The Geological Sciences and Engineering offers research-oriented M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geology, geophysics, and geological engineering as well as two interdisciplinary programs in hydrologic sciences.

Apply physics, chemistry, meteorology, hydrology, biology, geology and engineering science to understanding the Earth, recognizing and coping with environmental hazards, exploiting natural resources while preserving the environment, and exploring Earth context in the solar system. Although often equated with geotechnical engineering, a discipline closely aligned with civil engineering, geological engineering is correctly characterized as a program focused on geologic hazards mitigation and natural resource characterization. In one sense, geological engineering is a form of environmental engineering.

Armed with an array of cutting-edge technologies and tactics, the University of Nevada, Reno geophysics program prides itself on bringing traditional classroom subjects, such as mathematics and physics, into the great outdoors. Hence its motto: The earth is our laboratory.

Graduate-level study in geophysics explores the global properties of the earth (gravity, magnetic field, crustal motions, interior dynamics) and the determination of near-surface and interior properties through the use of seismology, electromagnetics, potential fields, remote sensing, geodesy and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

Interdisciplinary with the Desert Research Institute, The Graduate Program in Hydrologic Sciences offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in both Hydrology and Hydrogeology. The program focuses on studies of water in the environment including its role in geologic and biogeochemical processes, ecosystem functions, and climate science.

Our graduate students enjoy a full complement of modern facilities, instrumentation, laboratories and technical support personnel, all paired with the many natural laboratories of Nevada, California and the western United States.

March 4, 2019 ? Reynolds, Jr. Research Award. This $2,480 award also includes one year of CMS membership. Additionally, Miller received a $2,000 student research scholarship from the Unconventional Reservoir Special Interest Group of The Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts. Lastly, Miller was granted the 2016 Spackman Award by The Society for Organic Petrology (TSOP). All three awards will help support Miller’s neutron scattering, microscopy, and experimental activities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and the University of Wyoming. Graduate Students Jason Alexander and Mat Dunlop Receive GSA Research Grants.

March 4, 2019 ? Graduate students Jason Alexander (Ph.D.) and Mat Dunlop (Ph.D.) were both recently awarded research grants from the Geological Society of America (GSA).

The Geophysical Data Processing course is designed to provide basic background and training for the processing of digital seismic data, particularly that used by the petroleum industry. The emphasis is placed on the principles and practicality of the major processing methods, including sampling, filtering, deconvolution, seismic modeling and migration imaging.

Graduate assistantships and fellowships including tuition and fee waivers are funded from three sources: appropriated state funds, endowments, and research grants and contracts. Applicants to the MS Geophysics program who submit all documents required by the admission procedure by February 1 of any given year will be considered for a state appropriated or endowed graduate assistantships and fellowships to start the following fall semester notification of successful applicants will be during February and March. Michael Bradford, senior in geology and geophysics with a minor in geological engineering, does not shy away from dirty work. Currently, he is doing research with the Missouri Bat Census that involves checking caves for bats with White Nose Syndrome (WNS), a disease that causes abnormal behavior in bats and eventually leads to their death.

The Geophysics Concentration combines a strong foundation in geology with additional depth in geophysics, physics, mathematics, and associated quantitative and computer skills. Students in this concentration are well prepared both for employment opportunities in a wide variety of geosciences and geotechnical fields, and for subsequent graduate training that includes geophysics, seismology, geodynamics, energy exploration, environmental geophysics, space sciences, and resource management.
