Near Eastern Studies - Graduate School

PhD Students in the Humanities and Social Sciences (FAS). The program for this terminal AM degree requires two years of study: eight four-credit courses each year making a total of sixteen four-credit courses. Statement of Purpose and Writing Sample

A writing sample is required for PhD applicants and should be a standalone research essay or an excerpt from a longer piece of work and between 15 and 25 pages.

The statement of purpose should be a two-page document that presents both their general academic trajectory and specific research interests.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences - Middle Eastern Studies

Through this dual BA MA program, College students can earn a BA degree and also an MA degree in Middle Eastern Studies after only five years of study at the University of Chicago. You may register here. (in the College and in CMES) beginning in the Autumn Quarter of their fourth year at the University. In other words, during their fourth year at the University of Chicago, students are simultaneously pursuing the requirements of the BA and the MA degree.

Admission Details

To apply, applicant must complete the online application and provide a candidate statement, writing sample, three letters of recommendation, unofficial transcripts from all prior post-secondary institutions, and the online application fee. The University of Chicago does not require the GRE General Test, nor do University of Chicago provides statistics on GRE scores for previously admitted students.

Center for Middle Eastern Studies

The graduate program in Near Eastern studies prepares students for academic and research careers in one or of the following areas: ancient Near Eastern studies (including archaeology) Arabic literature biblical studies early Christianity Hebrew literature Islamic studies Judaic studies and the modern Middle East. Completion of the Ph.D. program normally requires three years of full-time course work at Cornell and two additional years of dissertation research and writing. For example, students interested in modern history are strongly encouraged to acquire a background in pre-modern history and culture, and students interested in a particular Near Eastern literary or religious tradition are advised to investigate another Near Eastern tradition. We expect our students to demonstrate mastery in the language or languages of the main texts that are directly related to the topic of their dissertations.

The Statement of Purpose is the single most important item in the application. The applicant's statement should be approximately 2 pages in length.

If applicant are offered admission and accept the offer, applicant will be required to send in their official transcripts at that time.

In addition to the required English language writing sample, applicants may also submit a writing sample in a language other than English.

Three letters of recommendation are required for a complete application. Recommenders are required to submit their recommendations electronically through the Rackham online application.

The statement should not exceed 1-page in length.

Applicants to this program are not required to submit GRE scores. GRE scores that are submitted will not be reviewed by the admissions committee.

U-M LSA Middle East Studies

There are few issues in international affairs that do not involve the Middle East. The master of arts curriculum includes a range of courses covering the history, politics, economics, international relations, and cultures of the societies and nations of the Middle East. In addition, completion of the MA in Middle East studies requires demonstrated oral and reading proficiency in a language of the Middle East region. All students complete a Middle East Studies cornerstone and a year-long capstone project.

Admission Details

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission and choose to enroll.

Students are required to complete a two-semester capstone sequence that involves collaboration on a project of mutual interest and research related to the Middle East.

Students in the Middle East studies program are required to demonstrate the currently-required level of proficiency in one of the following languages by passing a reading and speaking proficiency examination administered by the Elliott School: Modern Standard Arabic ; Persian; Hebrew Turkish.

The Center also supports summer language study and research focusing on the Middle East, North Africa and Islamic Studies conducted within the United States or abroad through competitive Summer Research Grants. Each MEST Graduate Assistantship is a 9-month, 50% appointed position and offers a stipend of $15,000 as well as a tuition waiver for up to 15 graduate credit hours per semester (Fall and Spring).

Grant awardees are required to submit a 3-5 page summary report of research conducted and 5-10 good quality photos taken over the course of the trip within 30 days of research completion, or be considered ineligible for future funding.

All applications must include a statement of purpose indicating conference name, location and the nature of participation along with a letter of invitation indicating that the applicant has been selected to participate.
