The thesis M.S. option is identical to that of the traditional M.S. in biological science with a thesis.

Of the 15 hours of required research thesis courses, 6 hours will be taken the summer after the senior year.

The non-thesis M.S. option is identical to that of traditional non-thesis M.S. in biological science.

These 3 hours will count toward both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in biological science.

The Biological Sciences offers a highly interactive master program. Students move easily among disciplines within the department and interact with other programs and institutions. Graduate research is generally in one of two areas: cell and molecular biology and systematics, evolution, and ecology.

A strong background in cell and molecular biology is essential for many competitive careers. Graduate students in this area conduct research on both well-studied model systems and non-model organisms, and often use comparative approaches.

To complement their classroom education, students can get involved in ongoing field research at both terrestrial and aquatic field sites around the world. Recent graduate students have studied termites and wood decomposition in Australian rainforests, collected ants in Brazilian savannas, discovered new reptiles and amphibians in Sri Lanka, and unearthed rare dinosaur fossils in the Gobi Desert of China.

The department regularly supports graduate student attendance at graduate short courses offered around the US and abroad, including those available through our membership in the Organization for Tropical Studies as well as regularly offered short courses at Friday Harbor, Southwestern Research Station, and Woods Hole.

This is an attractive option for students interested in taking a deeper dive into biology subject matter and earning a graduate degree while in MEDPREP. The MBS requires 30+ graduate credits in addition to MEDPREP pre-professional courses.

Master of Science Education in Curriculum and Instruction (MCI): MCI students complete a 12-course, 36 graduate credit program focusing on educational approaches and instructional methodologies. It features 7 required core courses and a 5-course elective sequence emphassing medical education. The required course sequence is offered online, providing attractive scheduling flexibility for MEDPREP students. This is an attractive option for students interested in a career in academic medicine.

For the 6 credits of BISC 6999 Research for M.S. in Biological Sciences to apply towards the M.S. degree, students must earn all passing grades in BISC 6999 Research for M.S. in Biological Sciences, submit a thesis document that is approved by the thesis committee, and successfully defend their thesis (passing grade in BISC 0900 M.S. Thesis Defense). Students who do not receive approval of their thesis document or fail their thesis defense must retake 6 credits of electives.

Any course with the subject code BISC, numbered 5000-8998 (not otherwise applied to other requirements) may fulfill this requirement.

For students in the Ecology Systematics concentration, BISC 7501 Population Community Biology and BISC 7503 Community and Ecosystem Ecology are considered concentration-specific core course subject to testing in the comprehensive exam. For students in the Cell Molecular concentration, these courses are considered breadth core courses, and are not subject to testing in the comprehensive exam.

For students in the Cell Molecular concentration, BISC 7502 Eukaryotic Molecular Biology and BISC 6734 Cell Biology of Eukaryotes are considered concentration-specific core course subject to testing in the comprehensive exam. For students in the Ecology Systematics concentration, these courses are considered breadth core courses, and are not subject to testing in the comprehensive exam.

A minimum of 34 (Ecology Systematics concentration) and 35 (Cell Molecular concentration) course credits including at least 2 credits of research tutorial. For the M.S. degree with thesis, credits must include a minimum of 6 M.S. research credits, submission of a thesis document approved by the thesis committee, and an oral defense of the thesis is also required. All research tutorial credits and M.S. tutorial credits earned during years 1 and 2 count as course credits. It is not unusual for students to take than 35 credits to complete their degree.

Reading knowledge of a foreign language (a computer language or statistics may be substituted for a foreign language).

The Graduate Committee of the Biology reviews applications for admission each year.

When making decisions for admission, the Graduate Committee takes all components of the application materials into consideration. The GRE is not required for the MS or PhD in biological sciences. There are also no strict minimum requirements for the TOEFL. All those interested in the biology graduate program at Drexel University are encouraged to submit an application.

The Biology understands the time and money required to pursue a graduate degree.

Teaching and research fellowships are available to fund stipends for PhD students. Typically, PhD students are supported for their first two years on a teaching fellowship (TF), and depending on funding in their particular lab, move onto a research fellowship (RF) during the final years of their program. Masters students are not eligible for TFs at Drexel University.

Teaching assistantships (TFs) are departmentally funded assistantships for PhD students and cover a yearly stipend, full tuition, and health benefits. The purpose of TFs is to support the teaching mission of the department. Assistantships shall be awarded primarily on the basis of academic ability and performance. Appointment to teaching assistantships shall also require the ability to teach effectively. The application review process begins December 1st and is generally completed by April 1st.

The Biological Sciences of Wagner College offers a program of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Microbiology.

Housed in a multi-million-dollar science complex, the Biological Sciences includes the Electron Microscopy Center, microtomy laboratory, darkroom, tissue culture facilities, laboratories, seminar rooms, lecture halls, and ample space for individual and group research efforts. There are two plans of study in the program, one of which is selected at the time of application.

Thesis program in which the student engages in research and completes a thesis on the study as a part of the program.

Microbiology 525, 611, and 626 are to be included in the course work for the Master of Science degree. Microbiology 512 is required of all students who have not successfully completed a previous course in an applied area of microbiology.

Requirements for an MS in Microbiology Thesis Track Checklist.

A minimum of 34 graduate credits is required, which includes six credits of thesis research.

Once the proposal has been approved, the candidate may register for MI 798 (zero credits). This course culminates with a research progress report that must be presented in writing to and approved by the thesis committee and program coordinator. The candidate then registers for MI 799 (four credits), the goal of which is to prepare and defend a written thesis based on their research.

A final oral examination covering the thesis and related areas is required and is generally held at least four weeks before the end of the semester during which the degree is conferred.

Requirements for an MS in Microbiology Non-Thesis Track Checklist.

Credit Requirements A minimum of 34 graduate credits acceptable to the department is required.

Our MS program provides a foundation in biological research for students who have not had previous research experience.

Course-based training focused on your needs: Flexible degree program allows you to choose courses that provide you with the background knowledge in your area of interest.

Option to transfer to PhD: MS students who excel can transfer seamlessly to the PhD track in Biological Sciences.

Opportunities for funding: MS candidates are eligible for teaching assistantships that provide a stipend.

Courses As a foundation for the research experience, MS candidates complete 18 credit hours of coursework. Courses cover advanced topics in the biological sciences and teach critical thinking, analysis of primary scientific literature, and experimental design.

Seminars To develop oral presentation skills, MS candidates enroll in a seminar course each semester of their first two years. Each student presents one seminar. MS candidates also attend the departmental seminar series, featuring distinguished scientists from inside and outside the university.

Rotations In the first year, MS candidates perform two or three 10-week research rotations prior to joining a laboratory and embarking on a research project. Rotations consist of small research projects that are designed to introduce the student to research opportunities available in that laboratory.

A written report describing this project is submitted at the end of the program.
