The admissions committee can best asses a complete application. It is not possible for the student or the Physics department to edit an application once submitted. Materials submitted by others will be accepted by the application after the deadline date through invitation , or if sent by GRE, TOEFL.
The university cannot assess their chances of admission prior to reviewing their entire application.
The Admission Committee reviews all aspects of their application, including personal statement, recommendation letters, grades, GRE subject and general scores, research experience and related original publications, etc.
Application fee waivers are not available for international applicants.
For the PhD program, the GRE general test is required and the GRE subject test is highly recommended. Please note that although the subject test is not required, the absence of a subject score makes determining the quality of their application more challenging.
For the ScM program, both GRE general and subject tests are recommended, not required.
GRE and English proficiency scores do not automatically find their way to an application. Be assured, all applications submitted receive full consideration regardless of the status of the application.

Physics and Astronomy
Late Applications may be considered until April 1 but candidates that miss the deadline place themselves in a less competitive position.
GPA requirement.The university required minimum GPA is 3.0 or the equivalent.
GRE requirement.The GRE general test is required. The university will not accept GRE's older than 2 years. Official GRE general report is also required. There is no minimum score on the GRE required for admission.
GRE subject test in physics is NOT required.
TOEFL requirement. The TOEFL is required from international students whose native language is not English. The university will not accept TOEFL or IELTS older than 2 years. Official TOEFL test scores are also required. Foreign applicants must have the testing service send the TOEFL scores electronically or original documents to Rice University. Minimum required scores are 90 iBT, 250 CBT, or 600 on the paper based.
Letters of recommendation.Three letters of recommendation are required.
Application fee.The application fee is $85.00.
Any waiver request will have no bearing on the application assessment.

Applied Physics—MS, PhD
Well-prepared students will need a minimum of 12 months to complete their MS degree requirements while PhD students typically spend five years.
Study of the photochemical processes governing the composition of the troposphere and stratosphere, with application to air pollution and climate change.
Application of chemistry, conservation principles, and mathematics to the analysis of chemical processes occurring in natural and engineered environments.
Overview of air quality regulation in the the students.S. and world, including basic concepts of atmospheric chemistry and transport; fugitive, point, and area emissions; principles and tradeoffs of operation and design of air pollution control systems; and application of air quality models.
Emphasis will be placed on application of advanced techniques.
Simulation tools for modeling a broad range of optical components are designed to enhance the learning process.
TOEFL: Recommended Score of 88 iBT
Due to recent changes within the university University, Michigan Tech requires a minimum 79 overall TOEFL or 6.5 overall IELTS score.
