The Master of Professional Studies degree is intended primarily for applicants who want to further their academic training in animal science but whose interests may not be oriented toward research. It's a special non-thesis degree program requiring a minimum of two residence units and the satisfactory completion of 30 hours of coursework related to the professional interests of the candidate. Approval of the report of a problem-solving project is also required.Applicants are NOT required to submit GRE general test scores.
College description: The Animal Science M.P.S. graduate program is designed to prepare individuals for specialist and management positions in county agricultural extension, government, or industry, and requires a final paper. The M.P.S. is generally considered to be a terminal degree.The plan of study leading to the Master of Professional Studies degree has an industry orientation and provides opportunities for students to increase their knowledge and competencies in the various fields of agriculture.The emphasis of this degree is for students to learn knowledge as professional practitioners.All requirements for a master degree, whether satisfied on the University Park Campus or elsewhere, must be met within five years or a period spanning six consecutive summers.A minimum of 30 credits and a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for graduate work done at the University are required for graduation.Two credits in ANSC 590, Colloquium one credit of ANSC 500, Foundation Readings in Animal Science and one credit of AN SC 502, Scientific Scholarship.A minimum of 30 graduate credits is required, including at least six credits of formal courses at the 500 level. A maximum of 10 credits may be earned in special problem-type courses, which may include up to three credits for the M.All graduate degree candidates shall assist in teaching at least one course.
Although not required, applicants are strongly encouraged to take the Graduate Record ExaminationsThe culminating experience for the degree is a scholarly paper completed while the student is enrolled in ANSC 596.Students are required to write a thesis, and at least 6 credits in thesis research must be taken in conjunction with completing the thesis.Ph.D. degree requirements include successful completion of the following: approved graduate course work, English Competence requirements, a comprehensive examination, and a final oral examinationStudents who completed 2 credits of ANSC 590 as part of an M.S. degree program in Animal Science must take 1 additional credit of ANSC 590 during their Ph.D. program. For students entering the Ph.D. program with an M.S. degree from another institution, one credit of ANSC 590 will be waived; therefore, they will be required to complete 2 credits of ANSC 590 during their Ph.D. program.
