The Master of Arts in Theatre Education MATE degree program is one of five graduate theatre programs offered by the Department of Drama. The MATE degree program is the only one of its kind in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Designed to specifically accommodate the schedules of working professionals, all classes are offered in the evenings year round.

This entire degree may be earned completely via online courses. Students meet with the instructor and classmates via video conferencing and submit all assignments electronically.

The MATE program accepts applications year round. It is possible to start in the Fall, Spring, or Summer.

This program provides intensive training and on-stage opportunities to develop your talents in performance, costumes, directing, dramatic writing, lighting and scenery. They offer this degree both on campus and fully online with all full-time online students paying in-state tuition. Available online emphases are design, technology and management (DTM), directing, dramatic writing and theatre pedagogy.

The Theatre Education Master of Arts – Theatre Educator Intensive program is an academically rigorous program examining the philosophical, theoretical and practical implications in the field of theatre education. In this program, students will reflect on the bigger challenges that constantly face theatre educators in the classroom—and more broadly in the country.

This master's program features online delivery in the Fall and Spring academic terms, plus Summer workshops, to fit into the schedules of current and aspiring theatre educators. The summer workshops will involve viewing and working on theatre productions and attending classes.

In this online theatre degree program, you will focus on methodologies to teach and work with theatre students both inside and outside the classroom. Learn from the highly qualified theatre instructors and study topics in theatre production, acting theory, approaches to directing and classical theatre. Gain expertise in every facet of theatre education and prepare for exciting careers such as a community theatre worker, drama therapist, or theatre arts curriculum supervisor.

The master’s degree program offers an intensive study of dramatic traditions as well as practical, artistic explorations. For those interested in the traditional graduate experience, our two-year program allows students to dive into graduate school and commit to the University Playhouse’s yearly productions.

The Department of Theatre offers two different tracks towards earning your master’s degree. Explore what option works best for your career interests and research goals. You can earn your master’s degree in as little as 14 months with our accelerated track. We also offer a more traditional two-year graduate experience.

The thesis track prepares you for Ph.D. programs and other professions. Work alongside faculty as you research theatre performance, pedagogy, and principles. This option is only available to students pursuing the traditional two-year program.

Earn your master’s degree in theatre with the non-thesis track. Designed to offer a wide variety of courses, this track provides a broad education in theatre. This option is available to students pursuing the accelerated or two-year track.

The TWU Master of Arts in Theatre online-hybrid option is designed for Texas residents who are unable to attend traditional face-to-face courses while they earn college credit towards their Master of Arts in Theatre degree.

At least 51% of the total institutional degree is offered by distance learning methods. Some courses are presented in traditional, face-to-face sessions. Other courses combine face-to-face class meetings with regular online communication. Still, other courses are completely online while some are administered through independent study with a Theatre Program faculty member. Courses offered as hybrid classes will require 3-6 campus meetings per class.

Classes are offered in the Redbud Theater Complex in Hubbard Hall on the TWU Denton campus and online. The TWU Master of Arts degree plan requires 36 semester credit hours for successful completion.

The Master of Arts in Theatre develops both the scholar and artist in all aspects of the art form, from theory to production. You will focus on theatre teaching methods, character development, analyzing live theatrical performances, aesthetics and dramaturgy. You’ll also learn a range of practitioner-oriented disciplines including acting, directing and design from an award-winning theatre college. Presented from a Christian worldview, this online theatre major provides you the option of attending an on-campus summer residency in Virginia Beach.

On completing this online M.A. in theatre degree, you will be able to analyze written dramatic texts for film, television or theatrical production and assist with functions within a theatrical organization such as season selection, audience education and audience development.

Students who complete our level-one camps that provide an introduction to acting may return for our level-two camps that build upon these skills.

NYFA currently offers in-person, on-campus summer camps and weekend acting camps, as well as online programs.

By combining interactive classes with direct, hands-on acting in front of the camera, students can gain experience in acting, while building additional skills in presentation, articulation, public speaking, and creative collaboration. No experience is required to attend. A majority of our acting summer camps are full-time classes, and there are additional weekend and online workshops available during the academic year.

To attend a level-two program, students must have attended a prereqisite 3-Week, 4-Week, 6-Week, 12-Weekend level-one camp of the same discipline.

In these 1,3, and 4-Week camps, teens are introduced to the principles of acting for film to establish a foundation as actors. These full-time, virtual camps are offered during the summer.

For students who wish to pursue acting during the academic year, NYFA also offers in-person workshops and online classes.

In these hands-on programs, students craft compelling material for on-camera tv and filmmaking auditions. Students may also experiment with self-generated content including web series, online videos, and sketches. The online acting classes are currently available after school or on the weekend.
