The Graduate Summer Institute offers short, intensive courses in epidemiology and biostatistics intended to develop an understanding of the principles, methodologic strategies and practical aspects of epidemiological research.

The mission of the Epidemiology Concentration is to prepare students for professions aimed at reducing disease burden and disparities through a strong background in epidemiology methods.

Epidemiology Concentration Specific Competencies write an original research paper based on an epidemiologic research question formulated to help fill the gaps in a given substantive area; evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of study designs commonly used in epidemiologic research for answering epidemiologic research questions; use causal diagrams to identify threats to study validity and approaches to minimize such threats;develop and implement the most appropriate analysis plan to analyze data to answer a specific epidemiologic research question; evaluate scientific evidence regarding a specific epidemiologic research question; justify the design and analysis for their own epidemiologic study; write and present the findings and implications of their own epidemiologic study; and select the most appropriate epidemiologic study design that can be used to answer a specific epidemiologic research question.

The Columbia MPH program in Epidemiology prepares students for careers in public health by providing the skills needed to conduct research into the causes, prevention, and control of human disease. The curriculum emphasizes mastery of methods of epidemiological research and is enriched by courses on important disease outcomes, such as AIDS, tuberculosis, and cancer, and factors important in disease causation, such as genetics, nutrition, and the environment.

Upon satisfactory completion of an MPH degree, students are able to discuss the role of epidemiology within the broader field of public health and identify its relationship medicine, social and behavioral sciences, environmental science, and health policy. Graduates can explain and analyze the distribution and determinants of both chronic and infectious diseases in different populations, apply principles of disease prevention within populations, discuss contemporary issues in epidemiological research in at least three substantive areas (e.g., diseases, other health outcomes, exposures) and identify potential ethical problems in research studies, evaluate alternative approaches to solving ethical dilemmas, and apply the principles underlying ethical treatment of human subjects in research.

The Department has active research programs in cancer, molecular genetic, environmental and occupational epidemiology, neurodegeneration and aging-related diseases, diabetes, infectious diseases and research methodology. The Global Bio Lab, with its capacity to respond to the world’s deadliest biological threats, also offers cutting-edge training.

Epidemiology focuses on the health problems in population groups. The scope of this exciting field ranges from the study of the causes of disease to the control of prevention of disease and the distribution of health resources. Epidemiologists study the variation of disease in relation to age, sex, race, occupational and social characteristics, place of residence, susceptibility, exposure to specific agents or other relevant factors. The MS in Epidemiology is perfect for students intending to pursue a research career, as the MS is a research-oriented degree within the general field of epidemiology. It includes coursework in areas such as epidemiologic methods, biostatistics, data management, chronic diseases epidemiology, and global and infectious diseases epidemiology. In addition to coursework, the program includes either the preparation of a thesis, or a comprehensive examination and MS report.

The MS in Epidemiology requires 38 units of required core courses and 18 units of elective courses.

In addition, the student must complete at least 18 units of electives in Epidemiology selected from the following areas:.

The Chair of the committee and at least one other member must hold academic appointments in the Epidemiology. The committee approves the thesis prospectus before the student files for advancement to candidacy. The thesis must be acceptable to the thesis committee.

A comprehensive examination on the major area of study must be passed. If failed, the examination may be repeated once. In addition, the student must complete a research report which is approved by the guidance committee.

Students in the MS program should take Epidemiology 200A and Biostatistics 100A in their first quarter, Epidemiology 200B and Biostatistics 100B in their second quarter, and Epidemiology 200C in their third quarter. They may also take additional courses in each of those quarters or substitute Biostatistics 100A-B with appropriate higher level courses.

Students who plan to take their epidemiology first year core courses (Epi 200A, Epi 200B and Epi 200C) in a different sequence must have approval from their advisors.

The MS degree is normally obtained after 2 years of full-time study (six academic quarters).

Epidemiology is the scientific discipline primarily concerned with identifying the distribution and causes of disease in populations. It encompasses a rich methodology including observational and experimental study designs, statistical methods, an understanding of pathogens, environmental and behavioral risk factors, and human biology. Epidemiological methods have evolved to meet threats of global infectious diseases and the complex health challenges presented by an aging population, as well as to capitalize on the expanding understanding of human genetics. As the fundamental discipline of public health, epidemiology provides essential knowledge to design, implement, and assess approaches to effectively prevent disease and improve quality of life in the population.

The research-oriented degree programs are designed to provide rigorous training to develop students' abilities to synthesize knowledge and skills needed to address today health-related problems.

The department offers two graduate degree programs: an M.S. and a Ph.D. in epidemiology and an M.S. and Ph.D. in population health. While the program is based on a sequence of core courses, students, in consultation with their major professor, have some flexibility to design advanced study and research that best prepares them for their chosen area of interest.

Graduate admissions is a two-step process between academic degree programs and the Graduate School. Applicants must meet requirements of both the program(s) and the Graduate School. Once you have researched the graduate program(s) you are interested in, .

For applicants who have completed a doctoral degree, GRE scores are preferred, but we will accept scores from the entrance exam required for the doctoral degree (e.g., MCAT, LSAT).

Applicants must have an degree with a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), although successful applicants generally have GPAs above 3.0.

GRE scores are required for admission. The scores must be no than five years old at the time of application. For applicants who have completed a doctoral degree, GRE scores are preferred but the program will accept scores for the entrance exam required for the doctoral degree (e.g., MCAT, LSAT). Students should contact the graduate program coordinator to find out if their scores are competitive.

Applicants whose native language or language of study is not English must submit official TOEFL scores. Scores must be no than five years old at the start of the semester for which an applicant is applying. Further details are available on the Graduate School website. Note that the minimum test scores for the program are higher than those required by the Graduate School. For the Test of English as a Foreign Language, TOEFL, minimum scores of 580 (written), 237 (computer-based), or 92 (Internet-based) or above are required.

Transcripts must show evidence of quantitative preparation, including at least one semester of calculus as well as a two-semester courses in college-level biology. A personal statement and three letters of recommendation are required. Applicants must meet both the above departmental admission requirements and the Graduate School admission requirements.

Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 in all graduate work (including transfer credits) unless conditions for probationary status require higher grades. No grade of BC or lower in epidemiology required courses will be accepted for the degree.

Thesis required. Approval of a written proposal for thesis research is required before beginning thesis. M.S. candidates must submit master’s thesis to advisor within two years of completing all coursework.

Master’s degree students who have been absent for five or consecutive years lose all credits that they have earned before their absence.

Appreciation of the concepts used to prevent environmental conditions that may threaten health. Topics include air pollution, water management, waste management, radiation protection, food hygiene, occupational health and disaster management.

CHLH 572: Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health.

Application of epidemiologic methods to public health, including descriptive epidemiology, analytic study designs (case-control and cohort studies and randomized trials). Examples of applications focus on public health issues in chronic disease and infectious disease prevention and control.

Application of statistical methods to epidemiology, clinical and diagnostic medicine, and laboratory biomedical experiments. Topics include descriptive statistics and graphics, reliability, sample size estimation, contingency table analysis, analysis of group differences, survival analysis, correlation and linear regression. Emphasizes use of computerized statistical software in biomedical data analysis.

BS MPH Environmental Occupational Health Program.

Epidemiology is a fundamental science of public health with a major focus on health problems in communities, groups or aggregates of people. It is the scientific discipline concerned with the causes and prevention of human disease. It has been designed for students whose careers will focus on conducting investigator-initiated and collaborative epidemiologic research.

The MPH in Epidemiology provides students with systematic training in epidemiological principles, methods, and practices through constructive coursework and an internship.

The Online MPH in Applied Epidemiology is designed for working professionals. Coursework is 100% online and students complete one course every seven and a half weeks.

The MS in Epidemiology is designed for individuals who wish to pursue training in epidemiological research.

Graduates of the MS in Epidemiology have a solid understanding of epidemiologic principles and methods, and the demonstrated ability and capacity to that understanding and skill to solve complex health problems.

The curriculum and project requirements are designed to provide, and then to demonstrate, the ability to effectively engage in and report research. This includes the development of appropriate research questions and aims, the design and conduct of epidemiologic studies, and the appropriate analysis, interpretation and presentation of research data. Upon graduation, MS students will have attained competencies in two areas: general epidemiology knowledge and skills, and epidemiologic research methods. MS students will be prepared to work in applied epidemiologic and health research field, or pursue doctoral training in Epidemiology.

The Department has a robust research portfolio focusing on a range of areas including social inequalities in health, neighborhood differences in health, chronic and infectious disease epidemiology, lifecourse epidemiology, aging, nutrition, physical activity and obesity, clinical research, analytical methods for longitudinal and spatial data, and complex systems approaches to population health. This research activity provides and enhances the training opportunities and educational environment for the MS in Epidemiology students.

Applicants to the MS Epidemiology program must possess a baccalaureate degree, two semesters of college math and at least one course of college biologic science (e.g. biology, microbiology, physiology, genetics).

The 45 total credit hour requirement is distributed as 27 credits in Year 1 and 18 credits in Year 2. There are 24 credits of required courses, 15 credits of electives and 6 additional credits for the masters research project.
