PhD Admissions Statistics

College description: Excel in 2 Degree Courses to Qualify for Admission. Your middle and high school students will gain the math skills needed to succeed in life, work, and academia. Build deeper knowledge of mathematics content, with a particular focus on middle and high school math classrooms. Develop an enhanced understanding of what it means to learn math and where mathematical misconceptions and student confusion can occur.

Admission to the PhD program is extremely competitive, so it is difficult to assess any qualified applicant's likelihood of admittance. However, on average, we admit approximately 10% of qualified applicants

An applicant should have the equivalent math background of Mathematics 21a and 21b (see Harvard course catalog), at minimum. Students who do not have that level may not compete well against undergraduate math or statistics majors in admissions and will struggle in upper-level statistics courses

The GRE Math Subject Test is not required, however some faculty do want to see the math subject test score. We only recommend taking the GRE Math Subject Test if the applicant is very confident of doing well.

Adequate command of spoken and written English is essential to success in graduate study at Harvard. Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who received their undergraduate degree from an academic institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must prove their English proficiency by earning either a minimum score of 80 on the Internet based test (iBT) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language

Mathematics Graduate Programs

College description: We offer an M.S. in Mathematics with degree options in Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and an M.S. in Statistics Data Science. Within the M.S. in Mathematics program, students can choose one of two program options: Pure Mathematics or Applied Mathematics. All M.S. degree programs (Mathematics or Statistics Data Science) have two possible degree plans: the Thesis Plan or the Comprehensive Exam Plan (Non-Thesis Plan). This option provides a solid foundation in the theoretical aspects of mathematics.

Applicants must apply directly to the UNR Graduate School through the graduate admissions portal. Applicants must meet the University graduate admission requirements

Mathematics Statistics

College description: degrees in both mathematics and statistics as well as M.S. The applied mathematics and analysis professors and, in particular, my advisor Panos Kevrekidis made those five years at UMass both enjoyable and productive. After visiting other graduate programs in the US, I appreciate even the small size of the graduate program and the attention graduate students were receiving at the UMass program.

All application materials must be submitted to the Graduate Admissions Office. Without the application fee the Graduate Admissions Office will not process the application and will not forward the application to our department. The application fee must be paid at the time that the application is submitted. The application fee cannot be waived, except for U.S. citizens and permanent residents who qualify for a waiver of the GRE fee.

The general GRE is strongly recommended for all applicants, but it is not required. The mathematics subject GRE is required only for applicants to the Mathematics Ph.D. program (unless you choose the Statistics subfield in which case it is not required). In other words, if you apply to the Applied Math M.S. program or any Statistics program, you are not required to take any GRE. The only required GRE is the mathematics subject GRE and that exam is a requirement only for applicants to the Mathematics Ph.D. program who are not specializing in Statistics.

We require two letters, but if more letters will give a better picture of an applicant's strengths, it will certainly help; there is no upper limit on the number of letters allowed.

The university will require official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools you have attended, where six or more credits were taken. Official transcripts are normally provided by the schools and should be sent in a sealed envelope.

Computational and Applied Mathematics

College description: Statistics coursework acquaints students with the role played in the modern world by probabilistic and statistical ideas and methods. Students grow familiar with both the theory and the application of techniques in common use as they are trained in statistical research. The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree is designed for those students interested in applied statistics while the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is intended for students desiring to pursue research positions or graduate study in Statistics. The graduate program has areas of specialization in applied probability, Bayesian methodology, bioinformatics, biomathematics, biostatistics, computational finance, data visualization, environmental health, functional data analysis, graphical models, large and complex data, machine and statistical learning, networks, neuroscience, nonparametric function estimation, social sciences, statistical computing, spatial statistics, stochastic processes, systems biology, time series analysis, and urban analytics.

Admittance to a Rice University Computational and Applied Mathematic graduate-degree program requires a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.

Applicants must submit their applications to the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics using the online application system.

The application fee is $85 and must be paid before submitting an online application. The fee can be paid online using a major credit card. Applicants that believe they may be eligible for a fee waiver should contact the department; however, please note that fee waivers are only granted in rare cases.

Using the online application system, you must upload the following documents: unofficial copies of your University transcripts, statement of purpose, 3-4 letters of recommendation, GRE scores and, for international students, TOEFL scores.

The TOEFL or IELTS may be waived for an international student who has received a degree from a university at which English is the official language of communication.

Although the admissions committee may consider any test scores submitted, GRE subject tests are not required, but are considered if submitted.

At least three letters of recommendation are required; the preferred number is four.
