The University of California-Santa Cruz does not require a Subject GRE, since there is none that covers the wide range of material that the university want the university incoming students to know. The University of California-Santa Cruz does require the general GRE exam, and the TOEFL exam. The purpose of a Ph.D. thesis is to establish that the individual is capable of significant research contributions—thus it is essential that the proposal make it clear what the student has done and will do.
