Applied Physics, M.S.
A bachelor’s degree with good academic standing in physics, applied physics or a closely-related discipline from an accredited college or university is required for admission to the applied physics graduate program. Applicants with degrees from fields other than physics or applied physics may be admitted, but must fulfill certain prerequisite courses before being considered for acceptance. Courses specified for this purpose cannot count toward credits needed for the master’s degree. Letters of recommendation, GRE and TOEFL scores and application letters will also be considered in the admissions process. These individuals will help applicant excel in positions suited for those with a background in physics, including the emerging fields of health, green technology, energy conservation and nanotechnology research.Students are required to take 6 credits of basic core courses with the balance of the necessary credits earned in elective courses. No comprehensive examination is required for the master’s degree in applied physics. A student must hold a B 3.0 GPA at the time of graduation.A written project proposal and final report must be submitted to the department chair and the advisor, and may be extended to a thesis with the project advisor recommendation.
Physics and Engineering Physics
College description: At least 48 credits of graduate courses must be completed.Elective courses : The remaining 18 credits should be graduate level physics electives, or graduate level courses in a related field with approval of the research supervisor and graduate program advisor. One of the electives must be a computational coursePer the SSE Handbook: A course in which a grade of C or less is earned cannot be counted toward a graduate degree. If a student receives one B grade, the student is immediately considered for probation by the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in consultation with the appropriate department program.A student who does not maintain the minimum 3.0 GPA in graduate course work will be subject to disenrollment. The Ph.D. qualifying exam is a 6-hour written examination covering classical and modern physics, given by the department once per semester. The qualifying exam must be attempted no later than the fourth semester of graduate study. Students who are sufficiently prepared may take it during the first year with approval of the research supervisor. Students may attempt the qualifying exam up to three times. Any student who has not passed the qualifying exam by the end of the fifth semester of graduate study will be disenrolled from the program.Students who have met course requirements and have passed the qualifying exam become degree candidates. It must be reviewed and approved by the committee before the end of the sixth semester of graduate study. The oral defense must be attempted following approval of the written proposal, no later than the sixth semester of graduate study.Students who are sufficiently prepared are strongly encouraged to take the prospectus defense before the end of the 4th semester of graduate study. The final requirement for the Ph.D. degree is a written dissertation based on original research, approved by the committee, and its defense in an oral exam by the committee. The master degree is not a requirement for the Ph.D. in physics.
The university normally only accept graduate students who intend to pursue the Ph.D. degree. The GRE general exam is required for all applicants. The GRE Physics subject exam is strongly recommended, but not required, for applicants to the Physics Ph.D. Program. The TOEFL exam is required for all applicants who are non-native English speakers.Tulane University of Louisiana has no minimum required GRE scores. The Tulane University of Louisiana does have a minimum TOEFL score of 80. The test scores are used, along with other indicators such as GPA and recommendation letters, to make relative comparisons of applicants. The university can accept unofficial TOEFL and GRE scores, such as photocopies of ETS score reports, at the time of their application.
