Graduate instruction in the Department of Economics is designed to lead to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in economics. The general purpose of the graduate program is to provide thorough training in both the techniques and the applications of economic analysis.

A mandatory course in research ethics must be completed in the spring of the first year. In addition, students are encouraged to do independent work and to participate in several workshops sponsored by the department. The Master of Arts degree is normally an incidental degree on the way to full Ph.D. candidacy and is earned after a student successfully passes the six first-year courses with an average of 2.5 or better, and two field examinations OR six courses beyond the first-year core. It may also be awarded to students who, for various reasons, leave the Ph.D. program, provided that these requirements have been met. As a normal part of graduate training, students are required to serve as assistants in instruction during their third, fourth and fifth years, teaching class sections or grading papers for either graduate or courses. Experience gained in being an AI is very valuable for those seeking academic jobs.

The science of biology is extremely broad, ranging across the domains of molecules, cells, tissues and organs, organisms, and ecosystems. Over, biology explores questions of evolutionary history and the processes of evolutionary change, as well as the mechanisms by which cells, organisms, and ecosystems function. Students majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology receive a thorough yet varied liberal education and preparation for professional careers in a diverse array of fields. Practical applications of biology include the development of biologicals and pharmaceuticals, the practice of medicine, and the pursuit of the scientific bases for understanding the development and function of biological systems.

Independent research courses before senior year The only independent research course available to students prior to the senior year is MCDB 474. This course is graded pass fail and contributes to the thirty-six course credits required for the bachelor degree, but it does not substitute for any MCDB major requirement, including the senior requirement. No independent research course satisfies a laboratory requirement for the MCDB major. B.S. degree program For the B.S. degree, the senior requirement is usually fulfilled by completing a yearlong research course, MCDB 485, 486. Yale College does not grant academic credit for summer research unless the student is enrolled in an independent research course in Yale Summer Session. Seniors working toward the B.S. degree are expected to spend at least ten hours per week in the lab conducting individual research. At the end of the course, the student completes a detailed prospectus describing the thesis project and the work completed to date. The committee evaluates an oral and written presentation of the prospectus and determines whether the student may continue in the combined program MCDB 595, 596, a four-credit, yearlong course that is similar to MCDB 495, 496 and is taken during the senior year. During the course, the student gives an oral presentation describing the work. Upon successful completion of this examination, as well as all other requirements, the student is awarded the combined B.S. M.S. degree. Students have the opportunity to carry out independent research, which may consist of laboratory or field work.

The Psychology Graduate Group offers a full-time Ph.D. program with curricular and research opportunities in a broad range of areas, including: sensation and perception, cognition, language, learning, motivation, motor control, psychopathology, judgments and decisions, and social processes.

After completing their postdoctoral training, 60% of the university graduates have secured tenured or tenure track positions, 24% are employed by industry or government, and the remaining 16% of graduates are in non-tenure track academic positions. For students who are pursuing clinical training, the majority defend their dissertation within 5 years and then complete a one-year clinical internship as the final step in completing their degree. The one-year predoctoral clinical internship is a requirement of programs accredited by the American Psychological Association. All parts of the GRE are required. Although the Psychology Subject Test is not required for non-clinical applicants, applicants who are admitted to the clinical program must take the Psychology Subject Test before they matriculate in order to demonstrate that they have acquired foundational, discipline-specific knowledge. This will fulfill several important American Psychological Association requirements and will allow for greater flexibility in choosing coursework at the graduate level. The twin emphases of scholarship and research accomplishment pervade the graduate program. The first-year program is divided between courses that introduce various areas of psychology and a focused research experience. A deep involvement in research continues throughout the graduate program, and is supplemented by participation in seminars, teaching, and general intellectual give-and-take. The university policy makes it possible for graduate students to focus on their own research interests and pursue as independent a course of research as seems suitable.
