The genomic data science concentration is designed for students interested in the computational aspects of genetics and genomics research. The goal of this concentration is to provide students with training in broadly applicable analytical and computational skills from the emerging field of data science to address important questions in human and molecular genetics. The structure of the M.S. program provides a framework for the progressive development of a mastery of the current state of the subject matter in human and molecular genetics and an ability to synthesize this information and apply this foundation to the identification of key areas of investigation and experimentation in this discipline. In addition, students will develop skills in the various means of communicating both the core of human and molecular genetics knowledge and the expression of experimental design, results and interpretation to a variety of potential audiences.

Oral communication skills: The candidate will demonstrate the achievement of an appropriate level of oral communication skills with respect to the content, organization, logical flow, presentation and appropriate use of language incorporating the use of visual aids, as measured by rubric.

Problem-solving skills: The candidate will demonstrate an appropriate level of skill in the identification and selection of meaningful problems to be addressed in research in human and molecular genetics, including the ability to defend said identifications and to design and develop appropriate methods to solve said problems as measured by rubric.

Integrated knowledge of human and molecular genetics: The candidate will demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge of the current elements of human and molecular genetics as related to disciplinary specialization and a detailed understanding of the individual area of scholarship, including an appropriate familiarity with the research literature and the ability to evaluate and critique publications as measured by rubric.

Basic science, research-intensive, non-thesis curriculum for medical students.

Individuals who are participants in medical training (the Doctor of Medicine program) at VCU may be eligible for enrollment in a research-intensive, non-thesis graduate curriculum. This basic science option builds on the core of disciplinary material embedded in the first two years of training in the medical school curriculum. Additional exposure is provided to specialized areas in basic science disciplines in concert with an intensive research experience leading to the preparation of a report in the form of a manuscript suitable for publication. The program is designed to be completed within 12 to 15 months. Subject matter related to the core material and or suitable elective courses taken in the didactic phase of medical training correspond to a minimum of the equivalent of 24 graduate credit hours. The equivalent of 12 credit hours may be applied to the M.S. degree program in which the student is enrolled in accordance with Graduate School policy.

The Human and Molecular Genetics offers a comprehensive program in graduate study leading to a Master of Science in Human Genetics.

Students must complete a minimum of 36 graduate credit hours. Students may be required to take an additional one hour of directed research after the second spring semester if needed.

With the sequencing of the human genome, genetics has become an increasingly important aspect of modern medical care. The medical genetics residency program recognizes the invaluable contributions that medical genetics healthcare professionals make in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of genetic diseases and the difference these individuals make in the lives of patients and families.

We strive to train a new generation of physicians who, through their expertise in medicine and genetics, will become leaders in a rewarding specialty that will improve the health of our patients, their families, and our community.

We have two possibilities for training in Medical Genetics and Genomics:.

A two-year, categorical Medical (clinical) Genetics and Genomics residency that requires prior satisfactory completion of 24 months of direct-patient-care-related, ACGME-accredited residency training in a specialty other than Medical Genetics and Genomics. At the end of the program, a trainee should be eligible to take the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) examinations.

A four-year, combined Pediatrics Medical (Clinical) Genetics and Genomics training program. The first year of training is spent entirely in Pediatrics in direct patient care experiences. During the final 36 months, continuous 6-month assignments alternate between Medical Genetics and Genomics and Pediatrics, with the option for up to 9 months spent in clinical genetics and genomics in the 4th year. Residents should enter the combined training residency at the first postgraduate year level (PG-1). A resident may enter a combined residency at the PG-2 level only if the first residency year was served in a categorical residency in Pediatrics in the same academic health system. Combined training in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics and Genomics should allow the development of physicians who are fully qualified in both specialties. Physicians completing this training should be competent pediatricians and medical geneticists capable of professional activity in either discipline. At the end of the program, the trainee should be eligible to take both the Pediatrics board examination and the Medical Genetics and Genomics board examinations.

Rotations in medical genetics in both programs are divided among the pediatric and adult genetics services (outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations), metabolic genetics (inpatient consultations and outpatient clinics), prenatal genetics (primarily outpatient consultations), cancer genetics (primarily outpatient), laboratory rotations (clinical cytogenetics, clinical biochemical genetics, and clinical molecular genetics), electives, and research time. There are weekly continuity clinics in the 2-year program in the 4-year program, Pediatrics continuity clinics occur in the first two years, and Genetics continuity clinics are held in the last two years.

We also have weekly clinical patient conferences, monthly journal club, research conferences, and a strong didactic program involving a number of formal courses that are taken together with our genetic counseling graduate students.

Regarding the Pediatrics component of the 4-year combined training program:.

The UC Irvine Pediatric Residency Program recognizes that providing medical care for children is a privilege as well as a responsibility and believes in providing residents with a top-notch, broad-based educational experience in a collegial environment. Our philosophy has earned us our reputation as a resident-friendly program. Our Pediatric residency integrates patient care, didactic teaching, and research to fulfill this fundamental mission. Training in pediatrics focuses on the total care of the child from birth through young adulthood and provides a strong clinical and educational foundation through experiences with a broad spectrum of pathology, normal development, preventive healthcare, and use of community resources.

The medical center offers high-level medical and surgical inpatient services, including a regional burn unit and a county-wide Level I trauma referral center. Designated as a Level III regional perinatal center, UC Irvine Medical Center provides the only combined tertiary referral center in the county for high-risk maternal and neonatal care. UC Irvine-affiliated ambulatory pediatric clinics provide outpatient primary care services.

There are than 600 providers on the medical staff representing than 30 specialties. Together with UC Irvine, CHOC is the largest provider of pediatric services in Orange County.

Each month, the editors of The American Journal of Human Genetics interview an author of a recently published paper.

Conceptually, the process of communicating our work to other genetics researchers and the larger scientific community was a constant source of motivation for the project. Along the way, we have gotten push-back many times on concepts that are central to this work including questions the value of genetic risk prediction in general, the feasibility of building genetic risk prediction models in one population and carrying to another, and the ethics of reporting estimates of genetic risk to individuals for whom those risk estimates may not be very accurate. Building on the current work to contribute to these larger conversations has been very exciting and continues to motivate us to work further on this research.

As the application of genomics technologies in healthcare continues to increase rapidly, graduates from our program will have a multitude of lucrative career opportunities. While applicants typically have degrees in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, or other related fields, applicants with degrees in other fields of study will be considered.

Students who are missing a prerequisite course requirement or are looking to improve their GPA can choose to take an SCU Accelerated Science course and complete the requirements in as little as five weeks.

18 semester credits (27 quarter credits) of life and physical science courses with a grade of C or higher. These students must enroll in a competency-based, self-paced, zero-credit, online module in biology and or chemistry prior to or during their first term of enrollment. Students must successfully pass the module prior to week five of the first term.

Minimum of 6 semester credits (9 quarter credits) of General Biology, Human Anatomy, and or Physiology.

As of the Spring 2023 academic term, SCU is unable to offer enrollment into our online programs to residents of the following states districts: Delaware, and the District of Columbia.
