Modern Thought and Literature

College description: The DLCL is comprised of five different academic departments: Comparative Literature, French and Italian, German Studies, Iberian and Latin American Cultures, and Slavic Languages and Literatures.Each year, the program awards up to 100 high-achieving students with full funding to pursue a graduate education at Stanford, including full-time master’s and doctoral students. To be considered, applicant must apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars by early September, and separately graduate degree program applicant wish to pursue.The OPI certificate is not required, but requested.However, their online application MUST contain scans of their transcripts so that they may be reviewed by the committee.Letters of recommendation may be sent using Interfolio or a University Career Center.Graduate funding typically covers five academic years as well as five 10-week summer quarters.

The purpose of the master's program is to further develop knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary literary studies and to prepare students for a professional career or doctoral studies.

Students are not admitted into the program for the purpose of earning a terminal Master of Arts degree.

The deadline for application is February 15 or the first business day following, if the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday.

Except in unusual cases, this will mean courses taken in the autumn and winter quarters of the year of application for admission.

The GRE is not required for application to the program. All applicants must submit the following as part of their application: statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample of a maximum of about 7000 words, or two shorter papers of a similar combined length.

Petitions to modify this requirement to substitute a course from a non-literature department for one or more of the required eight literature courses must be approved by the MTL Committee in Charge.

In addition to the required six courses in a minor or a concentration, two additional courses from non-literature departments are chosen in consultation with the student's academic adviser.

Although students have some flexibility in arranging for teaching appointments, program approval is required in order to assure that each experience provides appropriate and useful training.

The submission of a statement outlining the scope and coherence of the interdisciplinary component of the program in relation to the literary component, and noting the relevance of the course work to that program.

Admissions Procedures

The deadline for applications to the PhD Program in English is December 15 during the academic year before desired enrollment. The deadline for applications to the MA Program in English is May 1 of the academic year before desired enrollment.

In its most obvious sense, comparative literature might be seen to start here.Applicant will be asked to think literature not only from differing national traditions but from widely separated historical periods as well.Applicant will be asked to think theoretically the idea of literature itself, for example, some of the following questions. Students interested in literary theory will find much in the study of comparative literature to interest them, for example, the challenge of confronting Western literary theory with previously unexplored non-Western literatures.
