The various parts of their application shed light on these questions.

Students in the Master's program may choose an area of specialization , such as biostatistics, statistical genetics, statistical finance, environmental statistics, computational neuroscience, machine learning, pattern recognition, scientific computation, survey methodology, etc.

Their application will be reviewed according to the same criteria as all other applications.

University of Chicago has no minimum grade point average for admission to the university programs, but the University of Chicago does not view poor grades favorably, especially those obtained in statistics and mathematics courses.

Letters of recommendation provide insight into abilities, strengths, and weaknesses that cannot be reflected in grades and test scores alone.

Three letters of recommendation are required.

The university require the Graduate Record Examinations General Test of all applicants; in addition, it is strongly encouraged that applicants to the doctoral program take the GRE Mathematics Subject Test.

The GRE is offered several times a year by the Educational Testing Service Consequently, the university encourage applicants to take the GRE no later than August and to take it earlier if possible.

The university must receive their scores directly from ETS; scanned or unofficial copies are not accepted.applicant are, however, encouraged to self-report scores in their online application while applicant are waiting for an official score report.

Official GRE scores are valid for up to five years past the test date.

Otherwise, applicant are required to take the internet-based test version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the International English Language Testing System It is necessary to take all parts of the TOEFL or IELTS. Poor TOEFL/IELTS scores are grounds for denial of admission, regardless of the strength of other parts of their application.

Instead, applicant should use the Candidate Statement as an opportunity to tell us about aspects of yourself that are not apparent from their transcript, such as extracurricular projects applicant have completed, work experience applicant have had, and so on. If applicant have completed graduate work elsewhere, their statement should include their reasons for wanting to change institutions or degree programs. This part of their statement is essential if applicant have completed more than two years of graduate study at other institutions.

A waiver of the fee can be considered; see the fee waiver within the online application for further information.

If applicant are applying both to Statistics and to another University of Chicago program, applicant will submit separate applications and supporting materials to each program. The only exception is standardized test scores: all departments are able to access each other’s GRE and TOEFL records.

Mathematics

College description: The Applied Mathematics and Statistics is devoted to the study and development of mathematical disciplines especially oriented to the complex problems of modern society.Probability and Statistics is treated in the curriculum as a single general area, dealing in a unified way with theory and methodology for probabilistic representation of chance phenomena, applications of stochastic modeling to physical and social sciences, formulation of statistical models, fitting of statistical models to data, and interpretation of data. Discrete Mathematics includes the traditional themes of graph theory and combinatorics, as well as newer topics arising from modern technological and theoretical developments. The fourth general area, Computational and Applied Mathematics, covers topics pertaining to computing, numerical analysis, advanced matrix analysis, and mathematical modeling. In its fundamental role of representing applied mathematics at Johns Hopkins University, the Applied Mathematics and Statistics is complemented by the Mathematics, with its differing emphasis. The department’s degree programs include foundational and introductory course work drawing from all areas of the curriculum, along with specialized course work in areas such as probability, statistics, operations research, and optimization. The aim is to prepare graduates for professional careers in the mathematical sciences and related areas, in academic institutions as well as in governmental, industrial, and research organizations. The graduate program leads to the M.A., M.S.E., and Ph.D. degrees.Modeling and Statistical Analysis of Data for Chemical and Biomolecular Engineers. The second element of the requirement requires the student to take a course where significant programming is perfomed in the service of mathematics and or statistics.Requirements 1–9 together constitute a minimal core program, allowing maximum flexibility in planning degree programs.

Admission to the PhD program is based on primarily on academic records, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

Official GRE scores for both the general and the subject test

Official TOEFL scores

The required Statement of Purpose discusses their academic interests, objectives, and preparation. The optional Personal Statement describes their personal background, and helps us create a more holistic understanding of applicant as an applicant. If applicant wish applicant may also discuss their personal background in the Statement of Purpose , instead of submitting separate statements.

Application fee waivers are available based on financial need and/or participation in certain programs.

Proficiency can be demonstrated by submitting results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language or the IELTS. Johns Hopkins prefers a minimum score of 100 on the TOEFL or a Band Score of 7 on the IELTS. Results should be sent to Johns Hopkins directly by TOEFL or IELTS. However, do not send the student copy or a photocopy of the TOEFL.
