While there are prominent European Studies graduate programs in the neighboring states of Michigan, Indiana and Pennsylvania, we are the only European Studies MA program in Ohio. We are following broader trends in the US that have started supplementing individual language programs with interdisciplinary and possibly multilingual European Studies programs.

Our EURO MA allows students to carry out individualized research and examine different aspects of Europe by making use of a wide array of interdisciplinary approaches through history, politics, culture and or the arts. The goal is for students to develop advanced intercultural and international competency as well as gain work experience with an international company or organization. This is why study abroad and internships are core elements of the degree.

Language learning remains an integral part of the program. Through the study abroad component and by taking language courses at BGSU, students will have the opportunity to attain intermediate to advanced proficiency in a European Language other than English (unless they decide to study in Great Britain or Ireland).

The MA in European Studies will help prepare you for international careers in business, government, journalism, education, research, or the nonprofit sector (e.g. NGOs).

Upon completion of the master degree, students in the European Studies program are expected to be able to:.

Attain Advanced Low or higher (following ACTFL) guidelines proficiency in a European Langauge other than English.

Apply cultural knowledge of the European region in personal contexts.

Demonstrate ability to interact in professional contexts with Europeans.

Demonstrate ability to analyze and solve real life professional problems collaboratively in a professional European setting.

Master of Arts A total of 30 credit hours of coursework at the graduate level are required. Students can specialize in European Arts Letters, European Political Economy, Regional Focus (France, Germany Austria, Russia or Spain), or other European languages in combination with an arts and science or political-economic specialization.

A candidate may pursue a Master of Arts degree in European Studies under the following two plans: Plan I: Thesis (ES 6990) Plan II: Comp Reading Capstone (ES 6980).

EURO offers a dual Master degree with the internationally renowned Kelley School of Business for students interested in international business. The dual degree is a three-year program that awards both an MA and MBA degree. Students can finish this dual program in 66 credit hours rather than the 84 credit hours necessary to earn the two degrees separately.

While the Kelley School of Business courses focus on the fundamentals of business and prepare students to take high-level management positions in corporations, the MA program gives students the opportunity to study languages, cultures, politics, history, and economics, gaining in-depth knowledge of a particular country or region. This experience can be invaluable to a student who hopes to work in a multinational corporation.

Students in the European and Eurasian studies program are required to demonstrate proficiency in a modern language other than English by passing the Elliott School-administered foreign language proficiency reading and speaking examination at the currently-required level of proficiency. The Elliott School administers foreign language proficiency examinations once in the fall and once in the spring semesters. Students should plan to take the language proficiency examination as soon as possible following their matriculation in the program. Students have three opportunities to pass the examination. Failure to pass the examination for a third time results in dismissal from the program.

The Slavic and Eurasian Studies offers graduate training leading to the M.A. degree in Russian culture. Languages offered: Russian (six years). Areas of specialization include art history, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, economics, film, gender studies, history, legal studies, linguistics, literature, political science, public policy, theater and performance studies, translation, and visual and information literacy. Students have the opportunity to participate in our Duke international program abroad in Nice, France and Tallinn, Estonia for Russian Language and Culture, as well as other related study-abroad programs and internships. The Department maintains a cooperative relationship with the departments of Economics, Cultural Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Literature, and Theater, the programs in Jewish Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, and the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke, as well as with related programs at UNC-Chapel Hill.
