The MS in Structural Engineering and Design at Northwestern is designed to prepare our graduates to become creative structural designers with sound fundamentals and the ability to develop and maintain sustainable infrastructure systems.
The theoretical and behavioral study of structures is complemented with design courses and projects taught by registered PE SE.
The MS degree in Structural Engineering and Design consists of 12 courses, four of which form a core of required fundamental courses. either the Design track or the Research track. Each track consists of three courses, and students commit to one track or the other, and complete the sequence of courses. The remaining five courses are selected from a group of approved electives, based on the student career objectives and interests. For details, see the MS Structural Engineering and Design curriculum.
Professional development seminars are organized specifically for MS in Structural Engineering and Design students. This includes resume workshops hosted by engineers, and project presentations by structural engineering and associated professionals. Engineering Sciences Applied Mathematics
Admissions to the PhD program is competitive approximately 10 students enter the PhD program each year.
Applications are due by December 31 for admission for the following Fall quarter. The application and all materials must be submitted by this date to be given full consideration.
Successful applicants typically have good grades in relevant mathematics courses, and strong letters of recommendation.
Not all students admitted will have all these courses on their transcript. Sometimes the content is delivered in a course that is not officially listed as a mathematics course, neither of which will preclude an offer of admission.
Specific courses the university look for on previous transcripts are advanced calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, complex variables, numerical methods, and mathematical modeling. The first three courses are essential, while the others are preferred for successful applicants.
Foreign students from non-English speaking countries must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the International English Language Testing System exam.

Master of Financial Engineering
MB The differences between an MFE and MBA are numerous. Some of the differences are obvious, for example the MFE program is one year, while an MBA typically takes two years. The MFE is a Master degree in a specialized type of Finance, and an MBA is a general, well-rounded business degree. Most MBA programs do not require the high level of math, analytic ability, or computer programming experience required by the MFE program. And computational proficiency) are difficult for employers to find in graduates of standard MBA or Engineering programs.
Applicant will receive grades and certificates of completion, but they will not be part of their UC Berkeley transcript.

The Structural Engineering Department offers three different MS Degree options:.
M.S. in Structural Engineering with Specialization in SHM NDE.
In addition to the mainstream M.S. degree in Structural Engineering, there are two Structural Engineering M.S. degree specializations in Structural Health Monitoring and Non-Destructive Evaluation (SHM NDE) and Geotechnical Engineering. Two M.S. degree plans are offered for all degree programs, which are the M.S. Thesis Plan and the M.S. Comprehensive Examination Plan.
The M.S. Thesis Plan is designed for those students with an interest in research prior to entering the structural engineering profession or prior to entering a doctoral degree program. The M.S. Comprehensive Examination Plan focuses on coursework and requires the completion of a comprehensive examination covering multiple courses that the student has taken. The M.S. Comprehensive examination will be comprehensive and cover two focus sequences and at least one additional technical elective that the student has taken. The Comprehensive Examination is formatted such that the student completes sections of the exams throughout their degree program. Requirements for the Comprehensive Examination must be completed no later than the end of the eighth week of the quarter the student intends to graduate.

Core graduate courses are offered at least once per year and specialized courses are typically offered once every other year.
No single MS program fits the interests of all students we have a large population of MS students with interests in many areas of structural engineering.

Yes, you can enroll in the program as a part-time student, if you take the design project courses in sequence during the same academic year. Part-time students typically take one to two courses per semester and complete the program in two to three years.
Students also have the option to enroll in the Co-Op Program. Co-Op students will take one class each summer and two classes each fall spring semester while working 20 hours per week. Students in the co-op program will graduate in May of their second year.

The department also offers a seminar course each quarter dealing with current research topics in Earthquake Engineering (SE 290).
