The MPH in epidemiology is designed for individuals seeking specialization in advanced quantitative methods of epidemiology and its applications for clinical and population health research, policy, and programs. The degree also provides a public health framework for epidemiologists.
Eligible applicants for the MPH in epidemiology should meet one of the following criteria:
1. Hold a doctoral degree in a health profession or academic area related to public health.(International medical degrees also qualify as a doctoral degree.)
2. Hold a professional master’s degree in a health-related field with at least three years of health-related work experience following completion of the degree.
3. Hold a bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of post-baccalaureate experience in a relevant health-related field.
Current medical and dental students are not eligible for the MPH in epidemiology program.

The Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy has permanently removed the GRE as a requirement, as part of the commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants to the Ph.D. program are strongly encouraged to submit GRE scores as they can be helpful in the Admissions Committee’s assessment of readiness for doctoral study. For students taking the GRE who seek to refresh their verbal and quantitative skills, self-study materials and sample questions are available from the Educational Testing Service. Students whose native language is not English must meet TOEFL or IELTS requirements.

A GRE score is not required for application to BU School of Public Health and will not be considered if submitted.
International applicants must submit an English language proficiency exam. Applicants may submit the TOEFL or IELTS. TOEFL and IELTS exams are considered valid for two years from the date the exam was administered.
Applicants must submit official transcripts for all registered coursework from each college or university attended. The SOPHAS Official Transcript Request Form must be included with each transcript. Official transcripts will not be accepted from the applicant. Photocopies of official transcripts or unofficial records will not be accepted. International transcripts, including study abroad transcripts, may have additional requirements. International applicants should submit a WES ICAP evaluation.
If applicant are currently in a degree program, applicant are required to submit a current official transcript of courses completed and work in progress. If applicant are accepted for admission, a final official transcript after degree conferral must be submitted directly to Boston University prior to matriculation.
SPH reserves the right to reevaluate their application for admission upon receipt of the final official transcript.
The PhD program in Epidemiology requires three letters of recommendation for the application to be considered complete. SOPHAS provides an electronic submission process for all letters of recommendation.
The personal statement is intended to give applicants the opportunity to submit a narrative describing their past experience and current professional career objectives.
Address why the applicant wishes to obtain a doctoral degree in epidemiology and the reasons for pursuing the degree at BUSPH.
Comment on the applicants plans to use the education and training acquired at SPH.
A current résumé or curriculum vitae is required.
