GRE scores
GRE Only the general GRE test is required. The Stanford University does not have a minimum GRE score requirement, and the Stanford University does not track average scores for admitted applicants.
Fall 2021 application exception: Due to the hardships involved with test taking under the current circumstances, GRE scores will not be considered for Fall 2021.

The application consists of five parts: The biographical section, 3 letters of recommendation, GRE general test scores, Subjects Taken form with grades, and a Statement of Objectives.

For the Earth System Science Graduate Program
Beginning September 1st students can submit an application through UCI Graduate Division including GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and an English proficiency test for international students.
The ESS Ph.D. program does not have a minimum GRE score.
These factors include but are not limited to research experience, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and academic record. GRE scores and GPA are only two components of the review process and cannot solely be used to determine a student’s academic aptitude or likelihood of admission in to a Ph.D. program. Currently, the average GRE score for an admitted student is Verbal: 155, Quantitative: 160, and Analytical: 4 and the average GPA for an admitted student is 3.41 on a 4.00 grade scale.

In addition, scores for the aptitude test of the Graduate Record Examination are required for admission to graduate work in geology, as well as completion of at least one year each of study in college-level calculus, chemistry, and physics.

These changes include discontinuing the GRE requirement and implementing a two-stage application process in hopes of reducing barriers faced by underrepresented student groups.
Applicants are no longer required to submit GRE scores to be eligible for the university graduate programs. The university rationale is evidence-based GRE scores are correlated to socioeconomic status, gender, and ethnicity and do not predict graduate student success. The logistics and financial expense of taking the GRE are burdensome as well, further preventing high quality students from seeking graduate degrees.
