The Chicana and Chicano Studies Department at the University of New Mexico is an interdisciplinary program. The purpose of the department is to promote a critical understanding of Chicano/Hispano/Mexicano communities through teaching, research, and advocacy. Since our program resides at the flagship institution of the state that has the largest percentage of Hispanics in the country, this mission is integral to furthering the understanding of New Mexico’s present and the nation’s future.

The program offers courses on gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, arts and culture, political and social mobilization, immigration and citizenship, history and heritage, land grant studies, Chicana feminism, and queer studies. We address our three areas through a curriculum taught in both English and Spanish and maintain a regional and transnational focus on New Mexico, the U.S. Southwest, and Mexico. We view our partnerships with community and student organizations as central to our academic mission and our objectives for student learning.

Fifty years ago, in the midst of struggle, Chicano Studies was born at Cal State LA. As the first Chicano Studies program in the nation, it began in fall of 1968 with four classes. This year, the Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies (CLS) Department, with over 150 annual course offerings, recognizes 50 years of transforming minds and communities. CLS has helped produce alumni who are scholars, educators, politicians, artists, health care providers, cultural workers, and . With Dr. Dolores Delgado Bernal as the new chair, the anniversary marks a rebirth of the department and a time to build upon our legacy of academic achievements, creative projects, and public service. We invite the campus and wider communities to participate in our September 6thkickoff and the many 2018-2019 planned activities that honor our intellectual and creative history and remind us of the work still left to be done.

The Master of Arts degree in History, with a concentration in Chicana Chicano Studies, is for those who intend to pursue carers that are beneficial to the Chicana and Chicano community: to better understand the culture and history of Chicana and Chicano communities offer educational opportunities for those planning to become professionals who will serve these communities create options for those planning to continue with their academic careers in Chicana and Chicano studies and further serve the needs of the community’s Hispanic population as a designated Hispanic Serving Institution.

Students must meet the CSU requirements for admission to a master’s degree program. Please consult the Graduate Admissions section in this catalog for complete information. In addition, applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester units and a 3.0 grade-point average in upper-division history courses. Only those who have at least a 3.5 GPA in upper-division history courses may request an exemption. After fulfilling the university requirements, the applicant’s records are sent to the History Department’s graduate coordinator for additional evaluation. Students with deficiencies will be considered for admission only after they have completed courses approved by the coordinator.

A study plan must be filed after 13 units of coursework are completed.

The Chicana and Chicano Studies was originally founded to address the immediate needs of Chicana and Chicano students at CSUN, the department has grown and flourished because and in spite of the different times it has endured. From the political and cultural revolutionary renaissance of the 1960s-1970s, through the conservative and neo-liberal backlash of the 1980s-1990s, through the climate of the 21st Century, Chicana o Studies at CSUN has committed to contribute to the development of well-rounded critical thinkers, participants of and contributors to society.

A primary objective of the department is to assist in the development of analytical and communication skills of students. The curriculum and pedagogical praxis introduce students to subject matter related to the multidimensional experiences of Chicanas os. Chicana o Studies offers courses in every academic discipline except mathematics and science. over, the department’s mission is designed to prepare students for careers in an increasingly competitive labor market and for graduate professional school opportunities upon graduation from CSUN.

Graduate and academic programs in Chicana o Studies are particularly suitable for students who are preparing to enter the fields of community service, local government, teaching or social work. It is also preparation for those intending to enter various graduate professional fields, such as history, sociology, psychology, library science, political science, social work, law and urban studies. The program incorporates ethnic studies content and perspectives into state-adopted curriculum. Students successfully completing the program will not be required to take the California Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET).

For nearly five decades, the Chicana o Studies is proud to have worked with students from the San Fernando Valley and the greater Los Angeles and Ventura County areas, as well as students from throughout the country and the world. Indeed, Chicana o Studies at CSUN continues to be at the forefront in helping to form the future.

The interdisciplinary nature of and graduate degrees in Chicana o Studies prepares students for work in a wide range of fields. Students find employment in areas such as education, community and social services, law, government, counseling, the performing arts, probation and business. In addition, Chicana o Studies provides students with many pathways for graduate work in areas that include education, history, political science, sociology, social work, women’s studies, ethnic studies, urban studies, law and the arts.

For this reason, it has always shared a special relationship with Chicana o student organizations at CSUN. The principal student organization that has coexisted and developed parallel to the department is El Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA). MEChA is the umbrella organization for various groups, subcommittees and a number of special ad-hoc committees, such as Aztlan Graduation, Raza Transfer Day and Raza Youth Conference. MEChA often serves as an advisory organization to the department, as student input has always been crucial to the planning and implementation of departmental activities.

Students have the opportunity to complete the University’s writing requirements through courses offered by the Chicana o Studies. The fers three entry-level writing classes, two of which are stretched over two terms, A in the Fall and B in the Spring: CHS 113A and CHS 113B, Stretch Composition and CHS 114A and CHS 114B, Stretch Composition. The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies is one of the first of its kind in the nation. We are an interdisciplinary and transnational program of teaching, research, and public service that provides students with the opportunity to explore the history, politics, culture, and ethics of Chicana/o-Latina/o communities on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Our mission is to develop culturally competent 21st century leaders who engage in social-justice oriented community service and scholarship. We achieve our mission through our curriculum, research, and knowledge production, which explores race, gender identities, class, immigration, and ethnicity, and emphasizes the U.S.-Mexico borderlands (history, sociopolitical contexts, comparative and symbolic borders), expressive arts (art, cinema, music, theater), and community practices for social change (health, education, community organizing).

The Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies doctrol program offers a comparative and transnational approach to the study of Mexican- and Latin-American-origin communities in the United States, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The curriculum offers students the opportunity to study issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality from both historical and contemporary perspectives. The interdisciplinary program is designed to provide students with an extensive knowledge base and the intellectual tools to understand the unity and diversity of U.S. Latina/o populations.The primary objective of the program is to offer students a multidisciplinary, broad-based perspective on the study of Chicana/os and Latina/os, as well as to introduce them to the central questions, topics, and applications within this field of inquiry. Chicana/o and Latina/o studies maintains a central focus on U.S. Chicana/o and Latina/o populations, offering a variety of courses, some focusing on particular national-origin groups or specific academic disciplines, and others organized comparatively and across disciplinary boundaries.

The department of Chicana and Chicano Studies strives to fortify the connection between UCLA and its surrounding urban context and to shatter the ‘ivory tower’ myth of the university as above and apart from the rest of society. Our graduates, we believe, are the ultimate product of these efforts and each year, we’re reminded of their ability to integrate their overlapping commitments to academic success, community service, and social justice.

The Chicana Chicano Studies Program (CCSP) employs a dual mission at Eastern Washington University (EWU). The program’s first mission is to significantly contribute toward enhancing opportunities for the participation of Chican and Latin students in higher education. This mission is achieved by vigorously recruiting Chican and Latin students, and providing the essential support needed for experiencing a positive and successful academic career at Eastern Washington University. A parallel CCSP mission is augmenting EWU’s goal in addressing diversity by providing all students, regardless of ethnicity, with a critical Chican Latin Studies curriculum resulting in a comprehensive and holistic understanding and appreciation of Chican and Latin communities. Further CCSP is committed to enacting initiatives that sustains the Program’s dual mission. The Chicana Chicano Studies Program is therefore structurally divided into three distinct components.

The Chicana Chicano Studies Program’s student recruitment efforts involve various activities aimed at encouraging Chican and Latin students to pursue educational opportunities at EWU. Specific recruitment activities include visiting high schools and community colleges, staging university based student visitations, participating in educational and community career fairs, utilizing Spanish media (radio, television and newspapers) to disseminate information educational opportunities at EWU, networking with Chican Latin community organizations and other recruitment-focused initiatives.

The Chicana Chicano Studies Program also provides a variety of academic and non-academic support services for students. Such services include academic advising, scholarship information and awards, mentor relationships, culturally based initiatives, linkages for tutoring needs, a college orientation class and other related student support services. specifically, the CCSP assists student transition into the university by advocating on the students’ behalf with other university departments and offices (i.e., Admissions Office, Financial Aid, Housing and Residential Life). Additionally, the CCSP assists students in becoming familiar with university regulations and practices.

The Chicana Chicano Studies Program also houses the CAMP program (College Assistance Migrant Program), which is designed to recruit and retain migrant students during their first year of college at EWU. The CAMP program provides an array of comprehensive and essential academic support services and financial assistance for CAMP student participants.

The CCSP offers a Chicana Chicano Studies academic minor designed to provide all students, regardless of ethnicity, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and critical understanding and appreciation of Chican and Latin communities. The CCSP focuses primarily on Chican and Latin historical experiences of colonization and neo-colonization, economic and cultural contributions to US society, and historical and contemporary struggles, movements, and strategies of resistance and survival.

The CCSP’s offerings include lower and upper division coursework. The Chicana Chicano Studies minor provides students with an inclusive and interdisciplinary understanding of Chican and Latin experiences in the U.S. Specifically, the minor prepares students for the rapidly changing demographic trends in the U.S. and provides critical knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to an ethnically and culturally diverse society. In tandem with this approach, the CCSP offers a rigorous academic program of study that prepares students for graduate and professional schools and employment in community based organizations or the non-profit industrial complex. While the minor is especially suited for those students applying to graduate school, teaching in K-12, educational administration including counseling psychology, social services positions, business, educational, and community organizing, the minor is appropriate for all major fields of study given the discipline’s interdisciplinary foundation. Chican s and Latin s are now the largest racial ethnic groups in the nation, and the Chicana Chicano Studies minor will provide all students with an appreciation of the history, political, social, and cultural realities of Chican s and Latin s in contemporary U.S. society.

CCSP is committed to networking and establishing contacts with all communities throughout the state of Washington with a particular focus on educational related issues, initiatives, and policies. CCSP’s outreach efforts include public seminars, lectures and cultural and art exhibitions. The Program also publishes and disseminates throughout the US an electronic quarterly newsletter, Q-VO, which informs students and the community CCSP activities.

INTRODUCTION TO CHICANO CULTURE.

Satisfies: a university graduation requirement–diversity. A study of Chicano culture providing an initial of its roots and conflicts. Specific components discussed are cultural identity, customs, language, psychology and the arts.

Cross-listed: HIST 218.Satisfies: a university graduation requirement–diversity. This course offers a study of Chicano history from the time of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, to the present. Specific themes discussed include the Mexican American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848, the economic, political and social conditions after the Anglo-American conquest of the southwest, Mexican immigration to the U.S., Chicano labor history, the Chicano movement and other Chicano themes.

CHICANAS AND LATINAS IN THE U.S. 5 Credits.

Pre-requisites: CHST 101. This course provides a description and analysis of the experience of Chicanas and Latinas in the United States. First, the course presents a review of Chicana studies scholarship and the evolution of Chicana feminist theory. Next, the course examines the historical, cultural, political and social-economic themes which define the experience of Chicanas Latinas in the United States.

SURVEY OF CHICANO LITERATURE.

Notes: CHST 101 or CHST 218 recommended. This course will offer students an of the historical development and current trends in Chicano Literature. The course will focus on the literary forms of poetry, novel, and the short story. The class will give students an understanding of various theoretical approaches utilized in critically analyzing literary works. Students will be expected to read, discuss, and theoretical techniques on specific Chicano literary works.

CHICANO-LATINO POLITICS IN AMERICA.

Pre-requisites: CHST 101, CHST 218, HIST 218 or permission of the instructor. This course presents an of the general direction of current scholarship on the Chicano Latino family, with a special focus on basic familial structure and the dynamics of change. First, the course examines traditional interpretations and methodologies and suggests alternative theoretical perspectives. Second, the course examines research issues such as familism, machismo, gender roles, parenting, divorce, family violence, aging, immigration and family, and public policy on family life.

The course is designed to accomplish three objectives. First it presents a typology of the diverse experience of Latina o Communities in the US. Second, it provides a critical review of theories and methods utilized in the study of the Chicano-Latino experience in the US. Third it incorporates a field research component whereby students the theories and methods examined in the course.
