College description: A fundamental problem in biology is how the complex set of multicellular structures that characterize an adult animal is generated from the fertilized egg. These advances represent the beginning of a major movement in the biological sciences toward the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying developmental decisions and the resulting morphogenetic processes. This new thrust in developmental biology derives from the extraordinary methodological advances of the past decade in molecular genetics, immunology, and biochemistry. However, it also derives from groundwork laid by the classical developmental studies, the rapid advances in cell biology and animal virology, and from models borrowed from prokaryotic systems. The Developmental Biology includes a critical mass of scientists who are leading the thrust in developmental biology and who can train new leaders in the attack on the fundamental problems of development. The discipline of developmental biology draws on biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and genomics. People in the department have a major interest in regenerative medicine and stem cell biology.University requirements for the M.S. are described in the Graduate Degrees section of this bulletin.Students in the Ph.D. program in Developmental Biology may for an M.S. degree, assuming completion of their course requirements and preparation of a written proposal.
GRE Subject Test in Biology optional.

For full-time students, the degree requirements can be completed within a calendar year. The university look at each of their GRE scores separately. The usefulness of GREs is in their universality unlike GPAs and letters of recommendation, the GRE is one commonality between all of the university applicants. MCAT scores are accepted but less desirable than GRE.The three letters of recommendation should provide input from people in responsible positions who can comment on their academic, employment, or volunteer performance, character, and interests. Letters from people who really know applicant, rather than just from people who have impressive titles, are the most valuable. In addition, admission decisions will be based on the total package of GPA, GRE scores, research or other relevant experience, the statement of purpose and the personal statement and letters of recommendation.

Cellular and Molecular Biosciences Gateway Ph.D. Program
College description: Campus Degree List and Associated Areas of Study.Research programs of the Developmental and Cell Biology focus on molecular aspects of the development of eukaryotic organisms, on the molecular interaction of cells in tissue differentiation, and expression and function of genes related to the biogenesis of organelles and cellular constituents. The Developmental and Cell Biology major is intended to provide students with intensive training in cutting edge approaches to understanding the structure and function of cells and how they interact to produce a complex organism, starting with a fertilized egg. The focus of the B.S. in Developmental and Cell Biology is to provide students with intensive training aimed at preparing them for graduate programs in modern Developmental and Cell Biology or other biomedical sciences. In-depth training in the molecular basis of cell and developmental biology will be coupled with integrating knowledge obtained from the recent explosive advances in genomic technology to provide a strong working understanding of approach problems in basic research. The first is a reduction in the number of required courses, allowing students the opportunity to focus deeply on training in Developmental and Cell Biology. The second is the implementation of a new course in Genomic and Proteomic analysis that is closely tied to problems in genetics, developmental, and cell biology.Requirements for the B.S. in Developmental and Cell Biology.Application Process to Declare the Major: The major in Developmental and Cell Biology is open to junior and senior-level students only. With the sequencing of the human genome, it is important than ever for biology students to have a broad background in the study of heredity and evolution.
