Strong ties with local educational and cultural institutions, including the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, State Museum of Pennsylvania, Landis Valley Musuem, Hershey Museum, National Civil War Museum, and the Dauphin County Historical Society, Cumberland County Historical Society, and other public heritage resources provide excellent learning opportunities for students.

Taking advantage of its location in a capital region with internationally known heritage sites and American Studies resources such as the Gettysburg Battlefield, Three-Mile Island, Hershey, Steelton, Anthracite Coal Region, and Amish Country, it emphasizes critical cultural inquiry and the application of American Studies to public heritage, public policy, and cultural resource management, including governmental work, museums, cultural agencies, education, archives and records management, public policy, and communications. A foundation for this application is an understanding of the American experience developed within the intellectual legacy of American Studies.

A statement of intent

Students applying for scholarships and assistantships are requested to submit general examination scores of the Graduate Record Examination taken within five years previous to the date of application. The GRE is recommended, but not required, for admission.

English proficiency test scores may be required for international applicants.

Scores from the Graduate Record Examination ;

A letter of 500 to 1000 words outlining significant scholarly and applied experience, career goals, commitment to American Studies as a field, and academic objectives;

The student is required to take a minimum of 30 - 33 credits in American Studies, including at least 18 credits in the 500 series.

A doctoral student is required to complete the program, including defense and acceptance of the doctoral dissertation, within eight years after successful completion of the qualifying examination.

Make up any deficiencies in graduate courses in American Studies noted in the letter of acceptance

Although the exact number of courses required in each subfield may vary among students, typically four per subfield are required.

For most students, the total time required to reach completion of the higher degree will be shortened by about a year.

Must present a plan of study approved by the student’s adviser in the application process.

The program's mission, purpose, and objective emphasis is to graduate, in a timely manner, knowledgeable professionals and academicians well grounded in Native American issues and scholarship.

Candidates are not required to complete the Graduate Record Examination General Test, but may do so if they feel it will strengthen their applications.

A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution is required for admission to the Master's program in Native American Studies.

Three letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's potential as a graduate student, preferably by academic sources.

Minimum scores required are as follows: TOEFL , IELTS or PTE

For all other applicants, the deadline is July 15 for fall and November 15 for spring semester.

A prerequisite for application is the successful completion of NASX 530 Federal Law and Indian Policy.

The deadline to apply is January 4th. To apply, applicant must complete an on-line application and provide a candidate statement, writing sample, 3 recommendations and transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities in addition to the application fee. Here applicant may complete the application, taking as much time as applicant need, of course while keeping the January 4th deadline in mind. The TOEFL/IELTS is the only admissions requirement that applies specifically to international applicants. The University of Chicago does not require a minimum GRE score for admission nor do University of Chicago provides statistics on the GRE scores for admitted students. The university will accept GRE scores that are less than 5 years old. The University of Chicago does require that admitted applicants obtain a minimum score for the TOEFL prior to matriculation.

Applying for the Graduate Program in South Southeast Asian Studies

The university request that applicant include a writing sample with their application.

The sample may be a paper written for a class , an honors thesis, an article written for an academic journal — whatever applicant think best reflects their knowledge, interest, and writing ability.

Non-Degree Application - Submit their transcripts

The Case Western Reserve University is unable to deliver an admission letter without having their official transcripts on file from their highest degree earned.

Anyone wishing to take non-degree courses should apply through the online application system and pay the $50 non-refundable application fee. Applicant must send official transcripts in order for their application to be processed.

Case Western Reserve University employees do not need to submit degree verification and their application fee is waived.
