The Division of Epidemiology is one of the graduate divisions within the SDSU School of Public Health. It offers the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in Epidemiology.

The program in Epidemiology is designed to prepare students to be public health practitioners as well as for careers in teaching and research. Epidemiologists may continue on to become leaders in public or private health agencies and organizations.

Students seeking a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology are required to file a formal Official Program of Study (list all the classes that will be taken to fulfill degree requirements) after completing at least 12 units of study, and before completing the last 9 units.

Students can complete their degree in the Epidemiology concentration by choosing either Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Manuscript). If students select Plan A, PH 799A is required for completion of their degree, accompanied by a final defense of their thesis. If students select Plan B, PH 798 (Special Study) is required, and a scientific manuscript based on their research must be prepared for completion of the degree.

The school expects a student to complete the degree within seven years. Failure to complete the degree requirements within seven years will result in dismissal from the program.

The Department has active research programs in cancer, molecular genetic, environmental and occupational epidemiology, neurodegeneration and aging-related diseases, diabetes, infectious diseases and research methodology. The Global Bio Lab, with its capacity to respond to the world’s deadliest biological threats, also offers cutting-edge training.

Epidemiology focuses on the health problems in population groups. The scope of this exciting field ranges from the study of the causes of disease to the control of prevention of disease and the distribution of health resources. Epidemiologists study the variation of disease in relation to age, sex, race, occupational and social characteristics, place of residence, susceptibility, exposure to specific agents or other relevant factors. The MS in Epidemiology is perfect for students intending to pursue a research career, as the MS is a research-oriented degree within the general field of epidemiology. It includes coursework in areas such as epidemiologic methods, biostatistics, data management, chronic diseases epidemiology, and global and infectious diseases epidemiology. In addition to coursework, the program includes either the preparation of a thesis, or a comprehensive examination and MS report.

The MS in Epidemiology requires 38 units of required core courses and 18 units of elective courses.

In addition, the student must complete at least 18 units of electives in Epidemiology selected from the following areas:.

The Chair of the committee and at least one other member must hold academic appointments in the Epidemiology. The committee approves the thesis prospectus before the student files for advancement to candidacy. The thesis must be acceptable to the thesis committee.

A comprehensive examination on the major area of study must be passed. If failed, the examination may be repeated once. In addition, the student must complete a research report which is approved by the guidance committee.

Students in the MS program should take Epidemiology 200A and Biostatistics 100A in their first quarter, Epidemiology 200B and Biostatistics 100B in their second quarter, and Epidemiology 200C in their third quarter. They may also take additional courses in each of those quarters or substitute Biostatistics 100A-B with appropriate higher level courses.

Students who plan to take their epidemiology first year core courses (Epi 200A, Epi 200B and Epi 200C) in a different sequence must have approval from their advisors.

The MS degree is normally obtained after 2 years of full-time study (six academic quarters).

This course provides students with an exciting introduction to epidemiology. The course begins with a review of the history of epidemiology and key concepts in population health. Then, students will learn how to conduct epidemiologic research (identify health problems, develop hypotheses, design studies, analyze data, draw conclusions and present findings). Lastly, students explore real life applications of epidemiology and the diverse set of career paths that are available to epidemiologists. The course will engage students in collaborative learning through group discussion, case studies, in-class activities, and a team project.

Epidemiology combines concepts and methods in biology, economics, mathematics, and statistics with the goals of understanding the distribution and determinants of disease, injury, and impaired productivity in populations, and recommending actions for prevention or control. The program provides rigorous training in the principles and practice of epidemiology with an emphasis on quantitative analytic methods and the mentoring of novel epidemiologic research. Areas of emphasis include infectious disease epidemiology wildlife epidemiology zoonotic and vector-borne diseases epidemiologic methods and biostatistics occupational and environmental epidemiology nutritional epidemiology health services and health economics social and behavioral epidemiology and reproductive, perinatal, pediatric, and developmental epidemiology. Epidemiology is concerned with the study of factors that determine the distribution of health and disease in human populations.

The purposes of epidemiological research are to discover the causes of disease, to advance and evaluate methods of disease prevention, and to aid in planning and evaluating the effectiveness of public health programs. Epidemiologists are interested in the study of infectious and noninfectious diseases. In recent years they have turned their attention increasingly toward the study of conditions affected by forces in the social and physical environment.

Our one-year program requires 42 units of coursework in public health and advanced epidemiologic and biostatistical methods.

Applicants must be doctoral level health professionals (e.g. physicians, veterinarians or dentists), have a prior doctoral degree in a related discipline (e.g. anthropology, sociology, psychology, demography or biology sciences), or be concurrently enrolled in a doctoral level degree program in a health profession or related discipline. Common work experience for admitted applicants includes medical doctor, dentist, pharmacist, veterinarian and or research experience in a public health setting.

Graduates often secure positions utilizing epidemiologic and statistical training in federal, state and local health departments, as well as a wide variety of academic research positions and positions in the private medical and health care fields.

The Division offers the Master and PhD programs in epidemiology and clinical research. The Master Degree in Epidemiology and Clinical Research provides students with the skills essential to patient-oriented clinical research, including epidemiologic methods and statistical analysis.
