In addition to the required coursework, students choose electives from a broad range of subjects including various courses in literature and culture, translation, interpretation, and business Japanese. The Master of Arts in Japanese offers two emphases: Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language and Professional Applications of the Language. The curriculum for the teaching emphasis prepares students for a career teaching Japanese at the college level. The Professional Applications emphasis helps students acquire competency in their specific occupational goals in areas such as business, government, arts, interpretation, translation, and other professional fields.

Continuation of JAPN 101. Understanding, speaking, reading, and writing modern Japanese.

JAPN 200 Art of Japanese Writing and Calligraphy (Units: 3).

Nature and composition of the two Japanese writing systems, Hiragana and Kanji (Chinese characters), and their aesthetic expression in different styles of calligraphy. Knowledge of Japanese is not required.(This course is offered as JAPN 200 and MLL 200. Students may not repeat the course under an alternate prefix.).

Intensive study of Kanji. Learn approximately 500 basic Kanji characters. May be repeated for a total of 6 units.

Prerequisites: JAPN 101, JAPN 102, JAPN 103, and JAPN 250 or equivalents. May not be concurrently enrolled in JAPN 510.

The MA in Japanese provides a comprehensive exploration of the language, literature, and culture of Japan.

We offer three paths, preparing students for PhD programs, translation and interpretation, and language teaching or other careers. Kota Takayama boosts interest in Deaf Studies in Japan.

Provided a platform for the group to discuss opportunities for shaping the trajectory of Deaf Studies in Japan.

Takayama says. class at Japan College of Social Work in Tokyo, Japan for five years. In March, he led an online forum focused on the current state of Deaf Studies in Japan which attracted hundreds of participants. Now, there is momentum behind taking action.

And proposed an approach to shaping an academic curriculum for Deaf Studies in Japan.

Their extensive experience and reputations as leading scholars drew a substantial audience, adds Takayama, who notes that there is a growing interest in issues related to Deaf communities in Japan.

A major factor hindering the development of the field in Japan is a lack of academic infrastructure and funding, which is why programs, deaf scholars, and resources are essential, Takayama says. It is also critical to develop effective teaching methods and curriculums for Deaf Studies that can promote a quality education and new opportunities for deaf and hard of hearing people. Plus, he adds, there is an ongoing need for legal frameworks and awareness campaigns to advocate for the rights and inclusion of deaf individuals in all aspects of society, including employment, health care, and legal access.

Takayama is principal investigator on this grant, which is focusing on the development and evaluation of a social work education curriculum and training modules designed for professionals working with deaf and hard of hearing populations in Japan.

All students need to have sufficient knowledge of the subject they will be teaching. Illinois State Board of Education requires a minimum of 48 quarter hours (32 semester hours) in the content area subject. Content courses must be completed before student teaching.

Assesses knowledge of the Japanese language and culture. Test is required before Student Teaching (deadlines apply).

Each student seeking licensure from the College of Education Professional Education Unit must complete supervised field experiences in appropriate settings in conjunction with education courses. The field experiences must include a variety of grade levels, multicultural experiences, and a minimum of 15 hours in special education settings. All field experiences must be completed prior to final approval for student teaching. Field experience hours should be entered by the student into the FEDS system when completing courses with field experience requirements.

Master of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture.

Students must have a BA (or equivalent) from a regionally accredited institution and graduate-level proficiency in Japanese to be eligible.

Students in the Master of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture complete their graduate degree in a year and a half. Students must successfully complete an initial 6-week graduate summer session on the Middlebury, Vermont campus before establishing their candidacy for the MA degree. The second and third semester are completed online during the academic year, followed by a 6-week summer on the Middlebury, Vermont campus and final online semester.

Middlebury awards one unit of graduate credit (equivalent to three semester hours) for each graduate course.

For those who seek K-12 certification at public schools, additional courses may be required.

The DML in Japanese prepares excellent language educators who want to advance the field of teaching and learning Japanese as leading educators and researchers.

Students in the DML program spend the equivalent of three semesters at the School of Japanese or in another approved program (total of 9 units). An additional three courses are taken in the form of independent study over three academic years.

The DML degree in Japanese, launched in 2024, represents a new language pedagogy track in the DML program. Language pedagogy track requirements will differ in some respects from the requirements of the traditional DML in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish.
