College description: The Master of Sacred Music program at Boston University is at the forefront of professional training in sacred music.Applicants for the Master of Sacred Music must hold a BA or its equivalent and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. In addition, applicants must have basic skills in music, including courses in theory, music history, and choral conducting or organ. The degree program may exceed two years if remedial work is required in any aspect of the program.Applicants must demonstrate talent and ability in performance, scholarship, or composition sufficient to promise superior accomplishment at the graduate level. In addition, candidates must demonstrate prior interest in sacred music and a desire to pursue such study at the graduate level.Candidates may also be asked to demonstrate other keyboard skills, although it is understood that a candidate may not have had much experience in this area.For organ students, the uploaded audition may suffice as the audition requirement for students living than 300 miles from Boston.Students must complete a minimum of 48 or 45 semester credits, usually in two years, earning grades no lower than B− in all graduate-level music requirements and no lower than a C in theology requirements.

Intra-University Transfers & Dual DegreeTransfer credit is not accepted for courses taken at institutions which do not give graduate degrees.

College description: MFA degrees in performance, with emphases in Instrumental Performance, Vocal Arts, Piano Performance, Collaborative Pia and Guitar Lute Performance.PhD degree in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology.The department provides graduate students with an array of performance opportunities including opera, symphony orchestra, chamber music, art song, choral ensembles, guitar lute ensemble and contemporary music ensembles.In exceptional cases , a recently recorded performance may be accepted in lieu of a live audition.Applicants are expected to have good general knowledge of music history and music theory, competence in basic musicianship skills, including sight-singing, written and keyboard harmony, dictation, and basic keyboard facility Credit earned in such courses cannot be counted toward fulfillment of any degree requirement.The Music makes every effort to offer financial assistance through internal University sources to all worthy applicants who do not have their own sources of such as private resources, support by an external institution, and national or independent fellowships or scholarships. This may take the form of a fellowship, teaching assistantship , or graduate-student researcher position , or some combination thereof. Admission to graduate status does not carry with it any implication concerning the award of financial aid, and some students may be offered admission without any financial assistance.

Applicants whose primary language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in English for admission through the results of the TOEFL or IETS exam.Continued beyond the first year depends on the student’s making satisfactory progress in the graduate program, as determined in the First-Year Review.
