The Master of Arts or Master of Science in Museum Studies graduate degree program at UNM combines graduate level training in museum practices with specific study geared to individual students in fine arts, area studies, natural history, education, anthropology, and other social sciences. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in museum theory, with an emphasis on current standards, best practices, and developments in the museum profession. The degree comprises of a 33-credit-hour multidisciplinary curriculum that includes museology courses as well as electives from affiliated academic fields and culminates in a Master's project or thesis.

The Master of Arts in Museum Studies program has an emphasis on developing universal abilities and professional development competencies across core museum functions. All graduate students must complete the same basic program requirements and, with the help of their advisors, will tailor their coursework and schedule of culminating experiences to one of six area focuses: collections management and registration; museum education and public programming; museum management and fundraising; curatorship; exhibition design; or cultural property law and protection.

The Museum Studies master's program at OU is designed to accommodate working people and can be finished in as little as two years. The comprehensive curriculum covers museum management strategies, financial administration, exhibit and educational programming, and community participation. Students learn how to interact successfully with the public through exhibitions, educational programming, volunteer associations, and other activities.

The Master of Arts in Museum Studies is the only program of its kind in the State of Louisiana.

The program can be completed entirely online or on campus. Students matriculating in the program will undertake a rigorous course of learning in Museology, the branch of knowledge dedicated to the study of the theories, procedures, and managerial concepts of museums: institutions for the acquisition, preservation, study, and exhibition of works of artistic, historical or scientific value.

Practical application of course work is achieved through internships with local, regional and national museums, which serve as extended classrooms. Students will examine options for employment, which will prepare graduates of the program to pursue careers in a variety of local, regional and national museums, campus museums, private galleries, and historical associations.

The Master of Arts in Heritage and Museum Sciences offers a specialization in either museum science or heritage management. The specialization in museum science emphasizes thorough preparation in the broad spectrum of museum theory and practice. Graduates from the museum science specialization of the program have a comprehensive background in museum studies and are prepared as generalists in a number of sub disciplines, including collections management and care exhibitions and interpretation museology museum management and curatorship in anthropology, art, history, paleontology, or the natural sciences.

The heritage management specialization emphasizes extensive investigation in the field of heritage management. Graduates from the heritage management specialization of the program are prepared to enhance local, regional, and national sociological and scientific values encourage preservation and stewardship of cultural and natural heritage advocate public service and direct educational programing designed to derive maximum advantage from innovative technology without the loss of cultural identity and biodiversity. The heritage management specialization is configured to allow students to emphasize areas of special interest such as heritage administration, conservation, interpretation, heritage education, and use (heritage tourism and ecotourism). The specialization offers both theoretical and practical coursework designed to prepare graduates to be leaders in the heritage management field.

Students completing the Museum Studies M.A. curriculum will:.

The KU master’s degree in Museum Studies is a 36-credit-hour program built around 3 fundamental components – Foundational courses and experiences, Conceptual inquiry and application, and Professional specialization and expertise. Students who earn the M.A. in Museum Studies will have acquired mastery of the professional and conceptual dimensions of museums in the broadest sense, while also developing the specialized skills necessary for success in the field.

The graduate curriculum in Museum Studies provides a comprehensive overview of the discipline, opportunities for mastering core components of museum practice, avenues for exploring the interdisciplinary nature of museums, solid grounding in current issues facing museums, and possibilities for research to develop new and innovative approaches in the field. The Museum Studies Program’s core courses provide a foundation in the theories, history, techniques, and problems common to museums, historical agencies, and related institutions as well as the specialized operations of such institutions. Students also receive classroom and field training in methods and subject matter within their chosen professional specialty: Leadership and Management, Interpretation, Collections, and Community Connections. The Museum Studies Program also has well-established connections with academic disciplines such as American Studies, Anthropology, Geology, Art History, History, and Natural History, and students have many opportunities to take courses in those fields. Museum Studies graduates are well-equipped to undertake professional and leadership responsibilities in museums, historical agencies, and related institutions.

They ensure that marginalized voices and histories are heard, function as an economic engine via tourism, and attend to the needs of diverse communities and academic groups, including those that require special accommodations.

The MA in Museum Studies online degree program grounds students in the theory and practical applications of museum operations, including administration, finance, curation, technology, and education. Developed in collaboration with the New-York Historical Society (N-YHS), students gain the knowledge, skills, and preparation necessary to engage in professional museum practice.

From administration and finance to curation and education, the program educates students all areas of a museum, regardless of the focus, content, or audience a specific museum serves.

The first three core courses in the program are supplemented and contextualized by a one-credit (15 hours) practicum per course. Utilizing the rich and varied resources of N-YHS, the residency allows students to gain experience in the practices of curation, collections management, and museum operations. Over the course of the 15 hours, students will observe and document how museum and cultural institutional professionals approach their work and the issues facing museum operations.

Onsite participation is encouraged, but not required. An online option will be provided for those who are unable to attend in person.

Museums support than 726,000 American jobs. Correspondingly, employment of curators archivists is projected to grow 14% and museum technicians 12% during the same timeframe. The need to store information in archives and an increased public interest in science, art, history, and cultural institutions anticipates greater demand for museum professionals.

Graduates of the MA in Museum Studies online degree program are prepared to work as curators, archivists, museum technicians, education administrators, conservators, and operations specialists in museum settings. Graduates may also use their acquired skills to pursue employment in government, higher education, and other educational organizations.

The purpose of the Museum Studies Program is to educate students as to the history of museums, the various aspects of museum work to include administration, collections management, exhibition development, education, community development, tourism, and fund raising. Also, the program strives to acquaint students with the opportunities and problems faced by museums and museum personnel, and to create career opportunities for students who might seek employment in a museum. Emphasis is placed on practicum experiences involving such basic museum functions as exhibition, curatorial research, cataloging, acquisition, community service, education, and administration.

This program offers coursework through the departments of Art, and Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration working in conjunction with museum professionals at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa.

The Master of Arts degree in Museum Studies requires 34 semester hours of coursework including workshops, a portfolio, and a ten-week internship/special project.

The Museum Studies Master of Arts program is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in museums or related cultural institutions. The program utilizes a multidisciplinary approach including both theoretical instruction and practical experience to prepare students for museum careers. In addition to a set of core courses, students specialize in one of three fields of museum work.
