Masters programs in African-American/Black Studies which do not require GRE

Students entering the program may come from any department in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Graduate engagement with the department is not limited to students pursuing requirements of the certificate. The department also sponsors programming and events throughout the academic year for graduate students at all stages. Note: Students cannot be admitted to Princeton University through the African American Studies Certificate Program since it is not a degree program.

Admission Details

Students who do not pass a part of the general examination on a first attempt may on the recommendation of the department stand for reexamination of that part within a year.

Students are required to teach one year of German Language

In order to receive sixth-year funding from the German Department, students are required to teach in the second-year German Language sequence

African American Studies, by its very nature, is an interdisciplinary field. It acquaints the student with myriad ways of thinking (historical, sociological, literary, quantitative and qualitative analysis), researching, and writing the diverse experiences of African Americans in the United States and of African descended people throughout the African Diaspora (from dispersion, colonialism, the slave trade and slavery, through emancipation, decolonization, independence, and postcolonialism). African American Studies brings together the voluminous scholarship generated by past and present historians political scientists sociologists anthropologists cultural, literary, and performance studies critics and scholars working on diverse topics and constructions of class, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. The Department offers advanced graduate training through a PhD in African American Studies.

Admission Details

The Northwestern University does NOT require the GRE from the university applicants.

International students who have received a degree from an accredited, English-speaking institution will not be required to take the new language test or attend language course work.

Double Major in African American Studies Rhetoric with a minor in Education. The experience that I value most as an alumni of the department is the high level of critical thinking and analysis that was demanded out of every student in every class and lecture. It was never enough to solely discuss my experience as an African American as a means of defending or challenging a point. Consistently engaging in such high level thinking was invaluable and the ability to do so accurately (as the department trained me to be able to), is a skillset that I use each and every day on the job.
