College description: Special Graduate Topic in Political Science: Political Behavior.This graduate seminar provides an examination of mass and elite political behavior in the United States, with an emphasis on political participation, political inequality, elections, voting behavior, and political organizations.
All applicants interested in a PhD in Political Science should apply directly to the PhD program whether or not they have a master's degree. Many of the university PhD students do not have prior master's degrees.The Admissions Committee will not review applications received without a fee.The general GRE is required. The university recommend the GRE be taken as soon as possible to allow time for the scores to reach us.All applicants whose first language is not English are required to take the TOEFL, including students who have received degrees from English speaking institutions. In a limited number of cases a TOEFL waiver may be granted. Applicants must apply separately for a TOEFL waiver.There is no minimum score for the GRE, but admission is very competitive and low GRE scores may weaken an application. The minimum score for the TOEFL is 600 paper based/100 internet based. The minimum score for IELTS is 7. If an applicant has not met the TOEFL/IELTS requirement the application will not be reviewed.An application is not considered complete unless the university receive official ETS scores. The Admissions Committee may choose not to review incomplete applications.Although the Massachusetts Institute of Technology does not have a minimum GPA requirement the applicant pool is academically strong and very competitive.Please submit two other documents, both in .pdf format: a copy of their resume and a writing sample.Applications are not reviewed until after the December 15th deadline.The only applications which are reviewed separately are masters and PhD.The admissions committee weighs all parts of the application in an effort to get as complete a picture of the applicant as possible.Due to the large volume of qualified applicants to the Political Science graduate program and the small number of students accepted into the program the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is unable to give specifics as to why an application was denied.

The university receive over 175 applications per year and can admit less than 15% of applicants. Each year, about 10 students matriculate into the program.Admission to the graduate programs is through online application. Recent GRE scores, for the verbal, mathematical, and written portions of the exam 3. Three letters of recommendation from people who are familiar with the applicant's academic record 3. A statement of purpose indicating the student's interests and career goals 4. The Graduate Committee reviews several aspects of an applicant's file: the personal statement, academic record, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and writing sample. Successful applicants must be able to use the personal statement to articulate clearly their interest in pursuing a doctorate in political science. There is no minimum score for the GRE, but the average quantitative GRE score of admitted applicants was 700 and the average verbal GRE score for admitted applicants was 600.
