The Master Program in Biomedical Sciences is an ideal program for a) students wishing to pursue biomedical research studies while preparing and selecting their choice of career pathways b) medical students who wish to conduct research, and c) students seeking a terminal degree before pursuing careers in industry, science advocacy education or the health-related professions.

The Biomedical Sciences M.S. program offers three general scientific enrichment pathways. Each pathway has the same core degree requirements but is associated with specific career strengthening emphasis. Students may switch between pathways and may combine pathways if eligible. Specific coursework will be guided by the student guidance committee and the Individual Development Plan jointly generated by the student and their guidance committee.

The deadline for priority review of applications and admission to the Fall Quarter is December 31. Applications may be considered for Winter and Spring quarter start dates if necessary. When applying, students are asked to note the desired curricular pathways or if they are undecided.

Curricular Pathway Options in the Biomedical Sciences M.S. Degree Program.

Pathway to the dual M.D.-M.S. (must be enrolled in UCR M.D. program).

Pathway to the terminal Master degree provides students with an opportunity to enhance their academics and develop their research skills in translational basic science. This pathway prepares students to gain an advanced degree that may be a stepping stone to many different careers in the biomedical science fields including but not limited to research in laboratory facilities, the public sector or science education.

Pathway to the Ph.D. degree provides students an opportunity to gain discernment in the field and to determine if a Ph.D. degree is in their future. This pathway provides students with pre-doctoral advising, science enrichment in biomedical sciences and research lab experience. Students on this pathway may be seeking careers in academia, research, health industry, or in education science advocacy.

Students successfully completing the M.S. program and wishing to continue in the UCR Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. degree program will have to apply separately for admission to the Ph.D. program. Applications will be evaluated as part of the total Ph.D. program applicant pool.

Pathway to the M.D. degree provides students with aspirations for a career in medicine with professional development resources, mentoring, academic support, and premedical advising including application and interview preparation.

Students successfully completing the M.S. program and wishing to continue in the UCR SOM M.D. degree program will have to apply separately for admission to the M.D. program. Applications will be evaluated as part of the total M.D. program applicant pool.

Pathway for dual M.D.-M.S. degree provides current M.D. students in the School of Medicine an opportunity to pursue a specialization in a specific area of research. Candidates should consult SOM Student Affairs prior to applying.

Biology graduates are employed in a broad variety of government and private sector positions including, but not limited to field positions (forest service, park service, fish and wildlife management, conservation, ecology), agriculture research or management, food manufacturing industries, waste management, environmental safety and testing, industrial quality control, pharmaceutical and immunochemical industries, biotechnology (genetic engineering, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology), health related research (cancer, infectious disease, genetics), health professions (medicine, dentistry, optometry, allied health, public health), and teaching at the secondary and college levels.

The SCU Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program offers a Post-MSMS Fellowship Moderator program allowing two SCU MSMS students to apply for the 11-month fellowship, including moderator activities. The MSMS Fellowship is a part-time position allowing Fellows to receive further education, research experience, and professional academia experience as MSMS Moderators.

The MSMS Fellowship Moderator program is based on an interdisciplinary, integrative healthcare model looking at whole-person care, including healthcare practice from the communities where we live, impact of disease based on the lifestyles we practice such as the food we eat, the transportation we depend on to access healthcare facilities, and the community health services we receive. Success in the interdisciplinary healthcare team will require the translation of high quality and high impact science and practical clinical experience into sound health policy. The goal of the MSMS Fellows Moderator Program is to provide MSMS students with increased opportunities, experience and skills necessary to help lead this effort, and in so doing, shape a healthy and productive future for all.

The MSMS Fellowship has an emphasis on teaching courses and conducting research and provides funding for both coursework and extracurricular projects.

Moderator responsibilities include ensuring efficiency in the learning experience for current MSMS students. The MSMS program is fully online.

Fellows also provide tutoring to MSMS students in all content covered throughout the duration of the program, and help guide students in creating timelines for applying to health professions programs.

The MSMS Fellowship Moderator program follows an 11-month MSMS hybrid term schedule. The Fellowship begins in the Fall Term and concludes at the end of the Summer Term.

The Post-MSMS Fellowship Moderator positions are remote. Fellows may report to the SCU campus, as needed. There may be travel to events and conferences, as needed.

The SCU MSMS Fellows are selected based on their potential to make a positive, long-lasting contribution to their academic discipline.

Only SCU MSMS students who will be completing their MSMS program are eligible to apply. Interested MSMS students should apply for the fellowship during the last term of their MSMS program, or soon after graduation.

Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) has announced a new partnership with A.T. Still University-School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) to expand access to education for aspiring physicians looking to earn a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Through this partnership, five annual interview slots are reserved for SCU students who graduate from the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program for consideration of acceptance to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree program at A.T. Still University. The two-year agreement began in January 2023 and will be reviewed every two years.
