Note to applicants: Over the years, University of Chicago has found that grades, especially those in philosophy courses, are a somewhat better indication of philosophical potential than GRE scores. The average GPA in philosophy for the university recent admitted students has been 3.9 The analogous GRE averages are 710 verbal, 740 quantitative, and 5.5 analytic writing.
In evaluating the GRE scores of applicants, the university make allowance that these examinations are difficult for non-native speakers of English.

The Subject GRE is highly recommended, especially for those applying to the Physical and Theoretical tracks. The department accepts Chemistry, Biochemistry, or any STEM field Subject GRE.
Self-reported GRE scores are sufficient for the purposes of application review.

Religious Studies
Admission will depend not only on the achievement and promise of the applicant as attested through transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and GRE scores, but also on the clarity of the applicant statement of interest and aims, and on the compatibility of the applicant interests with the resources of the department.
The typical admitted student has a GRE Verbal score of around 150 and higher, a GPA over 3.8 from a competitive university or college, and very strong letters of recommendation.
The university regularly turn down students with 170 GRE verbal scores and 4.0 grade point averages.

The GRE is just one factor that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill consider, but the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill does so recognizing that someone can be a brilliant philosopher despite not being very good at multiple choice exams, and recognizing as well that someone might do extremely well on the GREs and yet not have a gift for philosophy. So although the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill does consider the GRE, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill gives substantial weight to their GPA , their letters of recommendation, and especially their writing sample.
For the Philosophy Department, the GPA is just part of the mix, so there is no fixed requirement. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is particularly interested in their philosophy GPA. Successful applicants will typically have a very strong background in philosophy, with a very high Philosophy GPA
