Prospective Ph.D. Students
The selection of PhD students admitted to the Political Science is based on an individualized, holistic review of each application, including the applicant’s academic record, the letters of recommendation, the scores on the General GRE , the statement of purpose, and the writing sample. Although Stanford University has no official score requirement, admitted students typically have GRE scores of 166 verbal, 163 quantitative, and a score of 5.5 in the analytical section. Admitted students typically have a GPA of at least 3.8 in their previous studies.
Admitted students typically have very high GRE scores
General GRE scores are required of all applicants. No other exams are accepted in lieu of the GRE.
All applicants must submit GRE scores, even if they have completed an advanced degree.
It will take two weeks from the date applicant application to Stanford for GRE and TOEFL scores to merge with their application and appear as Official on their application status page.
If applicant submitted their application than two weeks ago and their GRE or TOEFL scores are still unofficial, please check that the name applicant took the test under and the name applicant applied to Stanford under are exactly the same.
It takes approximately 5 weeks from the date applicant take the computer based GRE and TOEFL for ETS to send their scores to Stanford and for them to merge with their official application. Therefore, the university recommend that applicants take the GRE and TOEFL no later than early November to ensure that their scores are received before the Admissions Committee begins making admissions decisions.
GRE scores are valid for approximately five years from the date taken.

MIT Political Science
There is no minimum score for the GRE, but admission is very competitive and low GRE scores may weaken an application. The minimum score for the TOEFL is 600 paper based/100 internet based. The minimum score for IELTS is 7. If an applicant has not met the TOEFL/IELTS requirement the application will not be reviewed.
The application fee is $75.00 US dollars. The Admissions Committee will not review applications received without a fee.
The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) is pleased to offer fee waivers for US citizens and US permanent residents who demonstrate financial hardship, are current or former members of the United States Armed Forces, or who have participated in special fellowship programs, including MIT-sponsored diversity programs and recruitment events. International students attending US colleges and universities, who have participated in MIT sponsored programs, such as CONVERGE or the MSRP, are also eligible to apply for a fee waiver.
The application deadline is December 15th for admission the following September. Admission is for the fall semester only.
All applicants whose first language is not English are required to take the TOEFL, including students who have received degrees from English speaking institutions. In a limited number of cases a TOEFL waiver may be granted. Applicants must apply separately for a TOEFL waiver. They now also accept IELTs.
Since many schools do not calculate GPAs they do not impose a set minimum. Although they do not have a minimum GPA requirement the applicant pool is academically strong and very competitive.
Master degree in Political Science
The Vanderbilt University receive over 175 applications per year and can admit less than 15% of applicants. Each year, about 10 students matriculate into the program.
Admission to the graduate programs is through online application. Applicants must submit the following:
1. an official transcript from each college or university attended
2. recent GRE scores, for the verbal, mathematical, and written portions of the exam
3. three letters of recommendation from people who are familiar with the applicant's academic record
4. a statement of purpose indicating the student's interests and career goals
5. a writing sample of approximately 15-25 pages (preferably a paper from a course that illustrates the candidate's ability to write and to conduct research)
6. Students from non-English-speaking countries should also submit a recent TOEFL score
The Graduate Committee reviews several aspects of an applicant's file: the personal statement, academic record, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and writing sample. Successful applicants must be able to use the personal statement to articulate clearly their interest in pursuing a doctorate in political science. Successful applicants general have an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.3, and a GPA of 3.5 in their major field.
**There is no minimum score for the GRE, but the average quantitative GRE score of admitted applicants was 700 and the average verbal GRE score for admitted applicants was 600.**
Strong letters of recommendation (generally from faculty members) are essential. Finally, we make sure that there is a fit between the student's intellectual interests and our faculty's scholarly expertise.
