The M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies (MAMES) is an inter-disciplinary program devoted to the study of the Middle East, with an emphasis on the modern period, in fields including history, anthropology, sociology, political science, literature, art history, gender studies, and media studies.
They develop also a special competence in a chosen area of interest, hone their research skills and ability to think critically the region, and are encouraged to articulate their findings at an advanced scholarly and professional level. In addition, students are expected to demonstrate at least an intermediate-level proficiency in a Middle Eastern language of their choice.
The M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies is designed to serve students with diverse interests and needs. Our flexible planning towards graduation serves both full-time and part-time students, with all classes held in the evening to accommodate those with life and career commitments. We are the only public university M.A. Program in Middle Eastern Studies in the New York tri-state area, and as such we have a unique experience, support services, and a tradition of access for students of all social, economic, cultural and national backgrounds. Prior study of the Middle East and or proficiency in a Middle Eastern language is an advantage but is NOT a requirement for admission into the Program.
New York is a center of Middle East-related activity and culture, in which CUNY plays an important part. In addition to the MA Program itself, student experience can be enriched by full access and participation in the events, programs, and resources of the Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC) here at the Graduate Center. We retain close ties with fellow academic institutions and cultural foundations. Our Internship Program offers students opportunities to gain professional skills and connections through positions at leading humanitarian, social service, policy, and arts organizations in and around New York City. Students may also take up to six credits at other accredited academic institutions, including those in the Middle East. Students have found the latter particularly useful for language study, and the Program has some resources to support this.
Some twenty percent of our graduates proceed to doctoral or other further study. Others develop in their existing chosen professional spheres or use their degree to facilitate new career paths in areas including education, media, library and archives, the law, government service, policy administration, human rights, NGO work, economic development, immigrant advocacy, translation interpretation, and the arts. Recent alumni have found employment in federal, state, and city agencies and in non-governmental organizations in the United States, as well as world-wide, especially in the Middle East.
Like CUNY and New York City itself, the MA Program in Middle Eastern Studies values and respects diversity of thought, identity, experience, and interests.

The program combines advanced policy studies with interdisciplinary area studies, responding to an increased need in both public and private sectors for policy specialists with a thorough understanding of Middle East politics and cultures.
The dual degree program is structured so that students can earn both master degrees simultaneously in two and a half academic years. Some students, particularly those who enter the program with a language deficiency, may find it necessary to enroll for an additional semester or summer session in order to complete all the requirements of the program. Degrees are awarded when the required course work in both areas is completed.
Students must complete a minimum of 36 semester hours in public affairs and 30 semester hours in Middle Eastern studies, plus a master professional report and summer internship. Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies: Classics, M.A.
This is a named option within the Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies M.A.
Soon after the founding of the University of Wisconsin in 1848, the department was created as one of the first academic units at the university. The Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies (CANES) has enjoyed a long tradition of excellence in philological scholarship, literary criticism, archaeology, and ancient history. At the graduate level, the department offers the master of arts and doctor of philosophy in classical and ancient near eastern studies. Students may follow one of two courses of study, classical languages and literatures, or Hebrew bible.
The primary goal of the program is to familiarize students with the core linguistic, historical, andphilological aspects of classical and ancient near eastern studies. Students also learn to conduct original research in such varied areas as gender studies, literary theory, translation studies, and classical reception under the guidance of established scholars in these areas.
Additional work may be done in allied fields such as archaeology, art history, linguistics, comparative literature, history, philosophy, and political science.
A wide range of professional networks provides graduate students with enhanced opportunities for education and career development.
The Pillinger Library and Mansoor Reading Room, both located within the department, provide convenient access to a large number of texts, while the larger Greek and Latin Reading Room in the Memorial Library contains an extensive, noncirculating research collection of texts and commentaries. The Memorial Library maintains an excellent research collection of books and periodicals in classics and Hebrew bible, with many of its resources available online.

It should be remembered that teaching funds are variable, depending on budget and class enrollments. All students are encouraged to pursue opportunities for support outside the department at all stages of their study.

All CANES appointments are 50% which corresponds to the total expected hours of work throughout the course of the semester. Each TA will receive a breakdown of expected workload with their official appointment letter.
Eligibility Guidelines: The CANES department can provide some funding for Classics students who are presenting a paper addressing a topic in the classics field or interviewing for hire. Applicable conferences include the SCS, AIA, and CAMWS, but other conferences such as graduate student colloquia will also be considered. First time recipients of this award may be asked to present a departmental Pillinger Talk in preparation for their conference presentation.
All applications for department travel must be supported by satisfactory progress in the student program. Graduate students may submit one request for travel support to the department per academic year. Every attempt will be made to fund student travel up to a maximum of $750. Students should recognize that funding is based on availability. The Fellowships Committee will assess the validity of all applications and determine the amount of each individual award if granted.
Evidence of awards applied for and or received should accompany all requests for department travel funding. Being competitive for awards outside the department is a matter of professional development.
Application: Having applied for travel awards and supplements from external sources, students should then petition the CANES department for travel support. All petitions are considered on a case by case basis and evaluated on the basis of academic merit and satisfactory progress in the graduate program.
Awards from other sources will not necessarily disqualify students from classics department funding. The applications will be read and voted on by the committee which will attempt to respond to requests in a timely fashion.
