College description: The Ph.D. program is intended to prepare students for a variety of careers in research, teaching and advanced professional practice in the broad sense of structural engineering, encompassing civil and aerospace structures, earthquake and geotechnical engineering, composites, and engineering mechanics. Depending on the student background and ability, research is initiated as soon as possible. The department also offers a seminar course each quarter dealing with current research topics in Earthquake Engineering (SE 290). Students must take SE 290 every quarter in the first year of graduate study, and it is strongly recommended to take it for at least one quarter in every subsequent year.

Admission to the UCSD graduate division requires at least a B.S. degree in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics with an overall minimum grade point average of 3.00. The general GRE test is required; subject GRE test is not required.

Applicants pay the application fee under the section title “begin submit process” and it must be paid using a major credit card: MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, or JCB Card.

Applicants who are applying for the Structural Engineering Department should take the GRE exam no later than December to insure the timely receipt of score results.
