The John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage, home of the M.A. program in public humanities, sponsors many workshops, lecturers, and visitors. Students undertake two practicums (one credited; one uncredited but required) gaining professional experience and the opportunity to reflect on the theory and practice of the field. In recent years, students have found placements at museums, universities, state, city and federal agencies, and archives and libraries.

The program draws on Brown's Open Curriculum and the wide-ranging resources of Providence's arts and cultural community to connect students to academic and hands-on learning experiences. Students in the public humanities program are encouraged to take courses in departments across the University and at the Rhode Island School of Design. Students are also able to cross-register for classes at Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The M.A. program in public humanities participates in City Year's University Partnership. City Year corps members, alumni and current/former staff who are accepted to the public humanities M.A. program are eligible for financial assistance, including a waiver that covers their application.

It is a round-up of various organizations and offices around campus who offer opportunities and support to Humanities graduate students.

Drawing on this rich and longstanding tradition of intellectual inquiry, the Center for African and African American Studies offers a University Graduate Certificate in African and African American Studies designed to productively situate emerging scholars and their work within an intellectual enterprise that will connect both to robust national and international conversations and scholarly developments.

The certificate is open to PhD students and provides them with opportunities to think through key issues and themes within African and African American Studies in ways that will strengthen their scholarly work, widen their intellectual community, and expand the reach and consequence of their graduate study.

For graduate students with a language requirement in their program, CLIC offers courses in 10 languages.

The CSWGS graduate certificate program provides Ph.D. students across the university formal certification in the study of women, gender, and sexuality.

Certificate students are eligible to compete for CSWGS travel funds, teaching assistantships, teaching fellowships, and dissertation completion fellowships.

As a part of these efforts, CTE recently established an accredited certificate program in pedagogy. Once completed, this Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning (GCTL) will appear on students' transcripts, providing a valuable credential to add to their CVs. The GCTL provides participants with a combination of formal pedagogical training, practical experience, and mentoring that will prepare them to be effective college teachers.

This involves supporting scholarly work, facilitating research between the School of Humanities and other areas of Rice University, as well as leading institutional change by partnering with other foundations, centers, research institutions, and universities. Independent initiatives are also taken by the HRC in order to incubate ideas and detect disciplinary changes that shape the future of the university.

The PWC provides graduate students with workshops tailored to their academic goals and a curated list of online communication resources. Graduate students can also schedule one-on-one consultations to help them succeed in written, oral, and visual assignments.

The Center for Academic and Professional Communication (CAPC) provides tools to help students communicate at the graduate level. Some of the programs and services they offer include: dissertation camps workshops writing groups fellowship coaching and communication courses (for international graduate students).

The Certificate in Urban Humanities provides an academic structure for the study of urban life and urban form using methods from the environmental design disciplines, the arts and humanities, and the interpretive social sciences. The Urban Humanities are an emerging interdisciplinary set of practices in which hybrid methods of investigation, including artistic and interpretive as well as analytical approaches, are applied to the study of urban experience.

Through a three-course series, the Certificate offers PhD and Master degree students the opportunity to supplement their major areas of study with courses that explore cities and urban experience through a variety of disciplinary approaches. In particular, the Certificate emphasizes the intersection of interpretive approaches from the arts and humanities (including close reading, formal analysis, discourse analysis and the making of artistic work products) with methods from the environmental design disciplines (including spatial analysis, representation, and iterative design interventions as a means of research).

Future Histories Lab focuses on community-engaged, project-based studio courses that seek to reveal hidden histories in order to imagine new narratives.

Any UC Berkeley graduate student in good standing (GPA of 3.0 or better) may apply. The Humanities Studio is an interdisciplinary, project-based, community-engaged course in which students work closely with a community organization to research a neighborhood or a theme and to co-produce creative as well as documentary work telling often untold stories--always with an eye to the future. These specially designed courses focus on a different topic in each iteration and combine methods from the humanities, such as the study of literature, music, film, and performance, with methods from environmental design such as mapping, spatial analysis, and demographic analysis. The hands-on, project-based pedagogy in these classes provides experience useful to graduate students interested in the public humanities or in broadening their pedagogical knowledge. The Certificate in Urban Humanities provides a unique opportunity for making connections with students from across the campus with a shared interest in interdisciplinary approaches to studying urban life. Participation in the Certificate program makes you part of an active community of scholars, urban practitioners, and artists engaged in developing new methods of research and teaching.

The Certificate is based on the notion that learning occurs in many directions and that cities in the Global South are important sources of knowledge and not just objects of study. The same is true of diverse neighborhoods within global cities in North America and the Western world.

For students planning to enter the design and planning professions, the Certificate will provide an opportunity to incorporate critical approaches from the humanities in their work. For students in the humanities and social sciences, the Certificate will facilitate their participation in coursework that addresses both urban form and urban experience, and provide a chance to experience the research studio method, a pedagogy central to environmental design education.

For PhD students, the Certificate will demonstrate not only your knowledge of cities but your exposure to methods of experiential, project-based learning that may be valued by academic employers. GSI and GSR opportunities may give you a chance to build your pedagogy portfolio. For students in professional programs, the Certificate shows your interest in the human dimension of cities and your ability to interpret urban culture and experience through ethnography, storytelling, mapping, visual representation, and other methods.

The Division of Humanities and the Arts announces the opening of the application for the annual Stanford CCNY Summer Research Program. This program is designed for CCNY students considering graduate school, and specifically doctoral research, in one of the humanities disciplines. As many as five City College Humanities and the Arts students will spend eight weeks on the beautiful campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Students will participate in a weekly seminar on the graduate application process and research in the Humanities.

The students who are selected will receive up to $600 in travel expenses, room and board on the Stanford campus, a bicycle to commute on campus, and a $4,000 stipend. They will also receive a Stanford ID and access to campus networks, libraries, and athletic facilities. The program will run from June 26 through August 19.

Major must fall under the Division of Humanities and the Arts (excluding the visual and performing arts).
