Focus your Literature Master of Arts from University of Houston-Clear Lake on studies the literature and culture of the U.S. and the Americas. With the concentration in American Studies, you'll combine the study of the U.S. and, at your choice, other Western Hemisphere literature with coursework in disciplines such as History, Anthropology, Sociology, or Art History, which deepen your understanding of literature relation to the culture in which it is created.

College graduates today can anticipate not one career but several, for which training in Literature makes you highly adaptable. Master students may teach by day in public or private schools before attending graduate seminars in the late afternoons or evenings. Teaching is not the only career option for Literature and other Liberal Arts graduates. Cultural knowledge, critical thinking, and communication skills create opportunities in the worlds of non-profit, government, online, corporate or small businesses. Literature graduates work in publishing, communications, public relations, and job training, sometimes starting at entry-level jobs but then making ourselves indispensable by intelligently and efficiently processing information, solving problems, and communicating results.

The Literature Department will only communicate with students via their UCSD email address, and messages received from non-UCSD email accounts of current students will be returned to the sender.

The UCSD Literature Department uses a listserv (LitMFA-l) for the vast majority of communications with MFA students. This is a mandatory list, which is maintained by the department. Students will be removed from this mailing list when they graduate or withdraw from the program.

The Graduate Lounge houses your mailbox, a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a toaster and a sink. Please help keep these facilities neat and clean--discard your trash, wipe out the sink and microwave after you use them, and retrieve your items from the refrigerator promptly. The graduate staff uses the lounge as a communication center. Please be considerate of your fellow students and do not remove information from the room.

By paying a $10 refundable fee, you may activate your student ID card for use in any copy machine on campus. The activation fee is payable by personal check (UC Regents) or cash. Your signature on a copier service agreement is required. You will be billed monthly for copying charges.

The master of arts in literature brings together literary scholars, theorists, creative writers, and literary translators who share a commitment to transnational and interdisciplinary approaches to literary study and practice.

In addition to seminars in literary studies, students have the opportunity to participate in workshops in creative writing and literary translation, as well in seminars in a wide range of other disciplines, such as film studies, the history of ideas, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts. Students whose primary interest is in creative writing or literary translation have the option to apply to receive graduate certificates in those areas.

At UT Dallas, the study of literature is not divided across departments of English, Spanish, French, German, and East Asian literature instead, the study of literature takes place in a single program that encompasses not only English literature but also the literatures of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The Master of Science in Digital Media program at Georgia Tech (formerly known as Information Design and Technology) offers arts and humanities based advanced study in digital media design and critique. The Wisdom of Literature in a Time of Plague.

: For as long as we have roamed the earth, plagues have bedeviled humanity. And their consequences have been nearly immeasurable. From emotional upheaval to economic hardship, from unwanted illness to untimely death, infections have shattered and molded what it means to be human. Plagues have also shaped our literature. While it is essential that we consult the latest research in infection control and treatment, we are wise to read classic and modern literature for the profound insight it has to offer. Not only will we study and discuss literary reflections on plagues, but importantly we will broadly consider our reaction to times of great trial. For medical students and clinicians navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, to answer these questions is to better prepare ourselves to serve our patients while sustaining ourselves with the deeper reasons behind our work. Over four weeks, readings in great literature (books, essays, and excerpts) will be assigned weekly followed by small group discussion.

INMD 7013: COVID-19 Crisis Innovation Lab A course examining the COVID-19 crisis.

The School of Information Studies, Chicago’s iSchool, has a long and distinguished history in the study of literature and other materials for children and young adults. You’ll work online with recognized experts in the field, supported by the unique presence on campus of the Butler Center for Children’s Literature and its rich collections.

You’ll study the vast variety of formats and genres of youth literature—from board books to graphic novels and beyond—and situate each work in its cultural and historic contexts. You’ll evaluate literature for a variety of ages from the personal, pragmatic and professional perspectives while examining the dynamic relationship between young readers and their texts.

ASIAN 2225 Literature, Politics, and Genocide in Cambodia.

This course is only offered in the Summer Session.

This course will examine various literary, historical, and political responses to the Cambodian genocide, particularly literary testimony by survivors and governmental efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. To pursue these questions, students will read selections from novels and poetry written by Cambodian survivors, along with historical accounts of the genocide and analysis attempts by the Cambodian government and the international community to bring the perpetrators to justice.
