Dietetics this is a NEW OPTION FOR DIETETIC INTERNSHIP STUDENTS! (Master of Science in Nutrition PLUS Dietetic Internship).

Applicants interested in the MSDI program option have a different application process. This program option offers students the choice between a thesis or a professional project as a culminating experience.

Some of the 400 level DPD courses may be able to count as electives in the MS nutrition, the number of DPD courses left to complete depends on what the applicant has already taken. If the applicant has completed all of the sciences, survey of economics, general psychology, pre-calculus algebra and a basic nutrition course, that leaves 16 classes, most are 4 quarter units each, to take in addition to the MS curriculum. The handbook attached includes a DPD course list for your information. The DPD requirements total approximately 115 quarter units at Cal Poly however many of the lower division science and other courses can be found at other universities and community colleges.

Students enrolled in a dietetic internship that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics may receive 4 credits towards their 32-credit total. A signed Verification Statement from the dietetic internship must be submitted as proof of completion before credits are awarded, and students must complete all of the remaining 28 credits for the degree at WSU.

Texas Woman Nutrition and Food Sciences offers the only School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) Internship program in the state. The program is also one of only three approved by theSchool Nutrition Association nationwide.

The M.S. degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition is a 30 credit hour program designed to prepare students to work in areas of human nutrition and food science. Students may opt to focus their coursework on food science, human nutrition, or a combination of both. The program offers a thesis and non-thesis option, with the non-thesis option having the additional flexibility of being completed on-campus or online.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, however, for those who wish to be considered for a teaching assistantship, it is encouraged that you application and all accompanying materials by January 31. Online students are not eligible for assistantships or fellowships. Non-thesis students are not required to submit GRE scores.

Applicants to the online MS program should have had one year of college-level chemistry, one year of college-level biology (with one semester being Anatomy Physiology), and an entry-level nutrition course.

The M.S. program in nutrition and food science prepares students to pursue a wide variety of health-related careers through rigorous coursework. We provide a foundation of essential scientific methods, technical knowledge, practical skills and critical thinking.

Students choose to specialize in either food science or nutrition science. A dietetic internship may be available to those who have completed a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) before enrolling in our graduate program.

Nutrition science specializes in laboratory research on nutrition.

Food science explores the nature of foods, food safety, and food processing.

A GRE score will be required for students applying to the doctoral program via bypass.

For students who wish to receive registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) credentials, the department offers a dietetic internship (DI). The internship is built into the M.S. curriculum and allows students to complete the program concurrently.

Food Science admits in the fall and spring semesters only. All application materials must be received by the deadline posted and only complete applications will be reviewed.

Additionally, admission to the graduate program is term specific. If you decide to apply for a different semester or major, you will need to start a new application. If you are unable to attend the semester for which you were admitted, you will need to reapply for a future term.

The same scale applies for graduate-level work.

The GRE general test requirement is waived for MS applicants to our college programs through the fall 2026 admission cycle. Please note that it can take up to ten (10) days after sitting for the GRE for an official score report to be sent to the university.

International students: Applicants must submit an official English Proficiency Score Report. A TOEFL iBT® score of at least 80 (iBT) or 550 (paper-delivered) or an IELTSTM Academic score of at least 6.5 is required. Our department does not accept other English proficiency examinations.

Attainment of these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. The department reserves the right to increase standards if warranted by enrollment limitations and by the number and quality of applicants. Financial aid is a separate process from the admission to a graduate program.

In order to be successful in the major, background knowledge in related sciences should be obtained. If electing to take these courses while in the graduate program (leveling courses), it may take additional time to complete the other degree requirements due to sequencing of classes.

We encourage you to submit and complete your application early. The graduate admissions committee reviews completed applications throughout the open application period, which allows you to quickly receive an admissions decision.
