All doctoral students are required to complete a minor.

Professional Development is a required part of the MDTP curriculum. Students are required to perform a second semester of teaching practicum, carry out an internship for as long as one semester, take at least 2 credits of coursework from the list of approved classes or through the Delta Program, or perform other professional development activities equivalent to 2 semester hours of coursework as judged by the thesis committee.

All MDTP students are required to complete a Teaching Practicum.

Microbiology Graduate Program

MS students are required to take 8 credits from the core curriculum , 12 credits chosen from the electives relevant to their concentrations, 4 research credits and 6 thesis credits, for a total of 30 credits.

PhD students are required to take 12 credits from the core curriculum , 15 credits chosen from the electives relevant to their concentrations, and 9 dissertation credits, for a total of 42 credits.

Current Topics in Microbiology: Seminar : Exposure to the breadth of research including microbiology from external and internal speakers; required presentation on the student’s research project will foster oral communication and professional development.
