July for the upcoming academic year.

Applicants must submit an online application for admission to the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School. Paper applications are NOT accepted. Follow the Rackham Application Steps.

Prior to the interview, applicants will be sent a supplemental admissions worksheet. They will also be asked to complete the online learning assessment and a computer skills test.

The Master of Science in Dental Hygiene On-Campus Program immerses students in all of the resources and opportunities available at the University of Michigan. Taking classes on campus enables students to individualize their degree programs through electives, and to take advantage of all the resources available at a leading research university, including a world-class teaching hospital.

Courses are scheduled in a sequence to allow for completion of this 36-credit-hour program in a 24-month period. Full-time students will enroll in at least 9 credit hours during the fall and winter semesters over two academic years. A part-time option is also available. Transfer of credit from other graduate programs cannot be accommodated.

Initiative, all colleges and universities offering online education to residents outside of their state must be authorized by each state in which students reside to take courses. Residents of some states may not eligible for our program.

As part of this program, students will be required to student teach 1 day or each week.

In order to accommodate required individual and group study time, students should be able to commit at least 20 hours per week to the program (includes weekends). In order to accommodate student teaching and thesis research, students should have a minimum of one weekday day available.
