College description: Most graduate students in the Field of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology receive full funding in one of three forms: graduate research assistantships , teaching assistantships , and fellowships.Assistantships may be awarded by either the Ithaca or the Geneva unit of the Section of Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology. Students typically have considerable freedom to choose a research program within the section offering the GRA, although some constraints may at the discretion of the section chairs.Teaching in the biology program also satisfies the teaching requirement for a degree in Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology. In addition, incoming Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology students have been successful in recent years when competing for Presidential Life Science Fellowships, a prestigious award given to a limited number of students annually throughout the university.Growth chambers, cell culture and transformation facilities, greenhouses, and field plots are also readily available.Applicants are required to submit scores on the GRE general test and are advised to submit scores on the GRE subject test in biology. Foreign applicants must also submit TOEFL scores.GRE subject test in biology advisedTOEFL minimum score -- Writing: 20; Listening: 15; Reading: 20; Speaking 22Demonstrate a degree of independence in research.

College description: The Interdepartmental Plant Biology major coordinates graduate education and research in the areas of plant biology including but not limited to plant biochemistry, plant cellular and molecular biology and plant physiology. Graduate study in IPB, leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. Degrees, is offered through eight participating departments: Agronomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics Molecular Biology, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Chemistry, Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, Genetics Development Cell Biology, Horticulture, and Plant Pathology.Graduates have a broad understanding of basic, functional plant biology with emphases on fundamental biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. They are able to address complex research and policy problems in agriculture, biotechnology, and basic plant biology. All M.S. candidates take a core curriculum comprising courses recommended from the following four categories, attend research seminars, research credits , annual Loomis Distinguished Lecture in Plant Biology and mini-symposium and retreats.Enroll each term in the Interdepartmental Plant Biology seminar PLBIO 696 Research Seminar or its listed equivalent. All Ph.D. candidates take a core curriculum comprising courses recommended from the following four categories, attend research seminars, research credits , annual Loomis Distinguished Lecture in Plant Biology and mini-symposium and retreats. In addition to the required core courses, a wide selection of courses is available to IPB graduate students for broadening their scientific education.Prere BIOL 0, PHYS 111, CHEM 1 one semester of biochemistry recommendedPhotosynthesis, respiration, and other aspects of plant metabolism.Prere BIOL 313, BIOL 314, BIOL 0 or BBMB 405Plant nuclear and organelle genomes regulation of gene expression hormone signaling ganization, function, and development of plant cells and subcellular structures regulation of plant growth and development. As a first step, Iowa State University has collected information on application requirements as well as links where applicant can find further information.
