The Master of Science in Epidemiology is a 39-credit hour program that prepares graduates to study the distribution and dynamics of disease and health in populations, investigate causative factors and determinants of disease in populations, and advance the body of knowledge that will make it possible to control and or prevent disease and to optimize health. Graduates of the MS Epidemiology program work in a variety of settings including local, state, and federal agencies such as health departments and academic health sciences centers. The Master of Science in Epidemiology is considered a research degree. Those who intend to use the degree in a research setting such as a university are generally advised to pursue the MS degree. The thesis requirement gives the MS student valuable research and writing experience critical for research.

The Hudson College of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH). The MS program may be completed by full or part-time students and is offered in Oklahoma City.

U.S. Applicants: SOPHAS requires a separate official transcript from every U.S. and Canadian institution attended. Instructions for sending your transcripts to SOPHAS can be found here. You will need to have a copy of your transcripts in hand so that you will be able to complete the coursework section of the application. Do not enter foreign courses taken at Universities outside the U.S. or Canada into the coursework section of the application.

Applicants must select the same program(s) in the supplemental application as they did in the SOPHAS application. Please note that the MS Epidemiology program will be listed under Graduate College in the online application (MS PhD programs are listed under Graduate College' but are taught by the Hudson College of Public Health).

Student support opportunities to offset costs include graduate research assistantships and public health scholarships. Students may expect additional costs that include, but are not limited to, a personal computer, textbooks, insurance, and supplies.

Graduate research assistantships may be eligible for waiver of non-resident tuition.

Any MS or PhD student who has not previously completed the core MPH courses or earned a MPH degree will be required to complete an course in public health. At the first opportunity students should enroll in BSE 50 Foundations and of Public Health (3 hours).

Graduates of the UAB Epidemiology program have found employment in academia, research organizations and foundations, industry, public and private health services delivery organizations, and international agencies.

The Master of Science in Epidemiology degree is a 36-credit program that prepares students for careers in the public health arena that are focused on the surveillance and prevention of illnesses among diverse populations around the world. The Division of Epidemiology is one of the graduate divisions within the SDSU School of Public Health. It offers the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in Epidemiology.

Students seeking a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology are required to file a formal Official Program of Study (list all the classes that will be taken to fulfill degree requirements) after completing at least 12 units of study, and before completing the last 9 units.

Students can complete their degree in the Epidemiology concentration by choosing either Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Manuscript). If students select Plan A, PH 799A is required for completion of their degree, accompanied by a final defense of their thesis. If students select Plan B, PH 798 (Special Study) is required, and a scientific manuscript based on their research must be prepared for completion of the degree.

The school expects a student to complete the degree within seven years. Failure to complete the degree requirements within seven years will result in dismissal from the program.

If it is available, it is usually limited and highly competitive. The MPH Program helps students find part-time employment and assistantships by promoting opportunities from potential employers at VCU and professional public health organizations in the area. The majority of full-time MPH students work part-time, primarily in positions they have found through the MPH Program.

Note that courses not previously applied toward another degree may be accepted for transfer credit consideration. The transfer course(s) must be of graduate level, relevant to the field of public health, and be approved by the graduate program. The request must include an official copy of a transcript and a copy of the syllabus for each course being submitted for transfer consideration.

The curriculum of each graduate program has a specific sequence, and students should not take numerous courses prior to matriculation as courses taken out of sequence may negatively impact student progression of learning once in the program. Note that MSW MPH students do not enter the MPH curriculum fully until the second year of study. Therefore, it is possible for applicants to apply to both programs simultaneously or MPH Program during the first semester of the MSW Program.

For these programs, students do not enter the MPH curriculum until after their third year of clinical study. Students therefore wait to MPH program until their third year in medical or second year in pharmacy school. Administrators in each school will notify students of dual degree program options and when they should se programs.

And a secondary, supplemental application to VCU Graduate Admissions (the secondary application requires a $70 fee to VCU). Both applications must be received for an applicant to be considered by the Admissions Committee. Once an applicant submits the SOPHAS application, VCU will send instructions on complete the secondary supplemental application.

While these are not absolutely required, applicants who have taken such courses and performed well in them (i.e., grade of B or higher) will likely be competitive than applicants who lack this background. One or courses in research methods or epidemiology is also beneficial, as is experience with applications used for data analysis such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, etc.

It is ideal, but not required, for this experience to be related to health in general and public health specifically. Volunteer work relevant to the health field such as for mission trips, AmeriCorps, summers abroad doing community service, or in a local organization may be included as experience.

According to merit and the competitiveness of the applicant pool. If students who are offered admission into the program decline the invitation, then wait-listed students may be notified as these vacancies occur. Notification of wait-listed students will occur in the latter portion of April into early May.

Applications that are submitted by the deadline but have outstanding elements (e.g., waiting for official transcripts or letters of recommendation) will be monitored by the program and reviewed once the application is complete, depending on timing of application completion and available space in the program for the academic year.

Students who do not reply by that date will forfeit their place in the program.

For the MPH program, at least one letter, and preferably two, should be from an academic reference. If you have asked for a reference from someone you have worked with in a job, a letter from a supervisor is appropriate than a letter from a colleague. However, if you do not have professional references from the general health field, a reference from a past supervisor that addresses your performance on the job and can assess qualities like responsibility, level of maturity, and other elements that will lend to success in graduate school, is entirely appropriate.

The PhD program is typically completed over 4 years of full-time study.

The PhD in Epidemiology Program is accredited through the overall University accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The PhD Program accepts primarily full-time students and will occasionally consider applicants who wish to have a part-time student status.
