The final degree objective for all students in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences Graduate Program is the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy). Regardless of undergraduate major, applicants must have an outstanding academic record, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. Relevant research experience is also highly desirable. Students who were unable to obtain research experience at their undergraduate institution often work in research during summers or after graduation. We receive over 400 applications each year, and we typically enroll 15-20 new students. The Department cannot estimate chances for admission based on any one or two qualifications.

Applications to the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences Graduate Program must be completed online.
The application, unofficial transcripts test scores, and letters of recommendation must be submitted by December 1 for admission the following September. Items received after the deadline will be added to your file. The Graduate Admissions Committee begins reviewing applications shortly after the deadline, so materials received late may not be reviewed.
We require one copy of transcript(s) from each university attended. Original, official transcripts are not required until after a student has been admitted.
All applicants are required to take the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections of the GRE. The subject test section is not required.
Applicants whose first language is not English must present evidence of their ability to conduct studies in English by taking the IELTS (preferred) or TOEFL exam.

The Brain Cognitive Sciences provides an interdisciplinary view of modern research into how the human brain solves the problems involved in perception, including how we perceive the three-dimensional structure of the world, how we recognize objects and how visual information is used to control action in the world. Students read contemporary research and, through classroom discussion and critical essays, explore and analyze the questions and debates that define contemporary perceptual science. This course considers how we comprehend the auditory environment.

The Department of Cognitive Science at Case Western Reserve University is specifically dedicated to the study of human higher cognition, including language, gesture, advanced social cognition, mathematical invention, scientific discovery, art, religion, morality, music, literature, advanced tool use and advanced technology, theater and dance, fashions of dress, sign systems, creativity, and culture. The department draws on methods of research in the biological sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. Its educational mission is to provide students with the best possible opportunity to integrate a wide variety of approaches and apply them to the study of human higher cognition.
Admission Details
Case Western Reserve University has standard criteria for all applicants to graduate programs. Applicants will be expected to have a background in one of the areas that contributes to cognitive linguistics, but that background is judged case-by-case.
Undergraduates pursuing a B.A. in any major in the university are eligible to pursue the M.A. in Cognitive Linguistics during their final year of study.
Students interested in non-degree enrollment should consult the School of Graduate Studies webpage for Non-Degree Students. In order to consider each applicant’s case fully and fairly we prefer to receive a completed application by 1 May for admission in the fall of that year.
