The Orthodontics program prepares dental graduates to manage the full range of dentofacial discrepancies which fall within the responsibility of the orthodontist. Current knowledge and research findings are applied to patient care in all age groups. A thesis is required. The degree awarded is a Master of Science, with orthodontics as the area of specialization. The master thesis, based on original research, may focus on a number of topics in growth and development, as well as function of the stomatognathic system. Other areas for study include factors related to balance or imbalance of dental occlusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, materials relevant to orthodontic practice, biologic tissue response, and physical or social adjustment of patients.

The M.S.D. program starts the first week of July each year students may not enter the program in the spring semester. If you are an international student, you must arrive on campus at the end of May to complete the English for Academic Purposes placement test.

The program clinical experience consists of a wide variety of orthodontic patients, including complex cases requiring orthognathic surgery and patients with facial clefts and other craniofacial abnormalities. An original research experience is an integral part of our program with each project intended to produce results suitable for publication in a nationally circulated orthodontic journal. 2 Postdoctoral Application Support Service Program (PASS).

The Orthodontics Residency Program at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry participates in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service Program (PASS).

Once your application and supporting materials are processed in PASS and received by the School, they will be reviewed by the Endodontics Graduate Program Selection Committee.

All applicants receiving an interview are required to submit a West Virginia University Graduate Program Application along with the $60 application fee. Information regarding the steps for submission will be sent in the interview invitation email.

Applicants approved for admission to the program will be notified through MATCH and an official acceptance letter from the School of Dentistry.

All residents must consent to a criminal background check by the most recent technology available prior to final acceptance. The resident may not begin their training program beyond the orientation phase until the criminal background check has been submitted.

After achieving a dental degree, dentists may wish to specialize in Orthodontics by enrolling as a resident in an accredited Orthodontic Program.

Opportunities are available for research and independent study in the department, and there are special facilities for research in biomechanics and craniofacial growth.

The Master of Science program in orthodontics requires a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate credit. Residents must satisfactorily complete a thesis based on a hypothesis-driven original research project to qualify for an M.S. in addition to the Certificate in Orthodontics.

BS MS Dual Degree Clinical Dental Hygiene Leader Track.

The Orthodontic program at the University of Maryland provides its residents with a sound didactic background in craniofacial biology and growth and development. Residents are exposed to many different Orthodontic techniques and appliances. Since the postdoctoral clinic is situated in the University of Maryland School of Dentistry on the campus of the Health Sciences Center of the University of Maryland, residents have a chance to work in conjunction with other dental and medical specialists. Residents are introduced to a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes TMD diagnosis and treatment, surgical-orthodontic treatment, and pre and post-restorative treatment, including implant restorations. All residents must conduct an original research project during their three years in the program.

The mission of the MSD Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct an ethical, patient-centered, evidence-based practice in the specialty of orthodontics. The MSD curriculum is structured for a balanced work load to allow time for each postgraduate student to broaden their clinical and didactic experiences as well as provide opportunities to gain additional experiences in areas of special interest. Postgraduate students who complete the 34-month program are expected to have developed their skills and knowledge to the level of a specialist in orthodontics as approved by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation. This implies the student will have had considerable didactic background and direct experiences with patients exhibiting a variety of malocclusion presentations. Critical topics to the specialty of orthodontics will be covered in departmental based seminars (e.g. Craniofacial Growth Development, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Space Supervision, Cephalometrics, Edgewise Appliances Design, Biomechanics, Dentofacial Orthopedics). Seminar topics will be supported by literature reviews and case analysis treatment planning sessions that are reinforced through clinical experiences. Recognition of malocclusion parameters, hereditary conditions and orofacial patterns will be expected by completion of the program with knowledge of physical and emotional development essential to successful outcomes. Utilizing diagnostic training, the graduate should be able to prepare and present a treatment plan that is comprehensive and efficiently sequenced. Clinical expertise will be attained in management of the primary and mixed dentitions (space supervision, interceptive procedures, growth modification, multi­ phase early treatment), the young permanent dentition (comprehensive non-extraction and extraction protocols} and adult patients (orthognathic surgery, coordinated restorative prosthetic management). The MSD program curriculum and experiences are further designed to prepare graduates not only for successful entry into the contemporary practice of orthodontics but to provide a scientific foundation for future growth in the field. In addition to clinical expertise, the graduate should have superior abilities in interpreting new evidenced-based procedures and concepts available to the profession and public. An evidenced-based understanding of the specialties knowledge base will be emphasized in seminar discussions, the clinical environment, through the core curriculum of the MSD program, and in research experiences. The post-graduate program in orthodontics at the University of Connecticut was established in 1971. Since its inception, it has made landmark contributions to the field of orthodontics. The Division has always been on the cusp of leading research in bone and muscle biology, craniofacial orthopedics, and clinical orthodontics. The Division has led the field in the application of biomechanics and the development of innovative orthodontic materials and appliances.

The didactic program will include lectures, seminars, and interdisciplinary patient conferences. The clinical program will emphasize diagnosis, treatment plan, and mechanics plan of patients with various malocclusions. They will have access to all our clinical facilities.

Research will also be an integral part of the program by providing an opportunity to work on various clinical and basic science research programs currently underway in our division.

The Division of Orthodontics works very closely with other divisions within the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. This will provide a very broad exposure to interdisciplinary care for orthodontics patients.

There are two separate categories within the fellowship program:.

The clinical program will involve hands-on demonstrations, as in treatment of patients, with emphasis on diagnosis, treatment planning, and the biomechanics involved with various malocclusions. For fellows interested accepted in the Clinical Track, a minimum of 50% time will be devoted to research.

Fellows will develop and participate in clinical and basic science projects in the Division of Orthodontics. The fellows will learn execute clinical research from writing a research protocol to the execution of the project. All participants must be a graduate of an accredited orthodontic program of their country (D.D.S. D.M.D. or its equivalent).

The fellowship program has a July 1 start date. However, applications are accepted throughout the year.

The proposed Orthodontic Fellowship Program will be an intensive full-time, one-year program for orthodontists graduating from a CODA (Commission on Dental Accreditation) accredited orthodontic program who want to enhance their knowledge and skills in the field of orthodontists and dentofacial orthopedics.

There is a cost to attend the program depending on which you are eligible for. A non-refundable deposit is required payable within 20 days of acceptance in to the program. The applicant fellow will not receive any monetary assistance from the University of Connecticut. No funds, scholarships, loans or grants are available for the fellowship program.

The program will consist of academic didactic, clinical patient care and research components.

The Fellow will be involved in the didactic curriculum of resident education. Emphasis of the didactic program will be on providing a strong foundation in areas of biomechanics, growth and development, biology of tooth movement, cephalometrics, clinical methodology based on evidence-based knowledge, advanced treatment planning related to orthodontic treatments, and related basic research methodology. One to two days a week will be dedicated to this component.

This component will facilitate development of expertise in management of complex orthodontic patients (especially in decision-making and prioritization of treatment sequencing when the patient has multiple issues). Special focus will be placed on mechanics-based treatment approaches. There will be opportunities to master newer innovations and techniques in orthodontics that include skeletal anchorage, 3D treatment planning with CBCT technology, advanced biomechanics and orthognathic surgery. Fellows will be authorized (i.e., have privileges) to guide, educate and advise residents on various aspects of treatment.

This component intent is to expose the fellow to a spectrum of basic science and clinical research programs currently in progress in the Division of Orthodontics. The fellow will be provided sufficient opportunity to work on a project of interest either in basic science or clinical research. One to two days a week will be dedicated to the research component.

Applicants must be graduates of a CODA accredited residency program in orthodontics.

Three letters of recommendation from the applicant residency program.
