Should questions arise that are not addressed in the handbook, students should consult their academic adviser, the Chair of the Theory Department, or the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies in that order.Graduate Research Curricula PhD Major in Music Theory.The financial arrangements for these graduate awards are handled by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and vary from student to student. The awards fellowships are generally available for the normal degree program duration. Students are normally notified of the nature and tuition stipend of their assistantship by early May. Students with graduate awards are required to register for at least 9 hours of course work per semester.TA’s may be required to come early for the Fall Semester for a training session. It is strongly recommended that incoming students take th521 in the first semester if there is no previous teaching experience.Graduate students from all departments are eligible in this University-wide competition Eastman theory students have received this prize in past years.THEORY SYMPOSIA AND THE ANNUAL LECTURE SERIES Graduate theory students plan and present a series of bi-weekly symposia throughout the year.The Graduate Student Association and or the Professional Development Committee may reimburse a certain percentage of the costs incurred to attend conferences.

Applicants to the MA must submit GRE scores.Admission to the MA degree program does not involve an audition on an applied instrument or voice, with the exception of the MA in Music Leadership.If the evaluation indicates remedial courses are necessary, students must successfully complete them during the first semester in which they are offered. Credits for review courses are not counted toward the degree requirements.Requirements for the MA degree are expected to be completed within five years after the work is begun, but is typically completed within two years of full-time study. The basic residency requirement for the degree is one year of full-time study or its equivalent, two years for musicology majors.Eastman’s Master of Arts in Music Leadership Degree will prepare the next generation of musical leaders to recognize and capitalize on new organizational modes and behaviors in the quickly evolving marketplace of the musical arts, while building a foundation of business leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will serve and enhance the profession. A combination of intense classroom study and unparalleled hands-on experience with leading musical arts organizations forms the backbone of this degree program.This major is intended either for those students who wish to focus on a teaching career in music theory , or for other graduate students who may wish to complete a dual degree program in performance and music theory.
