The Master of Science degree in the Immunology Infection program is designed for those students interested in a career that will require an elevated level of expertise and experience in basic immunology and microbiology, host-pathogen interaction, microbial pathogenesis, and cancer immunology. The program is designed to be completed in two years and includes coursework and laboratory work, which culminates in a thesis.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology (MBI) conducts one of the premier infectious disease research programs in the Northwest, as demonstrated by the success of our faculty in competing nationally for extramural grant funding and publishing high-impact papers. Research funding comes from a range of sources such as the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Agriculture, National Science Foundation and the Montana Agricultural Experimental Station among others. Over the past five years, MBI averaged over $6 million for annual research expenditures. MBI is also home to an NIH Center of Biomedical Research Excellence in Zoonotic and Emerging Infectious Diseases, which provides substantial core facilities and training opportunities for junior investigators. MBI is housed in a state-of-the-art facility with core laboratories for flow cytometry, cell biology, and molecular sciences, as well as pathogen containment facilities for small (BSL-3) and large animal research (ABSL-2). Instrumentation suites house equipment for DNA sequencing, genomic analysis, flow cytometry and cell sorting, and confocal microscopy.

Degrees Offered are M.S. in Microbiology and Immunology (Plan A), M.S. in Microbiology and Immunology (Plan B), and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology.

The curriculum is a robust blend of academic learning and hands-on clinical training. Students begin with four semesters of lecture and bedside demonstration in medical and behavioral sciences. This foundational coursework is followed by four semesters of clinical rotations in a wide range of disciplines and settings.

The Center for Translational Immunology investigates the cellular and molecular components of the immune system to better understand complex diseases and processes.

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies in Biomedical Science and Enterprise program prepares graduates for a range of exciting careers in the biomedical industry or advanced degrees in science, business or law. The program offers an innovative approach to education.

The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) in Biomedical Science and Enterprise program equips students to enter the biomedical enterprise workforce through its unique interdisciplinary coursework in science, law and business, accompanied by projects and internships.

The Translational Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program provides an innovative and interdisciplinary training experience that integrates classroom education, laboratory research and professional development. The program positions graduates to become leaders in a wide variety of biomedical careers.

The Immunology program examines basic functions and evolutionary origins of the immune response and attempts to understand and control the immune response during autoimmunity (insulin dependent diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, emphysema and autoimmune uveitis), allergy,viral and microbial infections, and as it relates to the onset of cancer (as in inflammatory bowel disease).

Develop better diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that reduce and or stop disease. To do so, we investigate mechanisms that promote inflammatory immune cells and drive inflammation autoimmunity.

Complement basic research (immunological research tools and animal models of autoimmunity) with translational research (MS patient samples) to provide solutions tailored to MS patients.

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology, an administrative division of the School of Medicine, is a unit of The Graduate School. It offers instruction leading to the doctor of philosophy degree. A terminal master of science degree is granted only under special conditions. The department is highly regarded in many scientific disciplines, including immunology, microbial pathogenesis, virology, infectious diseases, host/pathogen interactions, molecular genetics, prokaryotic and eukaryotic molecular and cellular biology, and cancer biology. Research in the department is supported by funds from the University, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and other private foundations and granting agencies.

A variety of modern equipment is available in individual laboratories or shared by multiple users throughout the department. Well-equipped research laboratories are supplemented by specialized rooms dedicated to tissue culture, controlled temperature environments, BSL3 physical containment for research on microbial select agents, supervised animal care, etc. In addition, the University operates an extensive network of core facilities with major equipment and expert support staff, including flow cytometry, genomics, proteomics, oligonucleotide synthesis, DNA sequencing, X-ray crystallography, NMR, animal models (transgenic mouse and embryonic stem cell services), animal histopathology, bioinformatics, gene chips, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, and mass spectrometry.

The primary objective of the Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) track, one of five sub-plans of the PSM Applied Biosciences GIDP, is to instruct and prepare students for an occupation in the diverse field of biomedical sciences. The focus in the MMI track is training students to attain a graduate level biomedical education with an emphasis on medical microbiology, immunology, and virology.

The disciplines of microbiology and immunology started centuries ago with the development of the simple microscope (the 1600 ). Using this new scientific tool and the seminal work by major microbiologist’s in the 1800’s, led to the vanquishing of the theory of spontaneous generation as the source of disease. The ultimate cause of the disease was shown, using hypothesis-based scientific investigations, to be microorganisms or bacteria, and became known as The Germ Theory of disease. These foundations in Medical Microbiology led to queries into how one could prevent disease by vaccination and by the use of antisera (antibody). These studies used antibodies raised against the bacterial toxins in animals. The antitoxin serum led to the use of passive immunization to protect and cure infectious diseases and vaccines against these deadly agents. This work was seminal in the development and futures discoveries in the field of immunology. Major research and discoveries in the areas of medical microbiology and immunology have played a major part in the rapid advances in genomics, bioinformatics, and biotechnology. These technologies have also had a major impact on recent advancements in MMI.

This innovative curriculum will give students the ability to take various career paths upon graduation. This could include doing research at the bench to manage a laboratory at a university or in industry. With knowledge gained in business and legal fields, our trained scholars can also become involved in the business side of biomedical science. Graduates from this track will be ready for such diverse professional vocations in the areas of: biotechnology, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, local or national government, academic institutions, plus positions in immunologic and microbiologic biotechnology companies.

The MMI subplan is working in alliance with the Certificate Program in Microbiology and Immunity (MIGCP) which is housed within the Immunology. Upon admission to the PSM-ABS MMI track, the 15 units completed by the student for the MIGCP certificate may be transferred as fulfillment of the Core Science and Science Electives Modules of the MMI subplan.

The Graduate College sponsors several Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs (GIDPs) in addition to the many interdisciplinary possibilities available through regular graduate degree programs. GIDPs transcend departmental boundaries by facilitating cutting edge teaching and research at the nexus of traditional disciplines.

A Bachelors (or equivalent) degree with a major in an area of biosciences from an accredited institution.

The ABS PSM program is designed specifically to prepare students to competitively enter the scientific workforce. During the two-year course of study, students will gain a strong understanding of the applications of the biological sciences to real world problems, including those faced by public institutions and private industry. A minimum of 36 unit hours is needed for this degree 6-9 of these units are for the research internship and report. Students have a maximum of 6 years to complete the degree. Students may for, and be admitted to, any of the 4 tracks ( sub-plans ). Each track has its own specific core requirements and electives.
