The Biological Sciences offers a highly interactive master program. Students move easily among disciplines within the department and interact with other programs and institutions. Graduate research is generally in one of two areas: cell and molecular biology and systematics, evolution, and ecology.

A strong background in cell and molecular biology is essential for many competitive careers. Graduate students in this area conduct research on both well-studied model systems and non-model organisms, and often use comparative approaches.

To complement their classroom education, students can get involved in ongoing field research at both terrestrial and aquatic field sites around the world. Recent graduate students have studied termites and wood decomposition in Australian rainforests, collected ants in Brazilian savannas, discovered new reptiles and amphibians in Sri Lanka, and unearthed rare dinosaur fossils in the Gobi Desert of China.

The department regularly supports graduate student attendance at graduate short courses offered around the US and abroad, including those available through our membership in the Organization for Tropical Studies as well as regularly offered short courses at Friday Harbor, Southwestern Research Station, and Woods Hole.

A non-thesis option may available, but only under special circumstance and only to continuing students with departmental approval.

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript. Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.

500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study in your chosen field. Include your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans. Also discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional, and community activities, and any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned on the application. If you are applying for an assistantship or fellowship, you should also describe any teaching experience you have had.

You should mention these individuals in your statement of purpose, explain how your interests match their research program(s).

The general requirements stated under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate Programs.

The following requirements must be fulfilled: 30 credits total, including one 3-credit required course, 6 credits in thesis, and 21 credits in elective courses. In addition, a research thesis must be completed and successfully defended.

Each student follows a personalized program of studies, which maps out the courses to be taken throughout the degree.

A non-thesis option may be available, but only under special circumstances and only to continuing students. Departmental approval is required.

Complete a graduate degree while preparing for professional school.

The MEDPREP program has several master degree options available for students. The graduate program options available are:.

Master of Biological Sciences (MBS): Students in the MBS option take MEDPREP professional school preparatory coursework, and also complete graduate courses in physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and biology. This is an attractive option for students interested in taking a deeper dive into biology subject matter and earning a graduate degree while in MEDPREP. The MBS requires 30+ graduate credits in addition to MEDPREP pre-professional courses.

Master of Science Education in Curriculum and Instruction (MCI): MCI students complete a 12-course, 36 graduate credit program focusing on educational approaches and instructional methodologies. It features 7 required core courses and a 5-course elective sequence emphassing medical education. The required course sequence is offered online, providing attractive scheduling flexibility for MEDPREP students. This is an attractive option for students interested in a career in academic medicine.

Earn a graduate degree as part of the MEDPREP experience.

Qualify to apply for tuition waivers through the graduate school (TW not guaranteed).

Graduate standing may make it easier to obtain loans to finance your education.

Higher courseloads and intense graduate work may distract from primary goal of obtaining professional school admission.

Some of our recent graduates discuss the MBS option:.

I decided to enter this program because it allowed me to increase my research experience, as well as study the biological principles that I love. Of course, you want to take some classes that will aid in preparing you for the MCAT, but there is also some volition involved. Further a lot of the classes you take will either help you on the MCAT or the in medical school.

Ki I really wanted to improve my science GPA and have challenging molecular biology courses.

The Biological Sciences of Wagner College offers a program of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Microbiology.

Housed in a multi-million-dollar science complex, the Biological Sciences includes the Electron Microscopy Center, microtomy laboratory, darkroom, tissue culture facilities, laboratories, seminar rooms, lecture halls, and ample space for individual and group research efforts. An ultracentrifuge, research gas chromatograph, and similar complex instrumentation help comprise a modern training and research facility.

The mission of the graduate program in microbiology at Wagner College is to prepare students for careers as microbiologists, molecular biologists, immunologists, virologists, mycologists, parasitologists, and epidemiologists in clinical, industrial, governmental or academic research laboratories. This is accomplished by providing a strong grounding and hands-on experience in the biochemical and physiological principles that govern all aspects of microbial life and by offering a variety of opportunities that stimulate intellectual curiosity, as well as analytical and deductive reasoning skills in our students.

By graduation, students with a M.S. degree in microbiology should possess or have demonstrated.

Applicants for admission as matriculated students for the degree of Master of Science in microbiology must have:.

There are two plans of study in the program, one of which is selected at the time of application.

Thesis program in which the student engages in research and completes a thesis on the study as a part of the program.

Non-thesis program requiring additional course work and acceptable performance on a comprehensive examination at the completion of the program.

Microbiology 525, 611, and 626 are to be included in the course work for the Master of Science degree. Microbiology 512 is required of all students who have not successfully completed a previous course in an applied area of microbiology.

Requirements for an MS in Microbiology Thesis Track Checklist.

A minimum of 34 graduate credits is required, which includes six credits of thesis research.

Once the proposal has been approved, the candidate may register for MI 798 (zero credits). This course culminates with a research progress report that must be presented in writing to and approved by the thesis committee and program coordinator. The candidate then registers for MI 799 (four credits), the goal of which is to prepare and defend a written thesis based on their research.

A final oral examination covering the thesis and related areas is required and is generally held at least four weeks before the end of the semester during which the degree is conferred.

Requirements for an MS in Microbiology Non-Thesis Track Checklist.

Credit Requirements A minimum of 34 graduate credits acceptable to the department is required.

Our MS program provides a foundation in biological research for students who have not had previous research experience.

Course-based training focused on your needs: Flexible degree program allows you to choose courses that provide you with the background knowledge in your area of interest.

Option to transfer to PhD: MS students who excel can transfer seamlessly to the PhD track in Biological Sciences.

Opportunities for funding: MS candidates are eligible for teaching assistantships that provide a stipend.

Courses As a foundation for the research experience, MS candidates complete 18 credit hours of coursework. Courses cover advanced topics in the biological sciences and teach critical thinking, analysis of primary scientific literature, and experimental design.

Seminars To develop oral presentation skills, MS candidates enroll in a seminar course each semester of their first two years. Each student presents one seminar. MS candidates also attend the departmental seminar series, featuring distinguished scientists from inside and outside the university.

Rotations In the first year, MS candidates perform two or three 10-week research rotations prior to joining a laboratory and embarking on a research project. Rotations consist of small research projects that are designed to introduce the student to research opportunities available in that laboratory.

A written report describing this project is submitted at the end of the program.
