The general requirements for admission to the Ph. D. Programs at University of Virginia-Main Campus include a bachelor degree from an accredited college or university, GRE General Test scores, a completed application packet with short essay and letters of recommendation. TOEFL scores are required for international students whose first language is not English.
You may find it helpful to know that a typical entering class of graduate students has average GRE scores over 159 and 160 and an average GPA above 3.5 on a 4-point scale. If a student is seriously considering pursuing a Ph.D., the GRE should be taken during the senior year. Bioengineering Admissions Guidelines
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
1. Bachelor’s degree of Science (B. S.) or a Master of Science (M.S.) in engineering or science and at least two of the following:
(a)An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00.
(b)A GPA of at least 3.00 for the last two semesters of undergraduate study.
(c)GPA of at least 3.00 in a minimum of 12 hours of graduate work at other institutions.
2. Minimum course requirements include:
(a)2 years of calculus, through differential equations.
(b)One year of physics.
(c)Sufficient background in biology (to be determined by the admissions committee) to serve as pre-requisite for required graduate course in Advanced Biology.
3. GRE (Graduate Record Examination) Official scores are required. Scores at or above the 75th percentile on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) in the Quantitative and Analytical areas. We do not require the GRE subject test.
4. The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Test System) is required for all applicants whose native language is not English. If the applicant received a degree in the United States within the past two years, this test is waived. Both the TOEFL and the IELTS are only valid for two years from the date the test was taken.
(a)Individual "skill section score" recommendations for Lehigh University and the iBT (Internet based TOEFL) are: Writing - 20; Speaking - 20; Reading - 20; Listening - 15 (Composite score = 79).

Graduate Degrees in Biomedical Engineering
Students who complete their BS degree in BME at UW-Madison, with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 or a GPA of 3.25 for the final 60 credits, are eligible to for the MS degree and can complete it in only 24-credits, which is intended primarily for students not planning to pursue a PhD.

Graduate Record Exam or Medical College Admission Test
Typically, graduate students admitted into BME have GPAs greater than 3.5.
There are no specific minimum requirements, but generally our students score in the top 75%tile or greater for the analytical and quantitative or physical sciences portions of the exams.
The BME department expects international students to report a TOEFL score. A TOEFL score of 625 or greater is required to be considered for admission to the graduate program.

The Biomedical Engineering Department has no deadline for but generally awards funding to applications who for Fall admission.
The later you the lower your chances are for admission and to obtain funding. Complete applications including ALL supportive documentation (GRE, TOEFL information, etc. ) must be received by the deadline date for evaluation for admission.

The Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering offers admission for both fall and spring semesters with spring admissions being limited based on current research opportunities and research assistantship availability.
